Title: Blizzard USB-kit: possible?!?!
Post by: SKAN on June 08, 2004, 10:35:14 AM
Silly question for the hardware tekkies out there...
Would it be possible to build up an USB kit to plug upon Blizzard's internal SCSI-bus?!?! I think DCE could manage this... what do you think about?
I know, you can point out that highway/subway already exist, but I don't want to tower my A1200, so I'd like to get an USB in my original case... :-D

I´ve seen a guy put USB in his A600, so I guess oi would be possible in an A1200 aswell... He used a Subway..

The Subway perfectly fits into the desktop case. http://www.e3b.de/usb/main_mounting_e.html

USB is not comparable to SCSI, so a USB adapter for the SCSI bus is a custom device with a custom protocol and custom software needed to access it. This probably would be much too expensive to develop.

I don't think he is talking about a generic SCSI<->USB adapter, more like a device to fit onto the expansion connector found on the Blizzard 12x0IV boards. Anyhow, the development costs here would probably also be too much to justify making it, if it was possible at all. If it could be done it would've been damn cool, as this connector must be ? times faster than any clockport.

heh, DMA usb controller...that would have been an Amiga exclusive :-)

Now you know what I mean... :-D  :-D  :-D

I have a device made by Microtech, that is a SCSI 2 to USB converter/adapter that only cost $30.00 new. It's a cable with an enclosed card on the SCSI end. I'm using it on my wintel thing right now - but if they can do this, it should be possible to build something onto an Amiga card as well.

You wont get DCE to have anything to do with making one of those! They have removed all things Amiga from the web site the have and have said they do not support the Amiga at all in any way. For the price you could just get a subway card and use that. They work very well from what I have been told.

Just as well, cos I wouldn`t buy anything they made, and I reckon quite a few people here feel the same way about them.
After the PPC repair fiasco, it`s no wonder they left the scene.
