Title: OS4 online via win98 pc?
Post by: Wilse on June 16, 2004, 07:55:13 PM
Hi folks,

Can anyone give me an idiots guide to using a win98 pc, with external
modem, as a gateway for my A1?

I have cat 5 cabling (not sure if it's crossover - how do you tell?)
and an Ethernet card has been installed in the PC.

I also have a DLink Ethernet hub.

Cheers people,

Set your PC's ethernet card's IP address as 192.168.2.1.

On OS4 it should be like this: Go to your A1, set the (Roadshow?) Amiga IP to 192.168.2.2, with gateway 192.268.2.1. Put Roadshow online.

That should be it. Report any problems and I'll try to tell you where you're going wrong, but remember I don't have Roadshow.

Ummm, does Win98 have internet connection sharing?  I thought it was just XP ... but then I've never tried to rig less than one phone line per computer :-?

I think it might do, but whether it works...

If Win98 connection sharing doesn't work at once, try
WinRoute. It's easy to install, fast and reliable.

Uhm, yeah, Win98 doesn't have gate software. Win98 SE does.

I'm fairly sure it's win98SE (I'll check when I go downstairs).

Where would I find the Internet Connection Sharing requester?

I wouldn't know, I only had 98... :-(

I remember now that I used my Amiga as the gate when I did this myself, not the PC, sorry for that. Connection sharing might be automatic on SE, just try setting it up with the IPs as I wrote below. If it doesn't work, Wingate is a very easy to set up option, and certainly more worthwhile than the reviled ICS.

@Kenny:

Where do I set IP address on the PC?

Cheers again,

Go to the control panel, select network. You should see two entries called "TCP/IP" - one for your network card, one for your modem. Click the entry for the network card, and it has a tab called IP Address. Go to "Specify an IP address" and enter it there. For the "subnet" box
use 255.255.255.0 if you are in doubt what to enter there.

@Kenny:

Cheers for the help.

On the A1, the subnet box only allows two characters before the first '.', i.e, instead of 265.265.2.2, I get to 26, then it won't let me type another number until I type '.'.

I have the connection A1 -> Ethernet hub -> uplink socket, ethernet hub port 1x -> PC Ethernet card.

Uhm....265? 255 is the max value (8 bits) in those fields I think.

Actually...

I havent got an A1 box yet, but I do have an XP box and have set up conenction sharing with 2 other Windoze boxes.

Linux has a windows compatible RDP client. (rdesktop / tsclient).  Is there something similar for the A1?

I'd love to consign my XP pro box to the back of my wardrobe and use my soon to be purchased A1 to do all.

@odin:

Whoops, silly me.

But that must mean Gateway 192.268.2.1 is wrong too, oder?

Uh, yeah. That should be 168 - damn typos. :-x

Actually that number doesn't really matter. 192.168.x.x is used for LANs generally because it doesn't clash with internet IPs.

192.168.2.1 - PC

192.168.2.2 - A1

That should be it. Sorry for typo. :-\

I really recommend a router, by the way; you can get all of your machines online at the same time, Peg, PC and A1, and transfer files between them all, with no need for gate software or having one machine on all the time.

PC seems OK (Wingate and ICS)

A1:
Prefs -> Internet -> Interfaces -> eth3com.device, unit/port = 0, use static IP 192.168.2.2, subnet mask 255.255.2.2 -> use -> save.

Internet -> New Connection -> Ethernet (DSL LAN) -> Manual config.
Device driver eth3com.device, port 0

connection name Robert, service name vispa, interface name PPPoE.

I still get 'connection failed - too many retries'.

@ Wilse

Check the cable.

Easy way to tell. Get both ends of the cable. On the ethernet RJ45 cable you will see it has little plastic spring clips on top. Turn both ends around so the clips face the bottom, hold them side by side, so the cable kinda looks like this.

{} {}
 | |
 | |
 |_|

Where :

{} is an RJ45 connector.

- = Cable.

(sorry for the bad ascii diagram)!

Ok, so now you can see the thin coloured wires in the bottom.

IF =

The colours are in the SAME order from left > right you have a PATCH cable (no good for Comp>Comp configuration)

IF =

The colours are in a different order, more than likely X-Over :-)

EG i have an X over cable here and the order of the wires is ;

RJ45 plug #1 =

green,white/orange,blue,orange,brown

RJ45 plug #2 =

orange/white,orange,blue,green,brown

Oh, and it says Xover on it :-)

Hope this helps!

Kev

@Wilse

If there is an option on your A1 to specify Gate IP, enter your PC IP address (192.168.2.1) there.

Is this a DSL modem or an actual modem?

Cabling should look like:
PC<-->Hub<-->Amiga

Cables should be non-crossover; some hubs can autosense and adjust, but as usual, it's good to reduce variables.  Some hubs also have a switchable or permanently crosswired "uplink port;" plug your non-crossed wires into normal ports only, please.

Easy way to tell a crossover cable:  Look at the connectors from the top (non-clip side).  A normal "straight through" cable will have the same color wires on pins 1 and 2 on both ends (first two pins on the left... they get paired up as a solid and stripe pair, so just look at the one that you can see color on).  A crossover cable will have different colors, because the pairs are crossed.

---

To actually use "Internet Connection Sharing," you need to  activate it somehow.  It's an optional component, so if you have 98SE and can't find it in the Start Menu (Control Panel submenu?), you need to add it as an option, I forget how the heck you do that but I think it's under Add New Software in the Control Panel or something, then Add/Remove Windows Components.

---

If this is a DSL modem, you're best off getting a generic router (Linksys, 2Wire, whatever's cheap at the drugstore this week) and not having to think.  If it's a regular modem and you don't want an excuse to get rid of dialup, yeah, you're a bit stuck, though if you want to throw money at the problem, a similar US$50 can get you one of these if you can find one:  Actiontec home router with 56k modem (http://www.actiontec.com/products/modems/dual_pcmodem/dpm_overview.html) ... which can make an entertaining geek toy, too. (http://slashdot.org/articles/03/09/01/0245257.shtml?tid=106&tid=137&tid=185)

---

Edit:  The discontinued 3Com 3C510 apparently is/was another cheap home router with a modem.  This article (http://groups.google.com/groups?q=3c510&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=MPG.19a301a6c4108323989703%40news.rcn.com&rnum=1) mentions similar SMC, Asante, and GVC products, which might be more readily available wherever you are.

---

Double-Edit:  The 3Com 3C888 is a bit overkill, but was available in Europe, and there's one going for 0.99 of your monetary units (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3692&item=5705198177&rd=1&ssPageName=WDVW) on eBay.co.uk.  Note that it is a standard router, should be no problem using it with Macs or Amigas despite the seller's confusion (http://groups.google.com/groups?q=dialup+modem+router+uk&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=56460b5658dac902e3fb60bdcaced0d8.110261%40mygate.mailgate.org&rnum=1).

Of course, if you get ICS working, that'll work too, but I can say that, if you can afford it, it's worth buying the hardware so you never have to waste your time on it.  Always a good idea to get your Windows-machine-securing firewall offloaded to less-exploitable hardware, too.

@Floid:

I have two patch cables.

Config is now:
PC -> Hub port 1 (I've just switched this from uplink)
Amiga -> Hub port 2.

It's a dial-up modem, although I've finally bitten the bullet and ordered broadband. Should have it in 'two more weeks'. ;-)

I'd still like to get this working in the meantime.

I've tried with both ICS and Wingate.
