I'm wondering if it's possible to upgrade the search facility so that it provides a small line of the content that it found. Simmilar to what google does.

Of course it's possible, it's only code...
Though hacking the code just makes it harder to upgrade as every hack has to be applied or adapted to the new release. It's much better to seek to have the "hack" added as a feature to the development version.
As such I've posted your request to the Xoops Features Request Forum (http://www.xoops.org/modules/newbb/viewforum.php?forum=10). Hopefully, enough users will comment that they want this or one of the dev team will think it a cool idea and work on adding it.
