Title: A1200 - Need hard drive help
Post by: Brandon on June 13, 2004, 01:05:21 AM
Hiya,
It's been about 10 years since I really used my amiga but lately I've been getting into the emulator.  Anyway, I pulled my A1200 out and got it setup.  It has a 120meg hard drive and the 3.0 Roms and no expansions/addons.  I took an old 2.3 Gig drive and wiped it out and used WinUAE/Workbench3.0/HDToolBox to create new partitions, (a 300 meg and two 1 gig) set the first partition to bootable and installed workbench 3.0 on the drive.  The A1200 won't recognize it.  If I use the boot menu on the A1200, it just shows the DF0 and CC0 options.  If I put the 120meg back in there, it sees it and will boot from it, so the IDE controller is still good.  The IDE cable is a 2.5" to 3.5" cable that came with the amiga. (The 120meg drive is a 3.5" drive)

The 2.3 Gig drive will boot under WinUAE.

I found a post on here about someone who used WinUAE to format and install the hard drive successfully so I'm pretty sure it's possible, I just don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Update:
I found an old 550 meg drive and set it up and it works fine.  I did manage to get the 2.3gig to show up on the A1200 using HDToolbox, so I partitioned it there.  But the partitions still won't show up on the WB screen for me to format them.  It also doesn't list DH0/DH1/etc on the boot menu (the 550 meg did even before I formatted it).

At this point I really don't care if I set the 2.3gig drive up using WinUAE or the A1200, as long as I can.  :-)

Hi, Im thinking maybe its the same problem i had with the disk not spinning up in time to be recognised.
It stumped me for quite a while.
They would appear in toolbox but then dissappear elsewhere.
Apparently 3.1 roms fix this but if no 3.1 roms are available then cutting pin 1 of the ribbon cable stops the hard disk being reset thus enabling it to be spinning in time for the next soft boot.

I didn't actually cut my pin 1, i undid the plastic connector and peeled pin one back so it wasnt connected. This way i can recconect pin 1 if i need to.

See ya.

Hum,
I`ll bet he forgot to check the `bootable` option...
