Hi,
I recently got an Amiga 500. I had a broken floppy drive and came with no disks. I managed to get a PC drive to work, and I was able to play Lotus II on it (had this floppy in my pc disk collection, from when I borrowed an Amiga years back)
Anyway, I need a copy of Workbench so I can get a pc <> Amiga transfer cable thing going so I can write some demos and games to disk. I can't find a copy of Workbench 1.3 ANYWHERE.
Is there any way at all to get a copy of this on floppy? I presume writing a 720k dos disk wont work to boot from in the Amiga?
Can anyone point me to a place to get Workbench 1.3 on disk?
-
I'm not sure where you could get that, but since I have a vanilla A2000 with all the disks etc, if it doesn't violate some kind of law or anything, I'd be happy to Lharc and email you one, if you can find a way to copy it onto an amiga disk, but failing that I could even snail mail one copy out. Anybody reading this know of a legal reason why we couldn't do that?
-
It would be interesting to know the answer to that. Since Amiga sold the "OS" to KMOS it would seem the rules about that may have changed. I have the 1.3 disks from my A500 but I wouldn't want to offend anyone.

Copying Workbench disks breaks the law, no matter who owns the copyright.
An LhA archive (or DMS or ADF or whatever) does not help at all because without a running Amiga you cannot write it to disk and without a working disk you cannot get the Amiga running.
So find someone near you who gives you a copy of Workbench on floppy disk.
Bye,
Thomas

Hi

No, I don't think so in every case, the Workbench was sold bundled to the Amiga computer, so if you own an Amiga, you should also own the rights for a Workbench version. The copy of the Workbench could be seen as something like a legal backup of own disks (that have been lost in space someday ;-)).

Since the purchace and ownership of the A500 included the operating system, it is perfectly legal to provide a backup copy of that system. Technically the owners of the operating system IP should provide that backup copy, but I honestly doubt anyone at KMOS has ever even seen a 1.3 disk.

Thanks for the replies :)
Would anyone want to send me a copy of Workbench? I live in Ireland, and I guess I could Paypal over a few pounds/dollars for the cost of postage.

Pmail me your address and I'll copy it for you.
I'll even include some terminal proggy so you can transfer pc->amiga via null modem. Got tenfold of unused DS/DD disks here that I bought masses of when shops stopped stocking them.

So....what sort of terminal program with Zmodem should work on WB1.3? Could someone help me out here if borat wants the program?

Thanks :)
Can I send my address to the MSN email address you have listed on your user profile?

I've used Amigacall 4.0 with my A1000 and a 1200 baud modem (SPEEEEED :-D) back that days. Later I used the better NComm 2.0 and a 14400 baud modem at my A3000T, but this should also run with an A500/Kick 1.3. Both programs support Zmodem.

Yep! Either that or use amiga.org's pmail function. Both of those methods would work.
Beware though, I live in Norway, so getting someone inside the UK to ship would be faster if you're impatient :-)

Hehe didn't see the PM function when I first looked.
I don't mind waiting at all.
-
Got your pmail :-)
Ok, I have found the WB and extras disk now, I just have to find some terminal program that'll work on a WB1.3 machine. And then fire up my 4000T to copy the disks. (Shame on me, I haven't used it for a month...) I don't think I'll post it tomorrow, but over the weekend I think I'll have it ready.
-
Cheers :-D

Oops...sorry man, but this week has been busy...
I have found the disks, I just need to copy them now and put them in an envelope.
So I'll post them this weekend

So, How do you prove you should have a copy of Amiga OS? That is other than face to face showing the other person that you own an Amiga. I think that's the kink in the works.

Uhm...I'm sending him a copy of Workbench1.3 on OFS formatted floppy's...only way he could use them is in an Amiga.
I don't see the problem here, I would have if we talked DMS/ADF files.
-
No worries about the delay :)
I guess back in the day, whoever originally bought this Amiga would have got Workbench with it (so it was paid for) I guess he just lost the disks.
-
Well...
1. Nobody sells WB1.3 anymore.
2. He can only use the disks in an Amiga, hence it should be legal.
3. If that annoys you, I'll make some auto-booting floppy with just the freeware programs he needs.
4. If that also annoys you, I'll send him my original WB1.3 disks.
5. Please....this is not piracy. Maybe not 110% legal, but...
-
Oh, I wan't saying that there is anything wrong with this. I was just taking off on Bloodline's post. Basically, when is it piracy.
Obviously, a PC user using emulation would have a near impossible time trying to use and Amiga formatted disk. There are ways, but not many would have the ablilty to do it. Also, sending a zip, lha, or dms presents basically the same problem to someone with an Amiga with no OS.
So, basically it comes down to if someone pops on asking for an OS disk. You ask them for their POST address and ship them a disk. If they don't like that, then they probably dont' need it as they don't own an Amiga.
I was just brewing discussion.

@Borat!
I've finally done it :-)
Copied WB1.3 and Extras 1.3, I also included a disk with various utilities such as diskmaster, xcopypro, protracker, bootx, saddam-killer, along with some others useful programs. Actually I compiled that disk 11 years ago
:-o
And then I made you a bootable disk with NComm on it, so you can start up&downloading with your pecee at home.
I tried my best to check it with Kick1.3 and WB 1.3, but I couldn't get it to work satisfactory in my 4000T. I'm 99,9% sure it'll work fine in your A500.
I'll put it in the mailbox tomorrow. Cheers!
