...well not quite. But it used to be only every few months that an A4000 would appear on eBay. SX-1's and RTG cards would appear even less frequenntly, and PPC cards (particularly for the A1200) were ultra-rare highly sought after items that would appear maybe every three to four months and would get a flurry of excited bidding activity within just the first few hours. But now eBay is full of them, and that's just the UK site! Even the Holy Grail of A1200 expansions, the 240MHz PPC603e with 50MHz 68060, isn't particularly rare at the moment (I've seen two on eBay in the last couple of months).
Is this a mass-exodus from the Amiga for those of us that remain, or a sudden effort by everyone to sell their aging Amiga hardware to finance an upgrade to newer modern "Amiga" hardware such as the A1 or Pegasos? Or just coincidence perhaps? Thoughts anyone?
-
Well it's a little late in the game, but hopefully this will get a new generation of users upgrading their old classic boxes. More used high end kit on the market, lower prices and more incentive for the casual user to upgrade.
-
Well I think its good that the hardware is becoming more affordable. I think I agree with Red's point.
[Although I wouldn't refer to my Amigas as 'boxes' - classic, yes, boxes NO!
I might one day be able to afford PPC for my A4000!
-
Its probably a mix of people leaving & upgrading.
-
Well I for one just sent my A3000 out with UPS to Canada today. Why, well to get a Pegasos II after using one for the first time a few weeks ago. I let my A3000 with 200MHZ CSPPC/060 and mediator in a Mirage Tower go for a mere $800 and in return I ordered a new Tower case, 512MBDDR RAM, 120GB hard drive, Radeon 7000 AGP card, a 32X CD-RW drive, and a Peg II G4. Not bad at all!!!
So yes, I think with the number of people selling off the classics systems they are done for. I hated selling mine, but its time to move on I felt.
-
Well...I sold off well over $1k 's worth of stuff to get back to pegasos (Peg II ordered and waiting) :-)
It was all top flight stuff...best expansions money can buy for Amiga so it sold pretty quickly (that and the fact I blew it out at great discounts) :-)

A BPPC 240MHz/040/scsi card has just gone for £400 on Ebay. That's a fair sum for a 'dying' system, eh?
I suspect very many classic Amigans will use the rush for NextGen to upgrade their existing kit at 'reasonable' cost, using the stuff A1/Pegasos wannabees are selling off.
Realistically, nothing about the NextGen hardware is 'affordable' to anyone but out and out Amiga fanatics. I would suggest that they are not the majority of Amigans as a whole.
Cheers,
JaX

Hi JKD,
erm!!! . . are you waiting a Peg2 board? . . .prepare yourself to a loooong, loooong agony :-)

Not yet, I am waiting for it to come. Its in the mail though and I should get it at the end of next week. The Pegasos comes fast Framiga, its not as bad as you think. You should look into getting one. I played with one last week for a few hours and it feel just like an Amiga. It looks like an Amiga. If you stuck an Amiga logo on it and renamed it to AmigaOS instead of MorphOS you would fool everyone! Its that Amiga like.
-
I'm kind of pretty much doing the same. Except I already had a Pegasos 1 (and II, although once my replacement CPU modules shows up, I won't have the 1 for long).
I traded a bunch of stuff for an 040 based A1200D... I figure I can still live with a semi-powerful Amiga for anything that needs chipset. MOS UAE on a G3-600 is good for A500 speeds so I can run classic A500 games just fine. Then the A1200 for other stuff. ;)
-
selling your old stuff is the best way to get money for a new system.selling it before it dies means you make more. :-)
-
Acill,
i've NEVER said that peg2 is bad (i'm against BB anc Co and NOT with the system itself).
I would like to inform you, that you can forget your Peg2 G4 due the fact, that the last production is all sold.
That's all folks.

Well we shall see. They havent had any problems producing them so I dont see why I cant get one. I've been in steady contact with them and they have another batch thats scheduled to be completed mid next week. Now my CSPPC is something I dont think will ever get sent to me!
**Just got an email update, and they made a new batch of boards last weekend. Mine is in it and lots of people will get theres as well in two weeks.

From Acill
Well I for one just sent my A3000 out with UPS to Canada today.
You b*stard! What did the guy who bought your 3000 ever do to you? ;-)
No really, shipping something to Canada by UPS is the equivalent of holding him upside down by his ankles and shaking him till all his money falls out. If items are shipped by Post the brokerage charge is $5 Canadian. UPS will probably charge that guy $80 to $100 even if the shipping was prepaid. They are pirates, bandits, highwaymen of the worst order...
(you can see I probably have an opinion here :-D )

It looks like an Amiga. If you stuck an Amiga logo on it and renamed it to AmigaOS instead of MorphOS you would fool everyone! Its that Amiga like.
Which is _why_ first Bill McEwan and now Garry Hare have infringement issues with Genesi over intellectual property that they owned.
-
Well from what I know of MOS back from the Phase5 days it was to be the replacement for AOS on the new PPC switch over. Then all went to hell and they left. Iam sure it was all coded internal. Just like AROS. So much is known about Amiga that I think a good team could make a compatable system. Look at WinUAE. It runs Amiga software better then most Amiga systems can do now.
-
Long wait? Here in Sweden there are Peg 2 in stock.
@JaX About NextGen hardware being 'affordable' to anyone but out and out Amiga fanatics, dou you know what an A4k, with tower and CSPPC, mediator etc would cost me, even om e-bay? A Peg 2 or A1 even an would be cheaper. Unless you'll settle for a patched up A1200 or another low-end spec.
But yes, as you wrote "I would suggest that they are not the majority of Amigans as a whole". I guess you're right. Amigans today is mostly retro-gamers :( Let's hope there's enough real amigans left so that Eyetech doesn't abandon us due to lack of demand!
-
@Crown About A1200 with mediator, bppc, graphics card and so on is not cheap. It may be cheaper than a A4000 with CSPPC but an A1 would still be cheaper than an A1200 with all the neccesary hardware.
/Jörgen
-
Yeah, I guess so, but maybe you could pick up an A1200 at some local webforum a bit cheaper.
-
Hi crown
here in Italy too but . . . only Peg2 G3.
AFAIK no Peg2 G4 available ATM.
Ciao

i dunno... the whole morph/peg stuff just leaves me kinda cold. to be honest with you i do well regret selling my A4000T (genuine Amiga Technologies).... stuffed with GFX cards, PPC stuff, ultra scsi drives, blah blah blah, for 800 quid... (the digital broadcaster32 and AD516 cost me 1200 UKP on their own). kinda sucked. but hey.
back in the running with an A1200 due for upgrade soon...

Hi darksun9210

Why do you say that? I got mine today after only a ten day wait. Once it got from Germany to the US it was overnighted to me. Very fast service, and great product. I was very impressed with its looks!!!
-
Hi Acill,
well i'm happy for you :-)

Well, here we have G4´s and G3´s lined up and ready to deliver. But no rush to buy them.
