Is anyone else here watching euro 2004?
I never thought I would open such a thread (considering Greece's previous euro records ;-) ), but here it is! We're having a hell of a time here in Greece, since the winning opening against Portugal!!
England vs France was also a great match, and I'm looking forward to tonight's Germany vs Holland.
-
5-0!!!
-
@whabang
You must be very happy. I saw the highlights last night. I bet you're happy that Henrik Larsson came out of retirement, heh heh. :-D
-
@MrZammler
@Whabang
Congrats on your teams victories. Hopefully England will qualify, despite our loss :-)
-
What's everyone's predictions for tonight anyway?
I think that Latvia could spring a shock on Czech Rep. by beating them 1-0. But I think Germany v Holland will be a 1-1 draw though. :-D

To be honest, I'm fed up with this Larsson-hysteria!
I've actually been asked, by fanatic Celtic-followers, to take a picture of his house and send it to the freaks mentioned above. :-D
-
Some good games so far, the opening Portugal vs Greece and the more recent Sweden game with Larsson doing one of the best headers i've ever seen,
Holland vs Germany being the next biggy, to be honest i think we "Ireland" have sorta pissed of Holland beating them in a recent friendly, sorry for the reminder Kees but you must know we aint that much of a walkover by now, ahmm,
Anyway i think this one may be close, guess it comes down to how well the Germans are playing on the night and if some of the good Dutch players like Ruud, Overmars, Kluivert are on form.
Doesnt seem to be much unity in either side in recent times so this one gonna be a hard call, just like the games already played.
Good luck to all.
-
Oh man, that goal from Ruud Van Nistelroi (hope I spelled that ok), was unbelievable!! Great game!
Now, I'm getting anxius for tonight's Greece vs Spain, as much as I dont want to, I see a 2-0 victory of Spain tonight...
I'm though curious of how Portugal will play...
-
@Sumner7:
Your tip came close :-o
Germany - Holland 1 - 1
Czech - Latvia 2 - 1 (Latvia was leading 1 - 0 for a long time)
-
And to reply to my own post, yeah GO GREECE!!!
Greece vs Spain 1-1!!! Portugal beat Russia 2-0, so now, everything will become clear on Sunday, it's Greece vs Russia and the big one, Spain vs Portugal.
GO GO GREECE!
-
Well Done Greece, you managed to squeak through to the next round!!! I was sure they were out after their humiliating defeat to the Russians, but to my surprise Spain lost without scoring a single goal and thus Greece edges ahead thanks to their Goals Scored stat. *phew*
Wish I could be in Greece right now, I can only imagine all the parties going on... Although if I were the Greek coach I'd have those guys locked up in a training room running drills - they can party later!!!

I am a celtic fan and I am not a freak! Henrik is a god to us!!!! :-D

I'm happy portugal have gone through and spain have gone out. But if portugal went out, they wouldn't have far to go home!
Anyway, ENGLAND v Croatia tonight, and i'm hoping for an england win. I want us to play greece, not portugal in the quarters, if we get there.
COME ON ENGLAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Me too, we would rather have England rather than France, but I cant see France loosing to Switzerland though (or even a tie).
Anyway, yesterday's match againt Russia was a close one, but we're there ;-)
-
I predict:
England 1 - 2 Croatia
Well, I'm being realistic!
-
Well, after tonight's result against Croatia, I feel like getting a train all the way to Scotland, finding KennyR and shouting "Eng-er-land! Eng-er-land! Eng-er-land!, Eng-er-land! Eng-er-land! Eng-er-ler-and!, Eng-er-land! Eng-er-land! Eng-er-land!, Eng-ger-ler-and! Eng-ger-land!" :-D :-D
Of course I am a person who is modest in victory and humble in defeat. But to annoy Kenny, it'd be worth it :-)
;-) @ Kenny
-
Well, you'll have to beat someone better until you can impress me. Beating Croatia was a foregone conclusion. ;-)
(Although England did do well tonight. England matches are always great to watch. Even if the commentator was being an arse again.)
Anyway, let's see if England can do well against a much stronger team in their next game - Portugal.
-
Hoya!
Has Qatar been beaten yet???
Be funky
M A D
-
I worry about this Rooney guy too. He's a great goalscorer but the media are putting him up on a pedestal. It's a long way to fall. If they want him to score goals for England and get them through these much harder stages, maybe they should try not putting so much pressure and expectation on their players? Also seeing an end the public relations execution to the players who DARE make a mistake that gets England put out or whatever would be nice.
-
MrZammler wrote:

Nah, I think Greece would have a better chance against France. Yes, France has one more point then England, but I think they fluked out against England when they scored two quick goals in extra time. Nah, England has the better team. At any rate, it's now settled, France vs Greece this Friday!!!
- Mike
-
I was hoping to play against England in the quarter-finals. Last time they played with us had to dive all time in order to get free kicks for Beckham. They equalized in the 93 minute after a non-existing foul :pissed: . I though it's time for revenge but it seems that we have to wait a bit further. Maybe we should kick out the French first...
-
Italy OUT!
@manicx
That what they all say! :-)
-
it seems that the Dutch football fans aren't really fond of a person called "Dick Advocaat" because he kicked out the best player at the match Czech-Netherlands (3-2)
The player is called "Robben" and is a Groninger.
Now they hardly can win anymore.
That's what happen when you kick out a Groninger :-P
-
Robben plays for chelsea now, Speel. :-D
-
Some nasty fans out there. At the Den vs Swe game some fans held a sign that read "2 + 2 = Nordic Victory; bye bye Italia". It was pretty quiet in our "little Italy" the other day. Btw, speaking of Italia, what's with the blue & white uniforms? Why are they wearing tradional Greek colours?!? :pissed: Well, now they can root for Greece! :-P
EDIT: Oh yeah, bye bye Germany! But you Germans can root for Greece too, we have a German coach you know!!! :-P
- Mike
-
@Speel
What about Patrick Kluivert, he was a class player. Didn't he get left out as well?
-
I'm looking forward to us playing Portugal tonight. Hopefully we'll knock the hosts out and get to the semi finals!
1-0 2-0 3-0 4-0 5! KEEP THIS COUNTRY'S DREAMS ALIVE!
COME ON ENGLAND!
-
Portugal-England, what a game!
A bit cheeky the portugese goalie too take the last penalty kick himself.
I think KennyR is happy now
-
this is the "football" thread, right???
i haven't read it. sorry, too busy.
a friend just sent me a wonderfully rude flash anim.
Orgasms from around the world (http://www.ratedtoons.com/flash/Interorgasm.swf)
this is not "work friendly". it's cartoon, so, no it's not porn. RELAX!
but it features several cultures around the world and i figured this would help "unite" everyone after this game is now over.
or, maybe not!
ps. there is no "american" represented, because, as we all know, americans don't have sex. they just talk about it alot.
-
Not happy, just relieved.

I also noticed there was no Greece. Perhaps that's for the best! ;-)

Yup, Portugal wins. Great game, and yes, Portugal deserved that victory.
Now lets see if Greece can follow Portugal's lead!
- Mike
-
Yeap Portugal did deserve to win, but I was cheering for England ;-) I was wathing it with a friend his mother is English, his father Greek... Anyway...
Let's see how Greece does tonight ;-) I'm just hoping it will be a good match, but I cant imagine us kicking France out ;-)
We'll see...

LOL!

Congrats to Greece, they are definately the most improved team of the year/tournament. My favourites would go to the Czechs, as they look sweet when attacking!
-
Yeap, it's gonna be a tough game againt the Czechs, but one thing our players have proved it that they wont give up on the game...
I have a gut feeling though, that we're gonna be ok after the match (maybe the penalties ;-) )
-
Czechs are the team to beat. If Greece takes it, Portugal has no chance. Actually, Portugal has no chance either way... To be honest, I think all Greeks are thrilled that their team made it as far as it did. I just hope they put forth their best efforts as they did with France. If we lose, we shall lose with dignity! GO GREECE GO!!!
- Mike
-
GREECE WINS!!!
I can't believe it!!! I watched the game at a sports hall with about 100 other Greeks. After the game we drove around with flags, honking etc... We drove through our Little Italy and then through the Portugese district. Heh, fun. None of us believed we'd beat the Czechs!! Great game!
GO GREECE GO!!!

I didn't think it could be done! :-) Greece have trulty excelled their own expectations by a long way. Who would have thought they would have made the final. This is going to be a really tight final me thinks, Portugal have the home advantage, but Greece will have a physiological adavantage with their earlier win over them. Great stuff. Have a pint on me Greece fans! You deserve it. :pint:

Yeah, Roots. I was born and raised here in Canada, but both my parents moved here from Greece less then a year before I was born. I have lots of relatives in Greece as well. I speak Greek, my dad makes the best Bougatsa and I love Retsina - that makes me pretty darned Greek! :-)
- Mike

Hey, where you on Canadian TV celebrating? There was someone with a shaven head... was it you? (my small claim to fame if it is) :-D

Hey, where you on Canadian TV celebrating? There was someone with a shaven head... was it you? (my small claim to fame if it is) :-D
hehehe... I'm guessing you're talking about what was going on in Toronto's Danforth street - Canada's "little Greece". I knew the celebrations there made the national news, good to see it hit the international news channels! :-) My uncle has Greek TV on sat and we were watching the festivities in Omonia Square (the heart of Athens, for those who don't know). Wow! You'd think every single Greek won the lottery that day! :-P
Hamos!!!
I just watched the goal agian. What timing! It's like 14:40 in the first overtime quarter, the corner is called, and I'm watching the players casually walk over to their positions. I'm watching the clock...
14:57
14:58
14:59 (corner kick)
15:00 (goal!!!)
GAME OVER!!!

EDIT: Btw, how were the celebrations in Melbourne? I was there about 6 years ago and know first hand that there's TONS of Greeks there. Musta been crazy there too!
-
The stuff that have been going on here, are unbelievable! I'm in Crete, where we had a huge feast yeasterday night... I'm still dizzy after all the beer last night, my God...
Spoke after the match with a couple of friends of mine who where there last night, they're gonna rock Porto!!!
Damn, wish I could be there...
Great day for Hellas.
-
Congratulations!!! I always hoped for meeting the greeks again! ;-)
-
hehe tsipouraki mou gluko!
There were around 4000 celebrating in Melbourne. A couple flares were lit. Unfortunately, the match started at 4:30am, so the amount of Greeks who could have gone in the middle of winter fell :-( Plus it was a Friday morning...
Sydney had a fair amount too.
-
@pixie
Us too... :-P
BTW If you hear the chant:

Just finished watching the French GP (what's this got to do with football I hear you ask ;-) ) and 2 or 3 times during the race one of the commentators announces that ITV (the channel showing F1 in the UK) will be showing the Euro 2004 football final live tonight.
He goes on to mention the two teams in the final...
"Portugal, who put England out, against Greece."
FFS! Who cares! England are out of a championship, yeah, we all know that! What they're not telling you is that this is the first time Greece has been in a major competition for 10 years!
Oh no, we can't mention that now can we? Nobody cares about Greece being 100-1 outsiders and getting to the final. If it wasn't for that bloody ref it would've been England in the final.....

Wow, I can not believe it!!! What a game! Honestly, I'm so happy it's over, the stress was getting to me!!! I was very impressed with Greece's play today. No one can say we fluked out, we beat three top ranking teams in a row, each with a score of 1-nil. In each game you could see the frustrations of the opponents as the game dragged on. It's an amazing strategy and it worked flawlessly. Otto Rehhagel is a genius!
After the game we had a long line of cars, complete with police escort, and paraded from the hall we watched the game down to our "little Italy", where the Italians were out on the street cheering our victory. In the streets there was singing and dancing, and yes, plates got smashed. :-P It was quite the experience.

Well, after the game I walked up to the Drive. We had some impromptu celebration. We didn't have any police escort but two cops on bikes showed up after a while and rode back and forth for a while.
I took a few pics and put them up here.

Fluffy, Nice pics! I'd imagine the festivites in West Broadway/Kitsilano area would be just as exciting.
Yeah, the same thing happened here. After the initial parade, lots of Portuguese came by and we celebrated together (although they didn't stay long). They even re-paraded down the street but this time with Porto cars as well.
On the satellite I saw celebrations in Lisbon, and for a second I thought it was Greece. There were so many Greek flags there it was unreal. I hear there were over 10,000 Greeks at the stadium itself, and probably just as many who never got tickets waiting outside. And I can only imagine that all of Greece is now buring from celebrations. Crazy!!!

I don't know, hard to say. Soccer means more to Greeks then it does to Canadians. I'd probably be happy with either win, but perhaps happier with a Greek win.
