Title: Using a US A3000 in UK
Post by: leewebb on May 31, 2004, 05:01:00 PM
(Note: this has probably been asked before, but I can't seem to find any appropriate threads.)

I'm thinking of getting an A3000 from the US and have the (rather obvious) following concern:

Power: given the different specs of US vs UK power, how difficult is it to get the US box running on a UK power supply. Can I get a transformer, or do I have to rip out the original PSU and put in a UK one?

I'm presumming that I shouldn't have any trouble with NTSC vs PAL as I believe there's a jumper on the motherboard that I can set.

Anything else that I should be aware of?

Cheers.
Lee.

First thing you need to ask yourself, is there accidently a 220/110 V switch on the power supply ???

My A3000D is rated 240V only, so it's likely the US ones are 110V only.

What you probably need is a transformer that take the 220V down to 110V. Check with some firm that import odd audio and video hardware, they might have it. If you are in the US you should check out Fry's and Radio Shack as I've seen some of these transformers there. I'm not sure they are of the proper Watt/Ampere rating though. Just make sure they convert in the correct direction before buying one.

I have a 110V to 220V convertor that my other half got when she brought a PC back from Canada in '85 - it weighs the same as a breeze block!  You can get up to date (lighter) ones from those places that grey-import games consoles ;-).

NTSC/Pal doesn't really matter if you use the built in scandoubler, and plug it into a VGA monitor.

Hi

if you are good with a soldering iron and have knowledge about electrotechnics you may rework the US-PSU into a european one.
I have had a dead PSU in my 220V A3000T and the only PSU I could get was an 110V type. They are identically, there are only two wires changed in the 110V to the 220V type. I think the A3000 desktop has a simular build PSU and may also be reworked to 220V.
