Post by: asian1 on April 03, 2004, 11:59:04 PM
Hi
The astronauts inside the space station are startled by the mysterious sound. Is this sound from metal fatique?

It must be disconcerting to say the least. From a fear of the unknown point of view, you're out in the middle of darkness with nothing for thousands of miles. You just don't know what's out there.

And then there's the practical point of view. If you're unlucky enough to be in a space station that suffers a hull breach, just hope your brain comes out your ears first before you get to see your colon. That can't be a comforting thought.

Just what would happed to a human body, if exposed to vacuum? I remember the wonderful scenes from "Event horizon". Yuck!

But a tomato isn´t a human body its softer. Although it probably would totally screw up your bloodsystem and internal organs. Probably heartproblems and internal bledding to death.
I know that it is teoretical possible to do a fast spacewalk unprotected and survive(probably with severe injuries, I think it´s safe to say that you would get heavy cold or heat damage ):-)
. I also know that lack of oxygen or cold/heat isn´t what you die of, so I assume it must be vacuumdamage. But I know for a fact that people don´t explode.

Selfsealing spacesuits? :-D

I wonder if it's simply a bodily function nobody want's to admit to.

Update on Noise:
TsUP/Moscow continues to look into the cause of the
anomalous noise heard last week in the vicinity of Foale's sleep compartment in the SM (module).

They figure the main suspect is a ventilation fan, and cleaning its screen will be scheduled ASAP.

However, TsUP may also have the general location of the noise inspected from the outside during EVA-10, on 22,7,2004  (just in case it`s a borg device).

At least it seems exposure to vacuum conditions is over pretty quick - total loss of conciousness within 15 seconds or so. You won't have to worry about how big your ass looks after a minutes worth of your bodie's liquid content evaporating / degassing...

-edit-

Incidentally did you read the bit about the technician accidentally depressurised to vacuum? 30 seconds of exposure and after repressurisation he recovered with "no apparent injury sustained"....

...but I bet his ears popped damn hard!

:-? I wonder what the long-term side effects were.  I can't imagine that there weren't any.
