In an effort to provide a compromise between people wanting the ability to talk Off-Topic in our Talk About forums and the people who're just wishing OT posts would die, I have found a way to remove the display of the Talk About Forum posts in the "Latest Posts" display on the main page.
THIS IS NOT PERMANENT, THIS IS ONLY A TEST TO SEE HOW Amiga.org REACTS TO THE CHANGE.
If you want to make an off topic post, please do so directly in the Talk About forum which can be accessed at http://www.amiga.org/forums (http://www.amiga.org/forums)
Please post your thoughts or comments to this change here.

I have a feeling this will be the best thing to do.
Hope you're happy with the results.
I know I will be. :-D

Great idea - when I was looking around before I registered, there happened to be a load of forum topics which were off-topic - I nearly didn't join as it made me think that this site didn't actually do much real Amiga stuff :-)
-
Even for alx comment alone it's a good idea to keep it of the front page so it's not dominating as such.
Just noticed that all custom avatars our not showing as i post this, i take it thats it's just temp while your doing the changes Wayne

Whilst it might boost the on topic conversations
I fear that it will actually contribute to the decline
of the "beer hall" conversation club that is Talk About.
Might be worth Wayne monitoring the forum hit stats to see what the impact is.
PS: I hope no one takes the above the wrong way, I think it is beneficial for the site in general because it looks far more pro. I in no way wished to indicate that Wayne was making an error of judgement.

I for one think this might be a good idea. We'll see how it turns out though.

Looks good for me.. As long as those war/hate etc.. discussions keep on where they belong.

I feel that amiga.org is the of the 'Mall' for all Amigians to hangout.
It is our community hall for us to touch base & chat.
In saying that there are many other forums offering topics of choice.
But under the current extreamlly low Amiga related news to discuss.
It would be a shame to do anthing that would disperse the community further.
Right now we need to remain in contact with each other & it gets hard to stay on Amiga related topics.
With the AmigaOne & OS4 coming to fruition we may well have new & exciting hardware & software to discuss.
Untill then please don't risk fragmenting the endangerd spiecies of A.org users.

Ahh, nice. I must admit I like it...

Baaad idea!
The off topics are what keeps this site going, IMO.
Moving them off the front page will make it harder to reach them and therefore less people will bother reading them.
Once there are more on-topic things to talk about (ie. people getting their Pegs and AOnes (with OS4)) I'm convinced that the conversation will turn in that direction.
And BTW., what about all the on-topic threads that still belong in the Talk about section?
I have never had any trouble getting answers for an on-topic question, and I don't see what all the fuss is about.

When in doubt - format!
I know people who our exactly like this, and yes on windows of course, never Amiga ;-)
When the Ami OS is on, it's there to stay :-)
-
10 posts per page in flat mode? can't we have the old 20? or so back

It is a slightly modified statement from an actual person at some unofficial Windoze support forum.
He sounded quite serious about it too :-D

@wayne,
Thats cool, as long as its not gone I don`t mind. :-)

Ok, so now, it's a poll (http://amiga.org/modules/xoopspoll/index.php) Knock yourselves out.
-
I'm okay with it but as a tradeoff, make a direct link to talkabout in the top menubar.

About forums and the people who're just wishing OT posts would die
The solution I thing is simple. There could be an option in our profile to settle this down.
The freedom of choice is a great thing.
So as in "My big fat greek wedding" says "So there you go.." ahahah (it was very funny that movie :-D :-D, We are not like that! maybe 60 years ago and maybe in some villages I dunno :-))
The only problem that maybe there could be is I think that there would be some people that would want that noone or everybody else should see the OT messages. (because it gives a bad image of the site or because that way Amiga.org remains alive and doesnt fall in silence.)
I for one I`m pro in displaying the OT forums.

That message says it all I thing.

Probably a good idea, although the ideal solution would be to have it configurable so each user has his own preference. I'm sure that sort of thing will be introduced in future incarnations of Amiga.org, right Wayne? ;-)
edit: Just for the record, I find some of the OT threads the most interesting threads. Possibly because there's just little going on in the Amiga realm (aside from pointless arguments) so might as well argue about things that do matter, like world politics! ;-)

Whaddayaknow? I've only just noticed this. I obviously don't pay enough attention.
Oh, I'm fine with it, as long as we still get to talk OT.
Ta,
