Angelfire has started putting some kind of funky frame on the left side of the browser. How are they doing that, and how can I stop it from happening? I don't know if it happens on browsers other than IE. Example. (http://www.angelfire.com/film/ranisite/)

I used to be able to view amiga.org using the "open link in new window" method. For some reason, now, IE isn't remembering that I've logged into AO already and every new window I open has the login form on the left so I have to log in again to reply to anything. What setting should I set to make IE remember my logins? I reset IE to defaults, but that didn't solve the problem. I'm out of ideas. :-(
This doesn't happen only on AO. I'm just using AO as an example.

I just noticed that that funky frame persists when you "open link in new window" if you close the beframed window without first closing the frame, then "open..." a link from another page (even from non-funky-beframed windows).

hm, i'm not getting any "funky frame on the left side of the browser" using Opera.
i know that's not helpful, but I can't see using a browser that gives you that much aggrivation. :-D

Yeah... I can state the same thing about viewing the page in Firefox 0.8. No funky frames.
How many excuses does one need before disabling IE and using something else? :-)

Did you change the security level in your internet settings? That would explain why IE is blocking some cookies and causing you problems.

I changed to using an older computer I had, actually, so I went in and put the security on medium to see if maybe years ago I had put in some weird settings that caused the problem. Just now I tested the minimum level and it also didn't fix things.

For some odd and unknown reason, I was just now able to reply to PMails without having to log in on the reply window (as per the explanation in the first message of this thread). I was all ready to log in again but I didn't have to. I wonder if this change has anything to do with the recent, mysterious emptying of the "add/remove programs" list on this windows 98 (not SE) machine.
If anyone knows how I can restore that list of programs, let me know.

Why not try Smart Uninstaller (http://files.webattack.com/localdl834/sun.zip)?
It is a 372kb program that you can use instead of the standard Windows Add/Remove applet. It lists all installed applications, including hidden entries and allows you to either uninstall the application or to remove the entry alone.
In addition, it shows extended information about each entry, including installer information and more (if available) and also allows you to edit the information...

You may have picked up a browser hijacker.
Do you have:
IE 5.01 with 1 security patch
IE 5.5 SP" with 1 security patch
or IE 6.1b with 2 or 3 security patches?
Do you have all Windows updates installed? (that doesn't mean the latest IE etc, just the security updates), do you have a hardware firewall, anti-virus or Spybot 1.3 (with updates)?
All of this stuff is needed to keep nasties out these days, even if you don't open unknown email attachments or go to iffy sites ;-)
Spybot is the thing for removing browser hijackers BTW, it can be downloaded from http://safer-networking.org

Yeah, Spybot is the thing. I used to use AdAware, but for some reason they started programming it in Gecko or whatever Netscape 6 was written in because it's slow and clunky now. It takes 2 minutes just to bring up a window to select the drive to scan! :-(

I tried that program, but it doesn't list all the programs that went missing from the list. I need something that restores the list. Reinstalling windows is not an option.

I suspect the site is installing some kind of browser helper object.. the frame you are seeing on the left is probably the inline search frame. You should check to see if they have hijacked your search facility (you can do this by clicking on the magnifying glass).
You might also want to run ad-aware, it's free edition would suffice to probably remove anything there that they installed..

Running AdAware didn't stop that weird frame dealy on Angelfire. It's probably one of those stupid things that lets websites screw up your browser settings... like when all you navigation buttons and address bar disappear for good reason and sometimes the settings don't fix when you restart the browser. Is that just an IE thing? Ugh.

Thanks. It didn't work, though. I guess I waited too long to do it because the 5 default saved registry backups didn't restore the list. :-( Now I gotta manually find these stupid things if I want to remove them. Dumb stupid registry. :-(

OK, well, I'm back to having to login again to reply to PMails. It's all very mysterious and lame. Save me AOS4!
