Hi,
Does anybody know if/where one can obtain straight sections of heatpipe (preferably bendable, but without breaking it) ?
I'm thinking to turn my case side panel into a heatsink for my BPPC. There really isn't much room for more conventional fan-based cooling and I thought I could bring the 040 + BPPC cooler block into true thermal contact with the side of the case (it already is almost)...

The highter the boilng point the longer the tube can be, anyway, just get some tiny bore copper piping, crimp+solder one end, half fill the pipe with your liquid (some organic solvent?) evacuate the pipe as much as you can with a small air pump, then crimp the open end closed, solder to make sure you've got a nice seal.
bingo! one heat pipe. (remember hot bits at the bottom, heat sink at the top.)

Actually, all the pipes I looked at have a cord of some material inside that draws the condensed coolant back to the source by capilliary action, so orientation is not an issue. The cord has to be "wettable" by the coolant for this to work.
All said, I don't have an air pump to hand or any spare freons kicking about ;-)

Heh... I remember being able to stop in most any automotive supply store and fix this problem by purchasing an "Air Conditioner Recharge Kit." Heh... Good ole' days for the backyard chemist. Probably not such good days for the ozone layer, though. ;-)

Even when I was still a chemist, I didn't have my own personal air pump + stash of refrigerant solvents at home :lol:

I have a very small heatsink lying around at work that came out of a laptop. It seems to have a heatpipe gizmo attached. It also has space for a tiny fan (unfortunately missing).
I can bring it round tomorrow (if I remember) to see if you can find any use for it.
It was about to be binned in the next clean up operation (rare occurrences in a technicians lab :lol: ) We'll see if it turns out to be useful, if not, we'll just bin it anyway

Sure, I'll see if I can try it out. My alternative plan is to build a guide duct that directs the flow of air from a case cooling fan to the affected area, although I'm not sure how effective it would be.
