I was just on this website called "katodev.de" I noticed something interesting which was the High End requirements for an Amiga to play MP3's with the AMPlifier sofware:
HIGH END REQUIREMENTS:
"DSP-driven Hardware which supports mpeg.device (Peggy+, CD32-FMV, Melody-Z2, Melody1200-plus/pro)
Amiga using 68020 CPU or better running Amiga OS3.x "
Ok, I happen to have a CD32 with an FMV card..........................so Are you telling me that I can play MP3's perfectly throught the FMV card? if so, how? where do I get drivers and software?
I suspected this before but was told I can only play up to Layer 2 ?????

I don't think a FMV card contains a DSP (Digital Signal Processor)
besides, if it would contain it, you still should program your own mp3 decoder, since FMV cards are EXTREMELY rare. However, you CAN play MP3's with a SX32 card and the MAS player
-
If I am not mistaken, all VideoCD players can play some form of MP3 because it has MPEG1 Video decoder and I assume the audio contained it is has to me at least MP2? or MP3, so if it can decode video, I don't see why it cannot decode Audio.
As for the MASPLayer, I wish I could find one of those for cheap. and the software was made wrong........it is loRes PAL overscan.which means you cant use it on hardly any NTSC LCD screens if you want to make it portable, or even a regular TV for that matter.

@leirbag,
You don`t have to use Dirks software to use the MASPlayer.
You can use any MP3 player that supports the mhi.library(such as AmigaAmp), or Amplifier using the masmpg.device

I tried to get the FMV card working for MP3 playback, but I could never get Amplifier going on the system. It kept crashing with a Guru.
Assuming you can get Amplifier operational, go to the Config menu, the decoding tab, and set everything to hardware. Enter cd32mpeg.device, unit 0 in the now-unghosted box.
I don't know if other players can hit devices directly, so Amplifier may be the only option, as cd32mpeg.device is ROM-resident.

It also mentions the Peggy+, which plays MP2 only.
I think, from the wording, it just means that it supports mpeg.device. Although, you can never be sure based on just grammer given that English isn't first language to most of the world.
mpeg.device is an older system to support FMV hardware, which as a sideline also of course does MPEG audio. But due to age, with most hardware you're limited to the older standards as used in Video CD.
The CD32 FMV module, like my Peggy+, pre-dates MP3 by quite a bit.

decoding is not really the problem. the 16bit audio playback is the problem (Amiga without soundcard only supports 8bit audio playback).
Maybe it's included on the FMV card, but I do not know that, so you should check that.

nOw2 is right. The Peggy+ is more or less the Zorroversion of the FMV, as it uses the same mpeg.device and has the same C-Cube decoder chip. The Peggy+ can play back MP2 hardwareaccelerated and thats it.

you can play it without problems with the FMV, if you have SX-1 and hd you can install os 3.9, for example (sx32 is not compatible with this FMV card).
You can use amplifier with the hardware decode option and of course, play full VideoCDs or any program of mpg supporting hardware devices.
cheers

Amplifier can play VideoCD's?
how do you direct it to play from the CD32 FMV (I have an SX-1 with HD)?
SO can the FMV card play MP3 or not? some say YES, others say NO............which is it?
if yes...........How do I access the CD32mpeg.device? as it is not in the devs drawer?
I have a command called "cdmpeg" in the "C" directory that plays VideoCD's...........I guess that can access it...I got it from the Commodore Demo CD 2.0 for the CD32 which had 2 MPEG tracks..............but how will I use AMPlifier to do it since it has to be a DEVICE?
