Try reducing the resolution.

What scanning software are you using?
With SANE, I ran into a problem that the program would let me select a resolution that my scanner didn't support, and the picture would be cropped very oddly. It also complained about memory issues, when clearly I had enough RAM to cover... I'd double check scanner software settings.

Which machine you are using ? A classic Amiga with 512MB ? Wow...How ?

Betascan is free if I remember correctly and works a charm on my miggy. You might want to try that out.

Betascan = Amiga port of SANE. (I actually use BetaScan. Sorry for the confusion!) Anyhow, other than having to set resolution carefully, I agree, it's a great solution. I whole-heartedly endorse it.
