Title: Swede sues bar for getting her drunk
Post by: odin on April 05, 2004, 12:21:25 PM
A young Swedish woman is taking legal action against the owner of a bar after she drank too much alcohol and ended up in hospital.

The 20-year-old woman downed five tequilas in five minutes after having earlier knocked back pints of beer

and cider and had to be taken to hospital with alcohol poisoning.

She now claims that the drinks contained more alcohol than is legal in Sweden and is suing the owner of the bar in Eskilstuna near Stockholm for damages.

She claims her ordeal has put her off tequila for life.

I'd expect something like this from an American , but it's surprising coming from Sweden.

If she was an American, the bar would be in even more trouble, she's underage  :-)

Hehe.
The legal drinking age here is 18. You're not allowed to buy it in the liqour stores until you're 20, though.

This case is just plain wierd, though. It prooves that the government is right by keeping the prices on alcohol up. :-D

In Sweden we are allowed to get into the bars when we are 18 years old. How is it in the USA?

We're very conservative here when it comes to alcohol.
The government controls allmost all (legal) sales of alcohol, and they keep prices at an insane level just to keep people from buying.
Thank goodness I only have three kilometres across the straits to Denmark!

Just another proof that we are turning into an USA-wannabe.

/insane old redneck mode on/
As for EU and the alcohol import, it just encourages sissy habits like sipping wine the whole week long. And nobody remmebers how to distill your own liquor in the sheed in the backyard. Instead they buy liquor smuggled here by polish truckdrivers., which very well could be methanol. Not to mention that even the criminals has turned soft, because of the increased flow illegal weapons into our countries. Now they are armed with automatic guns and rocket launchers, I remmeber when all they needed was an shotgun. And kids in  school thinking that somebody is a badass because they have a knife, when I went to school badass was someone who keep comimg after you even when you threw stones at him. And the whole swedish powergrid is turning spineless, getting all interconnected so we soon are going to have brownouts like other third world countries. And if there is a power failure, everybody whines about it after just a couple of hours, in my day it wasn´t a real poewr failure if it didn´t last for two days. And the police is totallly spineless, they can´t find even find a place if it doesn´t have a street adress. They are happy to shoot at protestors and giving people traffic fines, but the can´t even solve a bikesnatching. And they have submachineguns, teargas, pepperspray and riotgear, and want a digital radiosystem, but they can´t but an cow which got hit by a car out of it´s misery because they don´t have a huntingrifle permit when I was a kid they usually had a hunting rifle in the car to put down trafficwounded mooses with.
So it´s no wonder our fotball team is crap.

The money should be paid out to her. Not because she deserves it, but because bar keepers can be greedy {bleep}s and keep selling stuff to people who've obviously had too much. Hit them in the pocket. That'll teach 'em.

Hmm, fair point. Unfortunately, the more drunk a customer gets, the more likely they are to cause trouble when you cut them off. Better to drink them under the table, ha ha! :-D

Seriously though, this is just opportunism, which in the end hurts people who have genuine claims.

IIRC, and I'm sure a Brit will correct me if I'm wrong, we have no drinking age in Britain, only a minimum age for buying alcohol to consume. i.e. If I give my 13 year old nephew a beer when he comes to visit me, neither him nor me are breaking the law...

Correct, although I think you have to be 14 or over to be allowed in the bar area of a pub.

My dad took me for a beer when I was 15 and made a big deal out of it because he only once got the chance to drink with his own dad. Whenever we're at a bar now (thankfully not very often) he tries to talk me into drinking, which pisses me off...  :-x

A person under eighteen shall be guilty of an offence if, in a bar in licensed premises, he consumes intoxicating liquor.

Although apparently if you're sixteen you can have a beer with your pub lunch, you just can't buy it.

http://www.hmso.gov.uk/acts/acts2000/20000030.htm

So an under 18 can't drink in a bar (at least not legally ;-))  but drinking off licensed premises appears to be unregulated.

Same here. minors are allowed to drink under the supervision of adults. Letting kids get drunk would probably be a crime though...
