Title: I just saw the weirdest thing
Post by: mikeymike on June 09, 2004, 10:23:31 PM
I tend to leave my bicycle out the front of the house in case I need it again during the day, and put it away in the evening.  This evening, I went to move it when I noticed something on the front tyre.

A baby blackbird.  I picked it up, it hopped out of my hand, and the mother came along to escort it away.

What a nice story :-)

Did the mother swoop at you and make loads of noise? They can get quite violent if they think their infants are in danger.

I tried saving a young blackbird from an evil cat but couldn't get close because the mother (or father) bird was attacking me. Sadness.

My story sucks. But that's life.

Yes, it's amazing how devoted birds are to their young. Fledgling blackbirds seem to be especially prone to getting lost and will squawk all day and into the night to attract their parents (who squawk back even louder).

I happened to find a youngster who'd ventured into my conservatory one evening. By the time I found it, it was dark, but that hadn't stopped the parent from its searching. I could hear its calls in the darkness.

I carried the little bugger into the garden and released in on the lawn. It squawked,  and the air was suddenly filled with that of its parents - almost deafening. I guess they stay somewhere nearby while the young'n' regathers its strength for another day.

Makes yer feel good, eh?

a few weeks ago I was taking pictures of the goslings that have hatched from the Canadian geese that come here (NY/NJ area) to nest.
Naturally, I'm trying to get as close as possible, but my digital camera just can't take really good mid-not-quite close ups.
So, of course, mom and dad geese are spitting at me

I didn't get close, but still got a few shots that were ok. I should upload them here for the heck of it!

and those geese are BIG.  :-o

The mother didn't come near me, but she did squawk a bit I think.  I was too surprised in seeing the baby perched on my tyre to take much else in I think :-)

@Cecilia
Aye! Geese are big and mean!
They actually used geese instead of guard dogs at several Swedish prisons. Apparently, they were much more efficient as they make a lot of noise when fed. :-D

That's cute!

I went to my mum's last week and they have wrens nesting under the gutter at their house. One of the fledgelings flew out and landed on my shoulder. That was pretty cool. :-)
