Hi,
I am curious about the FPU (68882) on my Blizzard 1230.
What kind of software takes advantage of this?
Any games..?
-
games ? normally not (might be quake ...)
every program named xxx.88x or xxxFPU takes advatage. you get a real speedup with most of these programs. see aminet for examples.
-
Quake requires it (although it's pretty unplayable on an 030 in my experience), THX will take advantage of it. Most 3D Raytracing apps will use it (Imagine, Real 3D, Lightwave) and I think some sound software uses it although I can't remember the name.
There are more but that's as much as I can remember right now. :-)

to add:
Fractal rendering apps
mp3 decoder (fpu is slower than intereger, but better quality)
Games? Only quake afaik.

Another type of software which takes advantage is mathematically and scientifically oriented. Octave (a freeware Matlab clone) comes to mind, as I've used that. But you can bet quite a lot on it that any program in the misc/math and misc/sci directories of the Aminet knows how to use the FPU. I seem to recall vaguely that MUI takes advantage of the FPU too, but don't quote me on that: it's been ages since I used an Amiga.

I think Photogenics uses the fpu, but I can't remember.
I think it asks you whether you want to install the fpu or normal version.

Gameswise, I think F1GP, Wing Commander and Tornado take advantage of an FPU. Doubtless many will correct me if I am wrong!!

Thanks for all information!

On 020/030 the fpu is slow, sometimes a program work more faster without fpu (like unrar, for example). The 68882 50mhz = 1,2mips only specifics programs for 3d is done this for make separalery calculations & renders
