Title: Amiga 500 sound does not work???
Post by: RMC64 on May 08, 2004, 03:07:47 AM
I just purchased an Amiga 500 with a 1080 monitor. I did not see any audio cables with the package; so I went ahead and connected an RCA generic Y type cable.  The single  end of the audio cable is hooked up to the monitor where it says AUDIO and I am still not hearing any sound coming from the monitor.
Belkin seems to offer a better quality set of cables at

http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=&Product_Id=23672

"RCA Plug Y Adapter

Part # F8V232

This RCA Plug Y Adapter allows you to connect mono components to stereo components with left and right RCA jacks. It splits one RCA-type plug into two RCA-type jacks."

Do you think this may solve my problem?

Thank you in advance

WHY are you using a Y adaptor?

The A500 has stereo outs, and the 1084 monitor has stereo ins...  are you insane?

Once you've tried a bunch of cables and perhaps an alternate speaker set (home stereo?) and you're still getting no sound from the A500- it could be a number of things...

rooted sound chip... or busted power supply. You can have a broken power supply that will still make tha machine go, but certian things like sound and serial ports won't work.

What the hell are u doing with an A500 anyway in 2004?

;) RW

Looks like you are using the wrong cables.. You should get the white/red ones, as the a500 has stereo audio output.

Welcome to the forum btw.

Hi RMC64,

Your monitor speaker amp may have a problem. Try plugging into a boombox or something.

welcome to Amiga.org, RMC64.  :-)

I'd try plugging the Amiga into a stereo with an AUX input, to make sure the Amiga is outputting sound properly.  The configuration you've described should be working.  I used to use a Y split with my 1084 (not stereo model).

In hindsight, it would probably be better to use a gated Y joint than a simple Y splitter.  This would remove the possibility of shorting your left channel into your right one.  ;-)  I, personally, don't know of anyone who ever damaged an Amiga by this, though, so I'd think it unlikely to happen.

Hi,

Although, I am getting conflicting Amiga analog signals responses I am filtering through the data. Letting the mud settles seems to help though ;) He he

Thank you all for your prompt aid and courtesy. I am a real novice (as you already figured it out) and I always dreampt of having an Amiga in my room; not in 2004 :(
My first computer was a c-64 and I still adore her ;)

I bought the A-500 to fullfill my old 12 year old dream desire. Should I get an A600 model instead?
I just wanted it to program the machine in C, Basic and  play games like Ultima and such.  I have the strong Intuition that the receptacle for the audio in the back of the 1080 is sort of offering a weak connection and not providing me a good contact. I connected two radio Shack RCA likes (red and white terminals) from the back of the computer (left and Right audio receptacles) then used the Y connector to connect it where is says AUDIO (white) in the monitor rear.
I don't know how or whether to use VIDEO (yellow) and CROMA (red) receptacles. I assume CROMA is for color and utilized to plug an external device. ??
What is the the MONO hole in the back of A500 used for? For a Monochrome monitor? The machine is connected to the monitor RGB input hole through an RGB cable.

yes, I adusted the button sound; although I am not sure which way the button volume increases or decreases the volume to the right or to the left?. Please bear in mind that I just bought this machine in Ebay and it lack hardware documentation.

The E, L and Space-Bar keys need hard tapping though. I disconnected the keyboard, used a vacuum cleaner ( boy that thing was filthy) and I added several drops of 123 oil in the keyboard and it seems to make a better contact specially for the L letter key (it was missing its onscreen printing ability).
I want to find me a keyboard replacement and solve this problem soon. :-?

The monitor flickers a lot.  Is that normal for innon-interlaced mode?

I managed to test the machine with one of the games provided like MINE or something and it seems to work without flickering the image, but with no sound. I could not load the other games though.
I.e. Ultima game was missing its second disk, Populous game failed to load. :(
This A500 came with workbench 1.3 floppy and it reads like 888,000 free memory at booting time.  Is this a 1 meg RAM machine? Do you think?

P.S Yes, I have at Home two pentium machines :)and  I am not left behind with technology as you may think.

No, I think the A500 is just a perfect starting machine :-)

Title: non-working disks, y-splitter, etc.

@RMC64

Your games disks might be old and non-working, but given that you said how filty the A500 was, you should try cleaning the floppy drive out, too. Get one of those head cleaner diskettes and run it throught there a few times. A can of air isn't a bad idea, either. I had some Amiga's in storage for a while and when I tried some disks, many didn't work. I cleaned out the drives and the disks started working again.

About your sound. I say, don't ram the monitor volume to any one extreme. Try putting it in the middle so you know it's not at zero volume. Run some stereo or vcr audio  through the monitor to test it. If that doesn't work, you know it's the monitor and not the computer. If it does work, then it's probably the computer.

The Y-splitter audio cable dealy you got with the A500 is for an A501. That thing makes it so you can use a TV with the Amiga, and it only has one audio-in hole so it comes with the splitter so you can connect the A500 stereo audio up to it and everything (video + audio) goes out through one cable to your TV. It's a good way to record your Deluxe Paint animations with a VCR, too. Easy peasy home-movie credits, hehe. :-)

Thank you all for the hints and advice! I will try to see if the sounds comes live tomorrow morning :)

I have a question: since I did not hear any sound, when you first boot up the machine am I expected to hear any sound at all just like in MS Windows start up? or do I need to have a game or application in order to test any type of sound?

Out of mere curiousity: Do you know if an Amiga A2500 or later models are capable of playing most of the premium games released for the A500?

HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!

There is no default boot-up sound.  The "SAY" program on your workbench (or extras?) disk will speak a word that you type in, though.  Also, I think there is a default error beep.  So workbench can make some sounds, but not many.  There is a key command that will beep an AmigaDOS 1.3 machine, but I forget what it is.

Well, yes, and no.  Most will play, if you turn off certain custom features, kick down to 1.3, etc...  It's kind of a magical art getting old games to work on high-spec machines.    And not an easy learning curve for it.  :-(

The say command can be run from the Workbench disk (both 1.3 and 2.04). It is found in the Utilities Drawer. Just type a word or sentence and hit return from the bottom window, and the phonetic spelling is displayed in the top window. BTW to quit hit Ctl-C, then hit return.

The default error beep is not an actual audible sound, as from what I understand, there is not an onboard hardware speaker like the PC's. From what I remember reading from the Autodocs ( I could be wrong here), the error beep is simulated by a flash of the screen.

A1000's bootup with a weird doot-doodley-doodley-doo type sound.

Hi RMC64,

Click on my handle to see info on my powered up 2000.
Most games play from HD. one game "Birds of prey" is picky and wants you to stick  in the disk and warm reboot. One other game "Strike Fleet" needs you to boot into 68000.

I kind of mis-stated.  You are correct, there is no hardware speaker.  The default beep is a flash of the screen, and a software generated beep out the regular Amiga audio-out.  In WB2.04 and later, you could customize this "beep" or replace it with a sound sample.

This consist (more or less) of the Horn Motif from Richard Wagner's "Siegfried", the third part of the "Ring des Nibelungen", transposed four half-tones down. The diagnostic routines of the boot ROM of the A1000 were written by a man called Siegfried Bleher.

Wow! That is an amazing fact. Thanks for that. You just gave me a reason to unpack my old A1000 and fire her up and give it a closer listen. I had forgotten about that little chime.  :-o

Well I just fired the old girl up, but not a peep out of her during the boot. The rest of the machine is working fine however. I tried out 'Say' and recieved normal response from the sound.

I am not even sure now if it ever did chime during bootup now that I think of it???? It has been so long now...

Did all revisions of the A1000 chime on bootup, or did someone just pull my leg!!!

Hi

> Did all revisions of the A1000 chime on bootup, or did someone just pull my leg!!!

As I know, all A1000 play this melody during system check. The melody is played only after a cold start (power on) just before the floppy disk drive is accessed to read the Kickstart disk that should be placed there.
Maybe your A1000 has a rework to use a Kickstart ROM instead of a disk ? Then this sound may not occur.
Or you have powered-on your monitor too late ?

The tones are output over various channels, so you should even hear something if your left or right audio-channel is dead.

Ahh yes, I was busy, but just got back to the A1000 and checked the connections, and cranked the volume to the max. Sure enough, The chirp is there again! It seems to be very low in volume, and with the noise of the hard drives on the A590 beside it, I could not hear it before. With age comes confusion, memory loss and now hearing I guess.

Relearn something old every day!

I have a wav sample of the A1000 boot chime now if anyone still wants it.
I made it the default Windows start sound in my Windows XP sound scheme for old times sake...
