Title: New hard drive... Help!
Post by: Robert17 on June 08, 2004, 05:44:37 PM
Hey all I'm just putting a laptop hard disk into my A1200 which was previously used for a Win98 machine, I'll need to full format that won't I? Also it's 4.1 gb so I'll need to partition that into two pieces, right? It won't let me split it at the moment so I'm just waiting for the full format which seems to be taking some time..

There is no need to full format, you should use Quick format.

I can't now, it wanted me to not have the WB 3.0 floppy write protected so I took it off write protect and it's screwed it so I'll have to get a new workbench disk from somewhere...

Sounds like you asked it to install to the floppy rather than to your HD partition. That's the only reason I can see why the installer should make such a request.

Name your HD boot partition something different from the name on the install floppy, then you won't choose the wrong disk next time.

Cheers,

HDToolbox likes to save a copy of the drive information to the SYS: partition (boot floppy in this case).  I have put it in RAM: in the past to get past this.  Bummer about your disk.  Hopefully you can find a new one.

BTW, you shouldn't need to low level format the disk.  Just create the read drive info, create partitions (make sure one is bootable), save the changes and quick format.

Well it seems like it needs to be able to have write access to the disks to install it to hard disk, what actually happened was my internal drive makes a hash of writing and totally mashed up disks lol silly me for feeding it... I've ordered a new set of workbench 3.0 disks, this time I''ll back them up and use only my external drive :-P

Never never never use Novice mode in Installer !!!!!

It is for expert users only. Always use advanced or expert mode. Novice mode does not ask you any questions but assumes everything is like it was at Commodore's test laboratory. You can assume that almost no Amiga out there works correctly with Novice mode.

And *never* unprotect the Workbench disks. If it asks you to do so, something is going wrong !!! No program needs to write to the original disks. If you want to write to it, use a backup copy.

Bye,
Thomas
