Title: When was your 1st Amiga
Post by: swift240 on April 13, 2004, 06:48:51 PM
I bought my first ever Amiga in 1992 Amiga 600.
I jumped from a Commodore 64c to this new Amiga machine.
I was amazed by the Workbench and the games with all those colours.
I paid £200.00 at the time from Comet in Redditch one Saturday afternoon.

2 weeks before that I got my very first Amiga magazine on the front cover was a 2 floppy disks with "Interword" on
I worked a week of my holliday to get the over time money.
This was 12 years ago.  All I could do was read and read until I got my A600.

Now I got a 1200 expanded.
Do you remember your very first ever Amiga and when it was?
And your first program for it?

Mike......

My first experiences with amiga were back in 1986 or so. I didn't get to own one until 1992, again an A600, a present from my Mum who could remember my earlier droolings.

I hadn't been into computers for some time, but I was soon hooked again. I got myself an A1200 by the end of the same year.

I still used my A600 right up until a few years ago when it mysteriously died :-(

I used to have it connected to my then 1.28Gb HD 16Mb 040 A1200 via a parallel connection and booted from a custom floppy that launched ParNET. OS2.05 was installed in a folder on the A1200's hard disk and all the assigns and stuff were set there during booting. It was cool :-D

I still have the A600 in the hope I can get it fixed at some stage, but that depends on working out what died in the first place...

I got my first amiga(an a500) in 1988, the first program i got, was deluxe paint II, and DOC`s SoundTracker.

Ahhh, happy times! Also discovered the demo scene shortly after, used to impress friends with the red sector megademo, they shortly after bought Amiga`s aswell   :-)

My first Amiga was an A600 too. I got it in 1993 short before Commodore went under. It was a blow out sale at Karstadt for 299 DM. The first Softwar eI got was Wingcommander and I got it over 2 Months in advance. Yes I completed Wingcommander on a bog standard A600 playing from floppy.
The first expansions I got was an external secondary drive and a 1MB Chip-RAM expansion at 149 DM each.
Those were the days ;-)

My first amiga was the A1000 in 1986.

Upgraded to A2000 when is first appeared.

Skipped the A3000.

Upgraded A2000 ----> A4000 when A4000 first appeared.

Have also owned A500, A1200 & CD32 at one time or another.

Currently only have the orignal (almost, new MB) A4000.

Also Amiga Forever 4.x for my WindBlows machines:roll:

I asked my dad for an A1000 after seeing Deluxe Music Construction Set and Arctic Fox running on one.  I think I got it in '87.  Eventually got a 2MB fast RAM upgrade that plugged into the CPU socket and filled the entire top of the machine.  Man, that was a lot of memory chips.  :-)

I went straight to the A1200HD.  I got the first one in stock, and replaced the 40MB drive with an 85MB, 6MB fast RAM, and an FPU (for 3D rendering).  I was really disappointed with it, though.  The CPU was too damn slow, and the hard drives (both of them) were REALLY noisy and parked the heads continuously after each access.  I was rather surprised that so many of my old games worked, though.  I used it mostly for DPaint and MIDI through OctaMED.  I bought my first PC (a 386) a year later, but only used it for DOS games.  Win95 was my first Windows.  I'm thankful I never had to endure Win 31.  If I did, I probably would never had gotten that 386.  ;-)

Funny how a computer manufactured in '92 defaults to the year '77!  Not putting a battery clock in the A1200 was pretty dumb.  I'm glad my FPU board came with one.

I've started with a ZX Spectrum 48k, somewhere in 1983. My dad sold it in 1986 and bought us shortly a C64c. Ever since I've heard of A500 I wanted it badly, but I wasn't able to get one until mid 1995. My friends were all into music making on their Amigas. I spent days and months at my friend's place playing around in ProTracker on his A600. Finally, I was able to purchase an A500 in '95.

I brought it to another friend who was familiar with soldering, so that he could modify my A500 to detect 1MB of chip ram instead of half/half. I needed this in order to be able to compose more comfortably in ProTracker. :-)

My first Amiga was (and still is - I still own it) an A500 bought in February 1990.  Beforehand I'd had a Spectrum 128k +2, and the jump to Amiga was nothing short of astonishing.  Within a year, the A500 had an A501 RAM expansion, twin external floppy drives, a Mastersound sampler and a Phillips CM1183 Monitor.

I can never forget playing stuff like Batman the Movie, Interceptor and Shadow of the Beast and thinking "wow!".

Since then I bought an A1200 in January 1994 (which I'm using right now) which has been upgraded over the years ;-)

Elsewhere I have a PS2 and an Athlon 2500 PC.

Mine was (still is) an Amiga 500 that I bought from a friend in the summer of 1990.  It was bare bones, stock at the time.  I have since upgraded it a lot.  Check out all my computers at my About My Computers (http://mikerye.homeip.net/about_my_computers.html) page.

My first amiga is my A2000 that I bought last year!!

but I have been using them since '86 and mostly using the toaster from '91-'94!

I waited almost 10 years before i could get my hands on one with the toaster!!

I saw a500 in a thrift store in '96 when I went to the ATM and came back some {bleep} snached it before I could get it! :pissed:

I got my first Amiga 500 back in 1987 when they first came out. We were actually going to the shop to buy a Commodore 64, but the guy there showed us how awesome the Amiga was, and after handing over around $1000, we were the proud owners of the world's most advanced (and coolest) computer.

I've never owned an amiga.

ok, just kidding.

well, my first comp was a TI/994A, and I later got an Atari 400 second hand, and then a CoCo Model III, and then finally got a Commodore 64.

nevermind the dates being mixed up, some were new, some used....and then I got a Atari 520ST, which was an awesome experience, of course I knew the Amiga was better, but I was cost sensitive.

Eventually I did get an Amiga, starting with an Amiga 1200, later getting a towerized version of the same, and work gave me an A2500 which I promptly got rid of...

I have no amiga at this time.

Amiga 2000, just the box but with two floppy drives.

DPaint lll
Word Perfect

I still have it. I added memory (8UP)
accellerators - i think it's got a Dillinger 030

it used to have a supraDrive, but that died at some point. i forget what's in there now controlling the HD.

added DCTV
oh, and a Studio16 (mono) card.

my other 2000 has the Magnum 040 and an OpalCard. but i stipped using that after I got a spectrum card.
that HD died and i haven't had time or money to replace it.
someday.

I got my first one way back in 1986. It was a demo model of the A1000 that I got a few hundred off for taking it! It still looked new to me though. My first app was a game. Defender of the Crown. I loved that came. I kept that system for a long time too. I then got a A3000 in 1991 and Just got rid of it this month and Picked up a Pegasos II with a G4 in it. Very nice system too!

I got my first Amiga about 18 months ago. Someone gave me an A600 with no PSU, no mouse and a dead floppy drive. I decided to try and do something with it. Everyone soon told me not to bother so I bought a 1200 and it's now most of the way on to being a tower system (I'm STILL waiting for the tower and k/b adapter!). I'm slowly learning Amiga OS and all the various nuances after a life of PCs and Macs.

Yup. It was an A500. I upgraded from a C64. :=). I still got both, though neither works. I'm in the process of diagnosing the A500 to see if I'm able to fix it. I can't seem to find out what's wrong with the C64 (blank screen on boot), but I've got several working ones so it's not a big deal. I got several working A500s too :)

As for the date, it was in the spring of 1987. Great spring :) I spent literally hours "talking" with my Amiga through the speech program, so I guess you could call that the first program I used. I didn't actually talk to it, but rather tried to teach it how speak norwegian properly.

I bought the *incredibly expensive* 512Kb memory module after buying Dungeon Master and not getting it to work. God I played that game to death. I still love getting into it :=)

Ahhh.. sweet, sweet memories.

My first Amiga was an amazing Amiga 500. I bought it back in late 1989, early 1990. This was just prior to starting college to study computing. I had been working on a `work placement` at the company I otherwise only worked  weekends at, full time for a few weeks, and earned just enough to splash out on a nice new computer. I didn't have any computers before that except a second hand ZX Spectrum 16 which had been expanded to 48k. We occasionally borrowed my uncles Amstrad CPC464 which had a few fun games on it.

While some other people thought I should've bought a leather jacket or whatever, the Amiga was certainly an amazingly cool thing to get. It seemed almost mystical as being one of the only systems with a mouse at the time, back when computer mice were not at all commonplace. I thought it was amazing alone just because it had a mouse. But what sold me on the Amiga? I very almost would've bought an Atari. But, upon seeing an ad in a very early Amiga magazine, I saw paint programs running on both the Amiga and the Atari. Even though the Atari was.. ooh, 300 uk pounds at the time, the Amiga was 400 uk pounds, looking at the Amiga screenshot I just couldn't help but be thoroughly enthused, especially with how the Amiga was described and what this paint program could do.. ... Of course, it was Deluxe Paint. At the time, that was version 2, and it looked so amazing, it is what sold me rather than opting for *any* other platform including pc or mac.

So I bought an Amiga 500, it had 1/2 meg chipmem. I later got a 1/2 meg upgrade and then later a 1 1/2 meg upgrade. I couldn't afford anything more back then because memory expansions were super-amazing peripherals costing hundreds of dollars. The Amiga and me, it was meant to be. My dad couldn't understand how a whole computer could be fitted inside a small little wedge shape like that... and he had seen a lot of electronics in his time since that was his line of work. If I remember rightly, silly me, I switched the Amiga on, and off, at the power supply, in quick succession, in my first attempt to reboot it having screwed something up... and the power supply blew! lol .. well, oh well, a week or two of frustrated waiting later and I was in heaven again. So began the Amiga years, a time of wonderful creativity and fun.

Oh.. my first program? hmm.... Must've been workbench 1.3 of course, but beyond that it was the Deluxe Paint 2 that came with the computer. That was so cool! Also there were some games that came with it as part of the Amiga Magick pack. I LOVED datastorm, but there were also others like wizkid, tower of babel, and a bunch of others I cant remember the names of.

My first coverdisk was probably Amiga Computing coverdisk that had Med 1.3 on it (the music app)... and an executable version of a cool tune that I kept forever. I think Med was another of my earliest apps.

1989.  I got an Amiga A500 and 1084S.  I can't remember what the pack was called but it came with KindWords, Indy Jones, and a few others.  Around 91 or 92 I considered upgrading it with a GVP 530.  But, decided to buy an A3000 which was about the same price ~$1300.  Best choice I ever made!  Eventually I upgraded the A500 with a MTec-020i (w/4M), Dataflyer 240MB SCSI HD, ROM switcher, etc.  It was a nice system and worked great until I parted it out about 5 years ago.

First heard about the Hi-Torro Lorraine in 1983. Read all about it in 1984 from the Winter CES Report in Compute! magazine. Much drool commenced.

July 1985 got my first AmigaWorld Magazine. Dreams became really colorful.

October 1985 - Dreams become reality:

A1000 with A1080 monitor & A1010 external floppy
Came with Kick/WB .9x (can't remember exactly)
Textcraft
Graphicraft
ABasiC
Mindscape Demo
The Boing Demo
The futuristic City Demo

The OS, Textcraft and Graphicraft were extremely buggy, and there was not much RAM left to do anything. The Boing demo blew me away, and the City demo's display was weird, and if you moved the mouse too much, the demo would slow to a crawl.

A week later, got another identical system, but also got:

Extra 256K for both machines
Deluxe Paint 1.0

By November 1985, upgraded both to Kickstart/Workbench 1.0. Huge performance increase, along with stability, but still quite a few crashes.

In January/Febuary 1986 (can't remember) got Kick/WB 1.1, and my first copy of Amazing Computing Magazine.

I have never looked back since...

Other notable events:

Met Jim Butterfield, Dale Luck, RJ Mical, all of NewTek, et al. at various USA west coast Amiga shows.

August 1987 helped in the creation of Sistemas Delta in Costa Rica, a software development house / computer store. (search for various C and Basic programs), and helped develop R.U.M.S. (Rental Unit Management System - hotel management software).

In September 1992 met Jay Miner at the unveiling of the A4000 and A1200 in Pasadena CA. GRHS.

In 1998 got Boing Ball logos and Amiga stickers from Petro mailed to me (at his cost).

I now have two A1000's, one A500, one A2000 (w/VideoToaster 2.0), three A3000's and one A4000 (w/VideoToaster Flyer).

Awaiting for release of OS4 and cash for AmigaOne G4.

In 1987, I got a C=64 for my birthday present :-D.  Then I sold it(regretfully :-( , and missed it too)in 1994 and got me an A600 from a friend dear to me. Used it for 2 days. and ask if I could replace it with an A500+. I still have my A500 with me. After a year bought an external drive from a friend and still alive and kicking, although at times I need to press the IC in its socket to boot, gets loose at times. BTW: when I returned the A600, the owner(with Jay Miner now in Amiga Heaven ) told me to keep the ROM 2! WOW!  :-o To my surprise it worked on the A500. and the A600, well he slipped in a ROM 1.3. It worked too. :-o  Though the enhancements(PCMCIA&HDD) never work but it boots fine on a floppy and is able to play old games he owns. He used to own a retal shop full of PC, but he kept an A1200 under a desk. I worked there for the whole summer vacation to pay for the A500 and some mags. He made me drool like hell when he showed me his brand new and smells new A1200. He told me I should read mags on Amiga stuff. I was introduced to AMIGA WORLD:angel:, bought a few issues, but subscribed to AMAZING Computing/Amazing Amiga  Hope I don't made you all cry but that's life. or after life

Hmmmmmm, musta been about 1986 or so.  Heard about this fantastic new computer that could do things no other could, the Amiga 1000.  Bought it with the 256k ram expansion, external disk drive, Okimate 20 color printer, and the 1084 color monitor.  All for the bargain price of about $2200.00 USD.  Would you believe I still have it and it still works?  Wouldn't part with any of it.

Forgot to mention that along with my first A1000 I got MindWalker (originally called WindWalker, but there were trademark issues IIRC) created by Synapse Software. It was one of the most amazing games. Does anyone else remember it? I believe it was the first game to use HAM for certain parts of the game, and it was THE first game for the Amiga, but never got fully released until mid-1996 under Commodore's lable. Thank God I had some connections ;-).

I remember a good friend getting the original Amiga, later renamed to A1000, sometime in -86. It had more or less just come out on the market here.

I was so amazed by this and the drooling started at once. I myself had had the original C=64 since autumn -83 and seing the work you could do with the Amiga, he was a musician just like me and played around a lot with samples and stuff, completely stunned me.

When a classmate later on brought his A1000 to school to show his programming work in computer-class, I just knew I HAD to get one ASAP. Programming Pascal on a Nord-100 with 12 terminals wasn't just good enough and my 64 didn't feel adequate anymore.

But it took until after my military service in september 1988 that I could get what I wanted. After being in my first job for 2 weeks I ran off to the bank and took a loan so I could get it. A 500 with the A1010 extra drive, the 1084 monitor and my first game, F/A-18 Interceptor.

I was in heaven and my girlfriend didn't see me at all in about a week..

About a year later I got the memory expansion A501 with battery for the clock. It took me a few more years but in 1992 I got my first harddrive. A GVP Series II controller with 4 megs of ram and a 120 MB harddrive. Upgraded to kick 2.04 at the same time. Two more years went by and I got hold of a used VX-030 with 2 megs of ram.

Then in -98 I got my used A4kD and that one's still working like a charm, besides the fact that the PSU fan is giving up, and runs as a webserver at the moment. Could I get a NIC for the 500 I'd use that as a webserver instead.

My first was an Amiga 500 bought in 1991 with a 1084sd2 monitor and a tv converter for 720€ :_)

It had problems of stability so after some months of problems and going back to the shop the changed it for a new A500...

It worked flawlessly for years... I bought a 512kb ram expansion (I noticed it in the music of titus the fox and because I could load The One's Darkseed demo). I used it for DeluxePaint, DeluxeVideo (yeah, I know it was crap but it was fun anyway) and games (After the War, AMC, Budokan, Prehistorik, Quadrel, ShermanM4, Titus the Fox, etc...)

I moved to another city. My A500 died 5 years later with the disk drive. I sent it to repair and they gave me an A500+ motherboard with the old chips but the Fattest Agnus. I saw lots of mags and started to buy The One, CU Amiga, Amiga World, Amiga Format, Amiga Computing... I didn't know any Amiga user yet (Spanish mags had died and the only ones alive weren't available neither known in my city). I bought AUI and saw that the disks required KS2.0... I kept the disks some months and upgraded to ks2.05 (3.1 was very expensive). WOW! ks2.0 was great! disks loaded faster, I felt a lot of control, I started to use the workbench more and more...

After 6 years with an Amiga 500 I found an Amiga user in the city (oh, it was amazing! an amiga user!). He had an A500 with 1.3... I saw clearly that he wouldn't upgrade (money problems). I think that having been able to use ks2.0 was an important factor that caused me to continue using miggys.

Then I moved to Zaragoza, found AmigaInfo (an spanish mag), subscribed to it and I sent a letter where I asked if there was any local user group/club, and in the second number I bought my letter was published. In the third number Zurt (now one of my best friends) replied my letter... I was lucky because CUAZ have been founded just 2 months before or so. I meet the CUAZ crew and it save my "Amiga" life :-)

It's a pity that we don't meet so often... I miss the old times.

My family bought an Amstrad CPC6128 in 1990 (used by me and my sister, I was 4 years old at that time, so I
have been in computing for most of my life, I remember breaking already making BASIC programs by not knowing what
I was doing when tinkering them... The GFX corruption was fun! ;-)). In Christmas 1992, we bought a second hand A600HD
with a 1084S monitor, 512k expansion and some original and lot's of (sigh) pirated games and programs.
Originals were REALLY rare in Greece at that time...
I still have that A600 but a CIA and the Keyboard MPU are dead.

I bought an A1200 in 96 and a 2GB HD a year later.
in 98 I bought a CD-Rom, the HD died and I had to make some
custom boot floppies to boot from the AmigaFormat CD which
had a 3.1 installation. Luckilly that didn't last long:-)
I got a BlizzPPC040/603@240 and 64MBs of RAM in 99 and got
online later that year with a "nice" 33.6K Modem...
The rest is a custom tower, then a G-Rex and then a PowerTower.
I bought a PegasosI-G3 last summer.
I had no PC till 2002, when my sister upgraded to an Athlon.
I had lot's of experience with PCs but never had one at home. Winblows sucked then and they still suck now... :-)

(Excuse me for the EXTREMELY bad formatting, I really suck
at formating text in such forms and have no time to "fix" it right now...)

Hmm.. Got my first Amiga in 1993 (and no, it wasn't the A1200 (one of my friends got one of those) it was an A600 :)). The nice thing about that was the 40 Gb harddrive.
"Yeah - sure, you can play Elite II with your machine - well, try installing Monkey Island on your non-existant harddrive wiseass!" :)

The first program... Hmm. Must've been one of those term programs (if I remember correctly it was a program named NComm or something).

The first game? Well, the A600 was previously owned by a notorious disk-swapper/trader, so I got about 600 disks full of pirated games :)Think it was Monkey Island 1 that I played first - and I totally fell for it.

The first program I bought was a BBS-program named NtPro - later on I was one of the betatesters for the 040 version (or was it the PPC-version? Can't really remember :))

Awww, I thought I was going to be the earliest but frankb beat me (just).  I got my A1000 Christmas of 1985.  Took a LOT of begging from my older brother and me but my parents finally gave in.  Cost was $2800 (Canadian) for the A1000 with 512k, Amiga 1080 monitor, and a Panasonic 9pin printer.  I remember that because my parents got it for us on the condition that we "pay them back" by cleaning the house every week (for several years).

At the time I was quite young (I was in elementary) and didn't really appreciate what it could do.  Mostly used it for games (I loved playing Defender of the Crown) and for school work.  I would type up all my reports in Textcraft1.0 (GREAT PROGRAM for its time).  It wasn't until grade 6/7 that I discovered the CLI and then I was hooked.

When we got the computer, we were also given about 20 disks with it, labeled something like "PhaseIV-Demo3".  For the longest time I was confused because I'd stick the disk in and it would read %80 full, but there would appear to be nothing on it.  Then I discoved I could boot off most of them... and then... I discovered "Dir" and whole new world opened up to me :)  I remember one disk (remember these were given to us by the store) that APPEARED to be blank was actully full of PORN. (I never did tell my parents).

Eventually my brother lost interest in computers, so I bought my half of the A1000 from him.  Actually, I still have that original A1000 sitting in my office next to my A4000T/060 (along with a couple A500s & A2000s).

After filling up buckets of drool since 88' :-) I finally got an Amiga of my own at X-mas 93', a new A1200.
Got a HD and modem year later.
The modem got killed by lightning a year after that (damn that was 2700 SEK down the drain). My parents were probably happy though, no more expensive phone bills :-)

Mostly used it for games.

Current Amigas
3 x A1200 1x Blizzard IV 030 2x HD
2x A600 1xHD
1x A500 30Mb HD 3Mb RAM ROM 1.2-2.04
1x A3000 2xDD 1xHD 286 card (no software)
2x A4000 one dead one in tower PPC Cybervision 3D
1x CD 32

Hardly used any of them for 2 years :-(  blame the Games on my PC :-/ and laziness

I bought my first Amiga in 1986.  It was an Amiga 1000.  Shortly after buying it I did a hardware hack that that involved soldering memory chips together and then piggybacking them on the onboard 256k memory.  It added 512k of memory for a total of 1meg with the upfront 256 memory expansion.  It caused me a devil of a time for about 3 months until I tracked down ONE badly soldered leg.  After that is was rock solid.  Later I added 1.3 kickstart ROM to it to get rid of the bootdisk.  Then added an accelerator that kicked it up all the way to 14mhz. OOH!

Later I added a Microbotics 2 meg expansion on the expansion port.  I still have it and it's up and running downstairs in the basement.

I don't understand how Commodore could have gone broke with all the money I spent with them!! :)  Here is the complete list of computers I bought:

Commodore Vic 20
with tape drive
Commodore C64
with 2x 1541 floppy drives, Commodore's 6 pin dot matrix printer, Commodore Monitor (forget the model, something like 1702 or something)
Commodore SX64
Commodore C128
with 2x 1571 disk drives, Commodore monitor
Amiga 1000
with 256k memory expansion, 1010 external floppy, 1080 monitor and C1300 genlock
Amiga 2000
with 1084 monitor
CDTV
with external floppy, scsi harddrive, kickstart switcher (1.3 and 2.04), internal genlock and 020 accelerator
Amiga 3000
Amiga 4000 x 2

That's not to mention workbench 2, 3.0 and 3.1 (with roms of course) plus a TON of boards, 8up memory expansion, Megachip 2 meg Agnus, GVP 030 accelerator, 2 GVP TBCPlus, Video Toaster, Picasso II, Picasso IV, GVP Spectrum, Cyberstorm MkII 060, Warp 040, Xsurf, Highway USB and on and on and on.......

NOW how COULD they have gone broke!

The A1000, CDTV, A3000 and both A4000's are still running beside each other in the basement. (All stuffed with all sorts of various boards).  No reason I guess but it's hard to let go :)

Upstairs next to my AMD Windoze machine is an AmigaOne, you'd think somewhere along the line I would learn wouldn't ya?

1989/1990 and the machine was the A500, rev5. Later expanded to KS2.05, 1MB RAM, extra drive, AR3..

Then I swapped the motherboard for an A500+ one, now it's got an ICD AdIDE + novia mounting kit with 1GB 2.5" HD, SupraRAM, AmigaNET A500.. :-)

It's still missing the VXL*30 accelerator, I haven't had time to figure out how to get everything working together stably. I might need a more powerful power supply for it..

Also a couple of beefy A4000s, the other one 060 and the other 040 and an A2000/060.. I guess it's time to sell some of them away - I don't need so many Amigas. :-D

My first amiga, was when i was 14, it was a screen Gems bundle. I had it for X-mas. I can remember having to front half of the cost!

It was expensive then £500. With inflation, would prob cost the same as my NewA1/G4 today

I bought my first amiga in September 1990.
An A2000 with 1mb ram no hd and a 1084mono monitor.
After this one I bought another A2000 with 3MBram and a 1084S monitor.
In 1994 I bought my first A1200 with Blizzard 1230IV 16MB RAM and 1GB HD.

Today I have 5x A2000 with 1084 monitors and 3x A1200 with Blizzard 1230IV/ and Blizzard 1240 16 MB each.

My first Amiga was a 500 I got in '89. My gf got one a year later. Over the years between the two of us have aquired quite a bit of Amiga equipment. 3 A500s, 2 A3000s, 2 A4000s, CD32 and various cards, hard drives, monitors, etc. I'll get a 1200 when a friend sends it to me.

We're going to be moving into a house soon, so I'm going to dig them of their boxes, fix them up and maybe ebay some of them.

That's a great question.

What made me get one. I saw a 1000 in Myer with the ball man juggleing.
There was another demo later that I also saw in Myer a year or so later, I am still looking for everyone!! if you know what it is, and can help me find it!! I'll describe it breifly.
It had music and red balls at the top of the screen I think they moved to the diff channel music then they turned into little winged devils and back again to the red balls. I WANT THIS DEMO. I saw it on a compilation disk for Sonix or Audiomaster.

Anyway I was sheerly amazed. I  used to play on my dad's XT turbo with herculese graphics card, green screen and 10 MB hdd which I thought was so cool. I used to draw on it. Halo Paint was the program, but my mates dad's apple Mack, wow, it was sooo cool even though it was also mono, it had a black & white screen!
When I finaly saw the AMIGA, I was simply floored. When  I heard the AMIGA, I nearly fainted. When I saw the multitasking OS, I died went to heaven then asked GOD to send me back so I could play some more.

I remember it was over a grand, nearly 2 from memory. I thought, there's no way I'm ever going to afford this puta, my friends were getting them, my mates mum bought her son one, I was like woah, you mum spent $1700 on you? But I worked and saved and finaly, I went, with my dad, and bought my first AMIGA 500 with the extra disk drive. Oh how I was in HEAVEN. This PC rocked big time, it was just the best thing I have ever had, I sooo loved it. Normaly when I buy things I think, geez should I have spent so much for just this...
Not with my AMIGA. It took me no time at all to learn the GUI and befor I knew it I was writing basic programs in WB 1.2.
Then My mates mum got him the 500 for nothing and it had 1.3 roms. I was so jealouse. I wanted to swap motherboards, he'd never use the HDD booting ability and I wanted it, not to mention, it had more on board ram chip slots. You could populate that puppy with 1MB ram, the new Fat Agnus chip and not even use the trap door.
Out came the 2000b wooo what a beast! a big desktop. My mate had one with a graphics card cost him nearly 5 grand. I was going to have to wait a little then low and behold the 3000. Now, the 3k did something to me, it got hold of me and shook me. I remember going into the Melb city store, just to play on one. I used arc at the time to do some file archiving, this computer store let you come in with disks and get free PD utils. Man, I went there every weekend!. The 3k was INSANE in the speed department, it was 10x faster than my mates 3k and I saw some amazing demos.

My mate gets a 500+ Lucky {bleep}!! with os 2.1 I'm jealouse it does some hi rez modes! I want a new miggy real bad

Saving like frantic suddenly out of nowhere the AMIGA 1200 is released. OH MY GOD. The graphics!!!! OH. and a 020 and hdd to boot. OK, that's a must have. I almost had enough money from trying to save for the 500+ and so I borrowed money from mum and caught a train to Croyden in Victoria Australia to a place called MVB computers where I ran the whole way from the train station to get there before the shope closed. I was greeted with broad smyles as I had called up 3 or 4 times that week to make sure they would hold the store open for just a little for me to get there after school. The guys there were all teasing me saying they had to sell the last one because they had to finish the order but they would have some more next week. I was so dissapointed I turned to leave and thanked them pleading with them to please hold the next one for me when the other guy came out of the back holding the 1200 box with a big grin on his face I lept for joy and hugged the lady near me lol They were all laughing :))
I held that puppy so tight all the way home on 3 trains. took 2 1/2 hrs for the trip but I HAD ONE!! oh, it was insane. It almost made me fail school that year lol.

I had now just finished High School and was studying Electronics.

Then the 4k came out. OK, I'm not going to bore any of you any more, you all probably think I'm a nut by now, but I saved, and saved and saved and finaly I got one for $4800 and I loved it. It was a {bleep}load of money for me at the time, and it was the first time I thought, geez have I done the right thing, but I look at how long I got the use out of that PC and I judge it that it most certainly was. I'm not sure if I would spend that kind of money again, but the 4k was the stuff dreams are made of and Oh yeah OS 3.1 MAAAADDD wow.

Anyway, never in my life has a peice of machine ever had that kind of an effect on me. And never again since. MVB now sell PC's and most of the people are gone. Big HI to Michael if he still reads AMIGA posts! You're the best man, I have such fond memories of you and that store.

My parents bought me my first computer back in '86, a C64C with a 1571 (the drive was fast but it made running a few games a real a$$ pain). Anyway, the C64 was sold of to fund the purchase of an A600 in '93 which was sadly traded in for a 486DX4/100 based system in '95. Then during my first year of Uni ('98) I got myself a job as a tech at one of Australias biggest Amiga computer shops, Maxwells. To my surprise they still sold Amigas as well as Amiga software and accessories. My first weeks pay went towards buying an A2000HD they had sitting there. I took it home and proudly set it up in my room. It began taking up too much space and was relocated to the bulkhead of my wardrobe where it sat until the middle of last year when I discovered WinUAE. Anyway, while at Maxwells I also aquired an A500 and a 128D, both of which found themselves stuffed in the bulkhead with the 2000.

Anyway, upon discovering WinUAE a lot of fond memories started coming back and it prompted me to dig through the now overcrowded bulkhead of my old room. I pulled out all the Commodore stuff I had collected and relocated it to my new house where I have dedicated an entire room to my computers. I fired up the A500 first (for the first time funnily ennough) and didn't really get much out of it, so it went on to the "to fix" pile. I then fired up the C128D, no problems...woohoo.

Anyway, I then moved to the A2000HD, it fired up no probs but for some reason it would freeze everytime I pressed the joystick button on port two. Funnily enough, thats how I discoved A.org. Some very kind people pointed me in the direction of the CIA's, it was at this stage that I discovered that the battery had began to leak, doh!!! Anyway, to cut a long story short, I cleaned up the battery mess, replaced the CIA's, removed the battery and upgraded the HDD. Now the A2000HD runs super and I intend to upgrade it even further.

Since my rebirth into the Amiga community, I have aquired an A1200, 2 A1000's, a GVP HD8+ for the A500 (stripped that down, cleaned it out and reseated the chips, all ok), an Opalvision video card for the A2000 (can't seem to get that working) and a C64C along with a 1541-II drive. Anyway, sorry for the long and no doubt boring post, but I thought my Amiga story should be told :-D :-D :-D .

My first Amiga was an A500 with a 1084 monitor that I bought used in 1991.  I had always lusted after a A3000 but I couldn't afford that at the time.  The A500 served me well until I was able to buy an A3000 in 1994.  Since then I have updated that 3000, sold the 500, acquired another 3000 and an A600.  I probably need to sell a couple of them as I don't use all of them but they are fun. I have both 3000s apart to replace the batteries so I haven't used them in a few months.  I need to get at least one back together.  :-)  Ah, YAM and IBrowse, where are you when I need you?   :-D

Hello all!

Long time lurker, first time poster, long time Amiga lover!

I bought my first A500 back in 1989.  I remember that my best friend had gotten his A500 not 6 months prior to me.  his model came with KS /WB 1.2 and mine came with 1.3.

I'll never forget the look on his face when he found out.  The jealousy was apparent.

Since then I have aquired an A4000 040/25 Desktop, an A1200 stock in a Power Computing Power Tower, another Amiga 500 (KS 1.2).
My original 1.3 A500 has been updated with an M-Tec (http://www.amiga-hardware.com/mtec020i.html) 68020 Accelerator Card and 4 MB FAST RAM.

I have yet to get one on the Internet. I just have too many projects going on at once.  Between my family, school, job, Macs, Atari's and Amiga's there is no time

My poor wife is going crazy with me and my "Orphanage for Wayward Computers".

Ok. Enough rambling.

Happy computing!

I bought a used Amiga 1000 with 4 mghz Sidecar back in 88 when I was 14. The A500 was already out for a while, but for some reason I loved the A1000 set up much better. At the time there were no discernable difference between the A500 although people kept going on about some sort of halfbrite mode thing. Oh and the chip ram was not expandable and stuck at 512k.

I quickly upgraded the RAM to 2 meg which was decent for the time, and shoved a 20 meg partitioned HD in the Sidecar that could be used in the Amiga(After a lengthy floppy boot disk process. sigh). I also had an accellerator card for the PC that brought it up to a whopping 8mghz. Still CGA of course though. At least I was able to program Pascal for school. Then of course I got an external 3.5 floppy and later even a 5 and 1/4 floppy drive. Hmmmm...So many mods abandoned on those. I wonder if the disks are still readable. I had huge speakers surrounding the A1000 too...The system was soooo kick ass at the time and my PC and ST friends were soooo envious.

I was a hardcore Atari ST fan, when my folks bought me a 520STe in 1990. I defended the machine to the hilt until I realized that I was fighting a losing battle.

When just about everyone I knew had bought an A500+, I suddenly decided to jump ship at the release of the A1200. I've still got it, but with the upgrades it has I daren't boot it without getting hold of another upgraded power supply!
