Title: can you install OS3.5 without cd-rom??
Post by: kvasarnomad on April 20, 2004, 10:58:30 PM
I wondered if its possible to install OS3.5 without a cd-rom.
Can I transfer the content of the cd over samba from my Linux-Box to the amiga with OS3.1 and then run the installer?
I would really only need a cd-rom for installing OS3.5 so it would save me some money and trouble.

don't you need the CD to install the boing balls?

i suppose a clever person could alter the install scripts.

@cecilia

I think the "check the CD drive for the OS CD" was more an OS3.9 thing.

I've installed 3.5/3.9 fine in a variety of ways, but not over a LAN.

I installed 3.9 over a LAN and that worked fine (BB updates wouldn't work though, had to get my drive working for that). I think I installed 3.5 from a folder on my drive, so yeah, that should work from anywhere too.

Hum,
i think i copied by hand all the 3.5/9 files, checking the version numbers as well, straight onto a HD containing 3.1....

Lan would be no differant...

my 2$...

Hi

if your HD is large enough, it should work if you copy the contents of the CD via net or seriell or laplink cable from a PC to the Amiga (if the PC is able to read the CD errorfree, don't know if it is formated in enhanced RockRidge format that isn't readable completely by a PC -- the Amiga-specific attributes like protection bits and filecomments wouldn't be recognized).
Then you make an assign to this directory named equal to the CD and start the installation.
