Title: A3000D 3.1 ROM chip upgrade
Post by: Relic on May 17, 2004, 10:49:44 PM
I have recently purchased 3.1 ROM chips (v40.68)for my A3000D.  I have installed the chips (3000-0 in U181 socket, 3000-1 in U180 socket), and now the computer turns on, hard drive spins up, but computer will not start, monitor remains dark.
I am using OS 2.04 (OS 3.9 is on it's way).
Any tips?  Jumper settings?

The silkscreen on the mb is wrong on some 3k's, it's quite possible you inserted the roms right according to the print, but if the print is wrong so are your chips.

Try switching places between rom0 and rom1.

Could also be a timing issue, but you should get the machine running even if the rom timing is wrong.

Disconnect the hard drive and power up the system. Make sure you plug in the zorro daughterboard as well, because A3000 don't boot up without it plugged in.

If you get the "Insert Disk" screen, then probably 3.1 roms do not like previously installed 2.04 session on the hard drive.

If you don't want to test it like suggested, then simply power up your machine as is, and hold both mouse buttons immediately after power up and see if you will get into the early boot menu of the kickstart roms.

Great tip!  It worked fine when I unplugged the hard drive, then it worked when I plugged it back in!  I may not have had all my connections secure before... not sure - but that was a good way to test it.  Thanks!
