It's from Virgil's  Aeneid: literally, it means "Learn the justice of watchfulness, and don't tempt the gods."

Or to put in contemporary English...don't take justice into your own hands, or it'll come back and bite you on the ass.

Cheers, but once again I answered my own question with google. Although that translation prog said:

'Learn the justice, and to not scorn the gods.'

Close nuff, cheers anyway. Is it actually a Latin proverb? (It's the final sentence of a story, so it wouldn't surprise me).

(I do actually have a latin phrasebook, but it wasn't in it. Bah.)

I got 17 and a half percent in my Latin exam, it was recommended that I choose another subject... so I took extra Maths :-D
