Title: Icons Destroyed
Post by: NightShade737 on April 16, 2004, 11:49:55 PM
After setting up P96 on my WinUAE installation no WHDLoad games or programs work any more. The screen goes black and I hear sound, but I don't see anything (the size of the Window also changes).

Anyway, I set up a blank 3.1 installation to use, and was browsing through my giant folder of software to install on my real Amiga when I get it back and obviously all the icons either looked crap or were dots. Well, to my horror, after going back to the 3.9 install they all looked the same! They were now all either dots or 8 colour crapped up icons.

To test to make sure it was 3.1 doing this, I went back to 3.1 and opened the A-Train folder, then went back to 3.9, and sure enough, it was all wrecked and mangled.
Does anyone know if there is any way to get the icons back or restored or am I stuck with thousands of now mangled and usless icons?

The only things I did to the icons was unsnapsot all the folders in the root folder (the big window) to sort the files alphabetically. The A-Train icons were snapshoted.

So basically using either of those features on anything other than 3.9 seems to ruin the icons.

Summary:
The icons were fine under 3.9. I then booted a different workbench install (3.1) and unsnapshotted the icons. I then went back into 3.9 and the icons are no wrecked. Keep in mind I have done NOTHING else to either installation other than unsnapshotting that folder.

Hum,
looks ok to me...

Try removing the `newicons` in the c directory.
(newicons.library in LIBS: as well)

(strange that it happened all by it`s self though)

icon datatype corrupt?

er, you could put them through (drag an drop) icon editor to sort the colours etc and use the new icon format that 3.9 uses as well...

Looks ok? Look at the colours? And those 'dots' once were folder icons!

Hum,
i must stop taking that stuff...

Try `convert icons` in the bonus BB1 To convert them back...

(or was it in the `contributions` bit on the CD?)

They are in Workbench 3.1 and older, 3.5 and such support them natively anyway.

Load the icons into Tools/IconEdit. If it's a newicon,
then it will tell you it will remove the newicon info.
OK the requester & re-save the icon.

You can also open Prefs/WorkBench & play with the icon
settings on the right like "no newicons" & the quality
settings. If I check on "no newicons" then some of my
icons turn to dots. Make sure it's off.

I had to replace some older icons with 256 color glow
icons when going from 3.1 to 3.9.

I haven't changed that setting, nor does it make any difference when I change it. I just copied the folder to another machines 3.9 installation and the icons look the same. There is nothing wrong with anything other than the icons. It seems that unsnapshotting those various types of icons under 3.1 just ruins them.

Loading the icons into Iconedit just gives me the crappy icon for both new and old icons.

It doesn't seem like I am going to be getting them back.

New rule, don't touch icons below WB3.5 :(
