Ok...time for a new thread. Now that i got most of the parts to build my own A1G4XE, then i think i could bring them up here. Ok, here we go:
800Mhz AmigaOne G4-XE mobo (on the way..)
1GB SDRAM DIMMs (2 parts Apacer 133Mhz Buf. Reg. ECC-type)
Black Chieftech Dragon MIDI-Tower w/360W PSU + 4 Cooler-fans..
Logitech Cordless Desktop Comfort/Optical MouseMan
Black internal 1.44HD Floppy
Black internal Samsung 16x/48x DVD-ROM EIDE/ATAPI (On the way..)
Black internal Samsung 40x/12x/40x CDRW EIDE/ATAPI
Sapphire ATI Radeon 9100 128MB DDR AGP (on the way..)
TerraTec 512i Digital PCI-soundcard (on the way)
I have the SoundBlaster Live Digital 5.1, but i will rather use the TerraTec for music-creation, and soon to order two large Western Digital Harddrives at 120GB each...!!!
:-) :-) :-) :-) :-D :-D :-D :-D :-) :-) 8-) 8-) 8-) :-o ;-)
-
Not bad.. I like that Chiftec dragon series a lot. I'm having my current PC (1800+ athlon) on black one. So I need to select another color if/when I purchase something new.
I hope those Apacer's do indeed work. These Articia based mobos are affully sensitive to memories.
One thing missing from your list.. 20" (true visible ares) LCD with 1600*1200 Resolution, inputs fow DVI, AnalogVGA, Svhs and normal Video .. And it's with black frames too :-D :-D :-D

Sounds noisey...i look forward to having a quiet next gen Amiga

Our you sure you will have enough space? ;-)
1GB SDRAM DIMMs (2 parts Apacer 133Mhz Buf. Reg. ECC-type)
Sure hope that mem works ok for ya.
Will the A1G4XE be as troublesome memory wise as the SE?
Sounds like a really nice set-up Helgis75

Thank, buddy :-) I'll have it in my mind...Yes, must be careful about the memory-issue, but i know that Articia S supports server-type DIMMS (that would mean 133Mhz Buffered Registered ECC-type, which is the case with mine..)

I don't think it will be noisy with 4 cooler-fans. It just allows my system to cool down any possible heat...Not even becoming warm!!! :-) :-) :-) :-D :-D

Thats good in summer but come winter and your very cold, you could save a fortune on heating bills, i know my old 040 without a fan did just that ;-)
-
It WILL be noisy. But the benefit is that you will notice the quiet that much more when you switch it off.

Ok, so the only Cooler-fan i need to use, is the one on the CPU, right?
-
@Helgis
Yup, FAR too many fans than needed! Noisy noisy! ;-)
@Joanna
Yummy! I`d like to get my hands on that monitor...sadly I don`t think I`d be able to afford one! :-o
-
Maybe it may be noisy, but it may be better to prevent heating in the tower, and good cooling in the tower is the most important issue...Also be aware that harddrives can get warm, too...So..
I rather may have the best cooling-system than a hot tower.... :-D
-
This is getting confusing, so is the fan on the CPU the only necessary one? Please tell me..
-
That is the only one you *need* per se but it doesn't
hurt having extra ventilation esp if you put other
hot running boards in there ( gfx cards for example )
It is a shame that we are now so far removed from the quiet computer - like the Spectrum, Sam Coupe, Amiga500 etc.
Hard drive noise, fan noise and CPU fan noise are
all doing their bit to make the computer the noise generating monstrousity of our age.
-
I really have to be very careful about that, but in case, i do have all the 4 cooler-fans..
I will see what kind of cooler-fan there is on the CPU of the A1G4XE, if delivered with...It has to have an ideal cooler-fan on the CPU...
-
No, in general its mainly the CPU that generates the most heat, but GFX cards and HD`s under load can also generate a high quantity of heat.
4 fans is a little OTT for the A1 in my opinion, but its your comp so YOU have in it what you want, I`m sure if I open my window I`ll probably hear the whirr from here! ;-)

I'm sure the one on the CPU may be enough..I'll check this out carefully...
-
@Helgis75
I have my PC in my bedroom, the wife hates it when I leave it on doing something at night, hopefully I`ll be able to banish this PC to the living room instead and use the A1 in all its quiet(er) glory in its place.
:-D

I guess so..hehe..:-)

Mine will be simpler than that:
AmigaOne XE G4 800 -on its way
kingston registered 512Mb RAM from Eyetech-
512 more than enough for OS4.
ATI Radeon 8500 64Mb DDR DVI TVout - here now.
Both 60 & 40Gb 7200 RPM ATA100 Harddisks -here too.
LG 48x 12x 52x CDRW -already here.
Some kind of CD/DVD reader - Not yet here.
Since XE ones had audio headers,it will became later,
but maybe SB Live!Terratec 512i whathever works better.
nice small keyboard and optical mice, preferably wireless.

By how much can you overclock the G4(800 Mhz)?

then u should be able to hear my PC and i live in sweden :-P
i got 6 fans in it if u don't count the fan on the power-supply
:-D
-
iam going to put go faster stripes on
and hang fury dice on mine :-P :-P :-P :-P
yeah a real Flame boy :flame:

this is what i have ,
cheap case part painted with my own window mod used seconhand peice of perspex also fitted top blow hole with 2500rpm akasa 4 coloured fan and metal grill from pc world .
lg dvd drive
yamaha CDRF1 cd writer 44xwrite 20xrewrite this has mount rainer
hercules radeon 8500 le 128mb ddr agp
rounded akasa floppy and ide leads
soundblaster 5.1 soundcard
seagate 7200 rpm baracuda 80 gig drive
hard drive cooler with 2 fans at front
and keyboard and mouse is made by dexxa these are cordless and sold at tesco although these might change. i like the look of an apple mac keyboard ive seen at wwe.theoverclockingstore.co.uk
i think that it for now althogh i might get a silent power supply.
just need to buy 512mb of memory from eyetech.

That not a bad setup of an A1G4XE! Impressive :-)

The Tower I have already purchased ready for my A1 has FIVE fans in it !!
Two full size fans are on the Hard drive bays two on the rear & one on the front.. Oh
And one on the clear side window..
Oops.. Thats six !!
Agreed about the noise.. My current set up ( EZtower) sounds like an airport.. So I think i'll just disconnect three of them.
coo ... The gits have made another trendy tower ....

If you only could balance the use of extraordinary fans..Then it still could run quiet..Say, having two for two harddrive and perhaps one for the graphic board could be enough, as oppose to the fan on the CPU of course..:-)
Nice tower, indeed.. :-)

@The_Editor
some very nice cases those they make a change from beige or aluminum, my cheap case will have to do for now it looks a bit in your face mostly painted red. One day ill put pictures up on yahoo website at the moment im still creating a faceplate with bright power on and hard drive light with a speed display from a 486 turned up side down and tweaked to display 801.need windows reinstall to get yahoo site building stuff tto work.

Sounds really promising...Good thing that the A1XE-mobo will be out quite soon...We are soon into the February month... :-)

come on!!
i'm pretty sure the g3/g4 consumes about 5-25 watts, while the pentium3/4 as duron/athlon/XP around 50-80 watts! The 63@600 doesn't even require a heatsink!!!
The radeon 8500 doesn't get as hot as the Geforce TI 4200-4800 models. Using a slightly bigger heatsink would require a very little/slow fan.
The nortbridge from VIA does not need cooling, and wont get very hot at all.
OK, hd:s can get very hot, but i've never had to use any form of cooling on my IBM 60GXP 7200rpm. But if you're going to use two hd:s, just don't squeeze them togheter. Separate them a bit.
The PSU actually does a great job in transferring the heat away from you computer, as it is placed in the top of the tower. Usually enough, and it's pretty quiet too.
Last note: i'm bying a PPC to get rid of all the fans/noise, not the opposite ;-)

That's ok for you but my Girlfriends thermostat appears to be broken and she is months from a service. Needless to say the Central heating is always on and I live in an oven.

YUCK! lian-li! aluminium!! ewww!!!!
gimme pressed steel! like my A4000T
i want real quality
and a full tower too!
and, like ive stated before, A FARADAY CAGE!!!! no damn perspex holes in the side!
ill be going for practicality over novelty, my case will be close to RS/6000 / SUN / HP style server quality
for the best relyability etc....
also the components will be the best i can find!
i already have a cheap crap case/ cheap HD / cheap monitor etc.. in my IBM-PC, and i hate it
so when i move on ill do it properly!
either do the job properly or not at all, i say!
i buy either the BEST or the CHEAPEST!!
-
Whats wrong with perspex holes anyway, some peeps (ME!) like to mod our cases a bit and make them a bit more individual, far better than plain jane vanilla beige! :-)
-

I recall my old box's VIA Northbridge has a heat sink installed (MSI built motherboard). Are you referring to the VIA south bridge?

There’s nothing wrong with brushed aluminium finish since it’s lighter than steel and it matches with my brushed finished stainless steel/titanium kitchen appliances.

I actually meant tha Articia northbridge chip, that doesn't need cooling. neither do the VIA southbridge....

iamaboringperson wrote:

Yup, a big bonking HOLE in the case kind of makes one of the points with having a case at all moot.
1. Keep stuff in place.
2. Block EM radiation.
Of course, if you've got a 2.4 GHz CPU, you could keep your cup of coffee warm by placing it in the microwave radiation emanating from that hole... ;)
According to my prejudiced view, it seems like most people who buy ruined cases (with windows) are teenage "casemodders" who spend their allowance on cold cathode lights and stuff like that. It's usually the ones who glue spoilers, stickers and fake extra exhaust pipes on their fuzzy-dice-laden little Korean cars... ;)
Personally, I use cheap no-name cases for all my home-built computers, except one, which needs to hold the weight of my feet when they're cold. :) The rest, hey, throw the computer stuff inside them and shove 'em under the table or something. OK, the A4000 still has its original sturdy but underdimensioned case and is prominently placed.

hey! i never thought of it like that! when will somebody design a case with a door in the side and a rotating tray! so i can put my pies in there and warm em up!!! :-D

heheheh.... well, thats exactly right! they think its all about appearance, and not build quality! i think looks are important to a certain degree, after all, your computer probably IS going to become a new peice of furniture in your house, so IMHO it shouldnt stick out like a saw thumb! it should be pleasant to look at
ps what happened to that old avatar? didnt like the old avatar, hmmm?

Heat sinks are just over clocking and 4X AGP. Most modern X86 BIOS gives you some over clocking abilities.
My old VIA chipset powered X86 motherboard can clock to 200 Mhz FSB (within the EV6 design specs).
Finding SDRAM modules (non-DDR) that support this speed would be near impossible.
Note MAI’s north bridge designs also supports X86 CPUs (they are almost equivalent to Intel BX440 chipset generation).
It would be nice if nVidia chipsets supports both PPC and X86, just like MAI’s designs.

Actually, I don't need no stinking microwave frequencies!
2 overclocked Athlons + 1 10 kRPM disk + 1 7.2 kRPM disk = hot coffee.
:)
(Yes, the fans are spinning, otherwise the coffee would be cold real soon and taste of burned AthlonMP. It's the camera flash.)

Hm, I thought Stinky (http://www.moomin.fi/englanti/haisuli_e.htm) would be more popular than the old Hieronymus Bosch monster (http://www.abcgallery.com/B/bosch/bosch71.html). :)
