Title: Yahoo! Mail Warning
Post by: Targhan on June 17, 2004, 07:39:41 PM
Yahoo! Mail! has recently made a massive upgrade to their system; however, the site is completely unusable by Amiga/MorphOS/Amithlon users.

IBrowse: Completely unusable.
AWeb: Crashes on certain functions
Voyager: Crashes immediately after login

If you want to see a change from this, please write webmaster@yahoo.com and let them _know_ that you use an alternative operating system and that by blacklisting YOU--they are losing audience for their sponsors!

I think that what needs to be done here is the exact opposite. You need to write to developers of the above-mentioned browsers that you'd like a more modern version, that supports today's standards.

Too bad some of the "standards" aren't really standards .... but I digress!  :-)

It's a tough call, but its probably a lot easier for Yahoo to sort out the problem.

I agree...While it's sad that they dont support the Amiga based browsers, They cant code for everything.

IMO, IBrowse, AWeb and Voyager, while good programs, have never really kept up with most modern web code.

yahoo is certainly used to hearing from Opera users about everything that's wrong!

but i don't think they will do much except roll their eyes.

IBrowse v2.3 works if you turn off javascript before going there. Just switch back to the older version when Yahoo complains.

But all of those browsers are crap they way to out of date as time goes on things advance why should yahoo stick to the 90,s for a few people that still use an amiga for browsing .I browsed the net on the amiga for two years before i built a pc and its been much easier since. :-?

Dear Mr Yahoo!,

I use a web browser that is only a few years old, but doesn't support any modern standards (when I say "modern" I mean 6+ years old).  Please go out of your way to not use any web standards that have been around for nearly a decade just to accomodate my browser's failure to comply with these standards (and ensuring that your site looks uncompetitive with your rivals on browsers that do comply with "modern" standards).

Thank you.

My website (hosted at Yahoo oddly enough) stats collect *everything* so when seemingly every Amiga user on the planet turned up to look at the Walker pages I found out what you all use:

80% + use some form of Windows
60% + use Internet Explorer.

There was a theory proposed that this was people looking from work but at the weekend the Windows numbers went *up* so thats the end of that theory.

So, given that most Amiga users don't even use Amiga browsers what's there to complain about?

If the Amiga browsers can't handle Yahoo I doubt Yahoo are going to care.
Perhaps it's time to introduce the Amiga Browsers to *this* century.

I too can't use Yahoo anymore but I don't think it's the fault of the
hard working Amiga web browser coders. It's such a simple problem
unrelated to javascript or anything. Yahoo have been noticing the
spoofed browser for a few months now... it's almost as if they are
spiting old browser users. Oh, and you PC users can shove off if your
browsers are so good - keep this subject for constructive remarks!

"Constructive" is a very subjective term.

One might consider getting with the times rather more constructive petitioning Yahoo!

Yeah this was totally uncool.
I was a btopenworld customer 'forced' to use yahoo webmail.
I just changed to tiscali broadband and have no problems.
And it's £5 cheaper for uncapped 512k.

Check it out in the U.K.

Greetings,
*Aweb - fails to log-in.
*Voyager & Ibrowse - Logs-in, never crashes, but no 'SEND' and 'ATTATCH FILE' buttons and other similar buttons.
Really bad, though I can only view my emails but can't reply them.
The only standard these browsers need are updated JAVA plug-ins just like firefox does. Most of the applets running are JAVA enabled. I can also access my Lotus-mail at the office but the same effect. The java running in these browsers are outdated, needs to be improved.
Any news on Jamiga??? I hope they got plug-ins ready for these 'old' browsers. These browsers need to conform to new web standards. I got a bad feeling it will never be updated, specially on '030 and less machines. :-( I hope I'm wrong...

That, and it is good to write Yahoo! too, but I would say it is on the writer to specify what feature or attribute of the Yahoo! Mail needs to be changed, or at least give one example. You can't expect the Yahoo! programmer to go out and buy a Pegasos to figure out what's up.

I am not trying to put this on Targhan though :) because he is one of the busier people in the community!

Here's a simple solution. Use the wap interface.

http://wap.oa.yahoo.com/

Although I just noticed they have an error on their Wap mail interface. It still says 6MB limit on mine but on the normal interface, it's 100MB. Someone probably hard coded the size text in the browser pages.

@Tekoneiric

Just one hitch. I can't attach a file from wap site.
Bummer! :-( Anyway, better than nothing. :-)

Just a thought:
Can YAM be configured to use as POP mailer for yahoo! or similar messengers to work on classic machines? I have not tried that yet.
Hmmm... I hope the answers are out there.. :-?  :-)
