Having just ditched my copy of MS Win ME (sounds like a disease doesn't it!!) I have installed Linux and am wanting to network the two boxes. I have the hardware to network was hoping to get some advise on the method, software required?? Am not a novice just a little rusty?? :-P

What do you want to do when they're networked? Transfer files?
FTP on one or both machines should be enough?
-
Was thinking ftp to start with, then a full network? Was thingking probly should learn to walk before running a marathon...
-
what do you mean by a full network? You have to connect the two machines together with ethernet adapters, configure TCP/IP with two IP addresses on the same subnet, and you've already got a 'full network' without the FTP...

@mikeymike,
your from location info type thing is taken from Blackadder right?? The episode where he pretends to be mad to get out of the army...
-
I'm just new to the whole networking bit and am unsure of the whole TCP/IP thing
-
Well, I have networked my A1200 with my WinXP box using AmiTCP on amiga and an NFS server on the Windows system. NFS is pretty much standard for Linux / Unix so all you need is a NFS client for your Amiga

@ dezignersrepublic
yep. blackadder goes forth - goodbyeee.

Hmm. This could turn into a *very* long post :-)
Ok, you need TCP/IP stacks running on both machines. As one is running Linux, I think it's very likely a TCP/IP stack will be running :-) On the Amiga, you need a TCP/IP stack installed (I use Miami).
After that, you need to set up a network.
You'll need the following stuff:
- 1 UTP crossover cable (or 2 normal UTP cables and a cheap hub)
- 1 ethernet adapter per machine. On the Amiga I have no idea of your setup so I won't recommend an option for you.
After you have the adapters installed and drivers installed, you need to configure TCP/IP for those adapters. I can't say off the top of my head how exactly to do this on both operating systems, but I can probably give you enough info to educated guess you way through.
Each machine needs an IP address. Use:
192.168.0.1
192.168.0.2
Each machine also needs to know the subnet they're on, use:
255.0.0.0
leave gateway, DNS servers and everything else blank.
Connect up the ethernet adapters with the cable. You should be able to get the cable from a reasonably techie computer shop, or from a college if you ask nicely.
I'll stop there for now :-) any questions, or when you've successfully got this far, just ask.
