Title: Blizzard 1260 or Viper 1260 that is the question?
Post by: kvasarnomad on March 31, 2004, 12:47:40 PM
I was wondering which card you recommend
if you think that the blizzard is better, where can I buy one I have only seen a 1240 on GGS-Data(swedish)
I was thinking buying the viper because Vesalia has them and I have order from there before.

the blizzard is the better card. Its much better in construction. It can take more memory (256mb in total vs 64 on the viper). It also can have DMA scsi with the addition of the scsi board.

Unfortunatly I dont think you can buy them new anywhere anymore, at least not at any of the well known dealers... perhaps someone in the US has some, or that italian shop but I dunno...

the only real plus I can think of for the viper is that its avalaible new, and you can clock them higher than a blizzard card.

ok that was what i thought. I think I save myself some trouble and just buy the Viper 1260 then.
how much memory do you recommend.
one reason I considered buying a Blizzard was the blizzard SCSI Controller, are there any other desktop(orginal) compatable SCSI Controller that are easy to get your hands at?

@Ryu

Is 64mb memory enough to have on 060 accelerator? With the current range of new 68k software available is 64mb of ram likely to cause problems?

64MB should cover 99.999% of Amiga software easily. I managed with 32MB on my 040 with no problems.

I never came across an 68k programm that actually needs more then 16 MB to run, but having more helps when processing large images/sounds, digitize direct into RAM for speed reasons (in that case the 320 MB on my A3000T don't seem to be enough). Or you just unpack large archives into RAM-Disk and don't have to worry about cleaning up the disk if something during unpacking goes wrong.

The only SCSI-expansion for a desktop A1200 other then via a turbocard would be a squirrel/whippet that goes into the PCMCIA port. But unfortunately this is about als slow and CPU intensive as the internal IDE-port. the only benefit is that you can connect external drives/scanner in a clean way.

Quake port at Aminet needs 24 mb of ram to play with it. I have 128 MB (2x64MB) of ram in my Amiga 1260. I found a place to buy new Blizzard 1260 cards and SCSI Kits. Look here:http://www.amigis.nl/prijslijst.html#turbo. This is a Dutch company.

But they are very expensive: 399 Euro for the Blizzard card and SCSI kit for 119 Euro.

For aboard customers they need to order for 500 Euro.

well if you plan on doing a lot of web browsing or play the latest 68k games youll find 64mb to be a bit restricting. I have 128 in this machine and it suits me fine. I used to have 64 but used to struggle with it.

if i had the choice, i'd go for the blizzard.
better quality build, and if its speed you're after, i seem to remember Amiga format reviewing it and over clocking it to 66Mhz (stable) 75mhz (relativly stable) and 80Mhz (crash) without installing any cooling on there (did get toasty). just remember if you are going to over clock, get some faaaaast ram 60ns or less ;) and cooling cooling cooling! lol

and the only reason i can see that you are gonna need more than 64Mb is trying to run Warp3D/PPC apps ;) heretic2? min mem 64Mb, i had hells own job trying to get it to run happily in 64Mb on a cyberstorm even with 16Mb on on the mainboard. but the more memory the better ;)

The Blizzard is a great card, IMO get one if you can find one.

About RAM...I had 64 megs in mine, and never came close to
using it all during normal operation...you should be able to
run any game/demo/normal app and still have plenty to spare.
