Title: How do I get Nightlong to start?
Post by: jonssonj on May 12, 2004, 11:00:10 AM
Hello!

Now when I have everything working, I want to play nightlong. I have the 68k version of Nightlong, but it refuses to start.

There is three icons to choose from. There is version 1.2 and 1.1 and there is one version that can be run without a FPU.

If I start the one without FPU, my system crashes immediatly.

If I doubleclick the nightlong 1.1, Nothing happens.

If I doubleclick the nightlong 1.2, Nothing happens.

Is there someone else out there that have played nightlong with a voodoo and mediator? or does the game require cybergraphx and is unplayable on a mediator/voodoo setup?

Hi ;)

I have had Nightlong working on my old A4k and Mediator (no long use that, it works on my peg/mos too ;-)

There are certain files and libraries that you need to have installed for NL to work.

First a suggestion - Copy the entire cd to HD if you have enough room, and then in shell "Assign Q: Games:Nightlong/CD1" (with Games:Nightlong/cd1 wherever you put cd1).  This will speed operations up no end.

Once you have finished CD one, erase that, then copy CD2 to the HD. DO NOT assign Q before loading NL when your on CD2 or 3!!!!  You will need CD1 in the cd drive when you initially start NL now but after you have loaded NL, then make the Q assign, then load the saved game, and then the cd can be taken out again.  Did that make sense? ;)

As to the files needed its been a while since I had that problem. use snoopdos to pin it down. IIRC its the rtg.library and maybe one or two other rtg required files. If you have Clickbooms NAPALM then the necessary files are on that CD. (no idea why they arnt ont he NL cd).

Basically install rtg and it should work.

Hope that solves the problem.

Nightlong needs rtgmaster although it is not mentioned anywhere nor are the files on the CD.

Get rtgmaster from here: http://www.aminet.net/aminet.cgi?string=rtgmaster+user

NL works fine on Mediator + Voodoo.

If you list the contents of all CDs, there are three directories contained on all CDs. Copy these directories into an empty place of your HDD (duplicate files can safely be overwritten). Then assign Q: to it. Of course you need about 1.5GB free space.

Which version of the "rtg master package" is the latest?

- EDIT -

You beat me...  :-)

Thanks again Thomas...

So does it work now?

BTW - do you have the oh so lovely dots around Joshua?  I just ask cause I always did with the 4k and meditator but on my Pegasos I dont - Joshua appears beutifully non-dotty! ;)

Cool, I played NL on the A1200PPC, but I'm not completely through.
Must install it on Pegasos now.

Yes. This seems to be a P96 issue because it happens on both WinUAE and the Mediator, but not on the CVPPC with CGX. Probably the anti-aliasing is calculated incorrectly for little endian screen modes (16bit PC).

I *did* have the ppc executable here somewhere but I'll be blowed if I can find it now - and clickboom have done somewhat with the portal - its just a page with "an exciting announcement is comeing soon" picture on it.

Would someone be able to throw the ppc exe back my way (clickboom recently made all updates freely available, but that page has now disappeared.

Indeed, clickboom have once again revamped their site - and miraculously it seems to have even less content than before! heheh.

Currently I am onto the third CD. (at least i am if the saved game ive just copied over is the same as the last one i played...and Im stuck inside the building (having got past the swamp) and am attemting to work out which is the corect cable to cut to turn power to the electric fence off. cant seem to work that one out yet tho....hmmm. no no! do NOT tell me! it might take me another year, but i'll work it out! ;-)

Ok, so now I have installed the rtg library package V42. When I run Nightlong now I get this message:

No appopriate screen modes available! Have you installed the RTG libraries in LIBS:rtg?

What is missing now? anybody knows?

Nightlong is a quirky SOB. It only runs on 15bit screenmodes (and possibly 16bit)

If you create some new 16bit ones it should automatically produce the 15bit screens NL needs. I cant however remember what size those screens need to be.

The sizes in my NL requestor show as the following:

16bit 640x512
16bit 640x480
15bit 640x512
15bit 640x480

It has the same set twice - once for picasso96 and once for cybergraphics. Naturally on the peg i choose a cgfx mode.
16bit works fine on my Radeon. Not sure if the Voodoo would need a 15bit mode.

We WILL get you up and running I swear it! :-)

And then the fun starts with many hours of puzzle working outs ;)

I fear there are no 15Bit modes in CGX anymore, only 16Bit.
What now ?

Well in my MOS cgfx prefs the 15bit modes are combined with the 16bit ones, shown as 15/16bit blahxblah

Ok.

Right now I have the following screenmodes:

320x240  8 bit
320x240 16 bit
320x240 24 bit
320x240 32 bit

640x480  8 bit
640x480 16 bit
640x480 24 bit
640x480 32 bit

800x600  8 bit
800x600 16 bit
800x600 24 bit
800x600 32 bit

1024x768  8 bit
1024x768 16 bit
1024x768 24 bit
1024x768 32 bit

I have created these screenmodes once and then these screenmodes have been stored on my emergency floppy and now when I reinstalled everything I never had to reinstall picasso96.

So you say I have to install picasso96 and recreate the screenmodes and the 15 bit variations will be created?

You cannot create 15bit modes if the gfx card does not support them, and the Voodoo doesn't AFAIK.

I got this message in WinUAE, too, but with the latest Update (1.2 IIRC) it works now. On my Amiga with Mediator+Voodoo, the PPC version works either.

And please do not mix P96 and CGX, they are different. MorphOS uses CGX and Mediator uses P96.

Hello again!

Ok, There is one Nightlong 68k 1.1 icon and one Nightlong 68k 1.2 icon. But I get the same error whichever I try to run. What can I do to make it work? can someone send me the latest update to jonssonj@internetsuger.com.

Thanks in advance!

I've checked versions and I noticed that on the Amiga version 1.1 which was on the CD is running fine. So I offer you my screenmode settings rather than the NL updates.

Ok, I took your screenmode files and I have installed picasso96 so I could change the frequency but it still would'nt work. Then i reinstalled the RTGMaster library and then it worked a little better. BUT... *sigh* Now the game starts and I can hear the sound and I can see a very strange coloured game. All the colours are mixed up and the game is unplayable. What can this depend on? anyone? Should'nt there be some sort of preferences program for the RTGFMaster library? I can't seem to find any preferences for the RTGMaster...

Title: Re: How do I get Nightlong to start?
Post by: Thomas on May 18, 2004, 09:42:38 AM

You shouldn't change anything in the first run. If you change frequencies you probably also change mode IDs. This causes confusion about the mode to use.

The Picasso96Settings file contains all the available screen modes. Each mode has a unique mode ID.

The RtgScreenMode.prefs file contains the mode ID for Nightlong. If you change Picasso mode IDs, Nightlong will use the wrong mode and display only garbage.

A screemode requester appears if the RtgScreenMode.prefs file is missing when Nightlong is started. Once you click on save, it will create this file and never ask again. Delete the prefs file to get the requester next time you start Nightlong.

The only screen mode to choose for Nightlong is 640x480x16, so you should make sure such mode exists in your Picasso96 settings.

Thomas

Hello again!

Now finally, I got the game running. But it is a little slow because of the cd-access all the time. You mentioned above that I could copy three catalogs that existed on all the three cd:s to the harddrive. I have done that. Then you wrote that I should start the game and then make the Q assign. How do I do that? How can I reach a shell and write the assign commando when the game is running?

Best Regards to you all...

Choose a partition with more than 1.6 GB of free space. Make a directory called Q there.

Each Nightlong CD contains three directories called Data, FMV and NLanim.cdx. Copy these three directories from each CD into the new Q directory, so that you have one Data, one FMV and one NLanim.cdx directory there.

Now edit the file S:User-Startup. Add a line reading

assign Q: Work:Q

where Work:Q is the path to the new Q directory. Make sure there is no other assign for Q: in the User-Startup.

Remove the CD and reboot, now start Nightlong. Whenever it asks you to change the CD, just press enter.

Thomas

Hello!

A big thank you Thomas for all your help. Now Im up and running with Myst and Nightlong. Now I will try to get Quake II to work. I must say that the classic amiga platform is not for beginners...  :-) it has taken me several months now, to get where I am now.

First I had problems finding the hardware I wanted, and still I miss hardware that I can´t find anywhere, and then I had problems with getting the OS to work and then I have had big trouble to get MYST to work and now I had big troubles to get Nightlong to work...  *lol*

Well, Now I am ready to battle with quake. Any tips beforehand?

What is the most recent version of the PPC executable? I've got 1.1...

I don´t know! I don´t have the PPC executable. I would like to have it though.

How does it work? Do you only swap the executable file with the ppc version?

Where can I get hold of the PPC version?

Though one, I don't think clickBOOM will be selling it anymore. And yes, it just replaces the 68k executable.
Title: Re: How do I get Nightlong to start?
Post by: Bifford on May 23, 2004, 11:32:58 AM
Hi

You don't just replace the executable. Unless you want to get really confused.

You need to open up the Nightlong script (the one with the icon) with an editor - ED should work fine. You'll notice two lines in there, a Stack one (leave this alone) and a second line pointing to NL68k. Now fo course you could just rename the PPC exe's to NL68k but that would confuse you, and later you wouldnt know you had the PPC version! So change that line to read "NLppcBIG" or "NLppcSMALL" depending on which works best for you. Save that and then use it as normal.

jonssonj - you'r new to the Amiga scene, yes? In that case you probably won't know about our Amiga shortcuts!!! When you are on any screen you can press "LeftAmiga+N" to instantly jump back to the Workbench screen. And "LeftAmiga+M" to switch between screens - so if you have three screens open then LAmiga+M will go from Workbench to Nightlong to Wipeout (for example).

Don't feel silly though - it wasnt until I got hold of Nightlong and came across that problem that I found out about those two shortcuts myself!!!! ;-) heheh.

Oh, and I notice Thomas got thanked but not me...so I didnt give any helpful advice at all huh? ;-) hmmmm hehe.

Anyway, glad you have it working! Now you have the hard job of battling your way through the game! ;-)

Don't use Clickdumb Quake (only the Datafiles), but some Quake engine from Aminet e.g.
