IT workers--unhappy campers? (http://zdnet.com.com/2100-1103-5175988.html)

Stands to reason really.

bah :-(
(wonder if these guys have made a difference between system operators and programmers?)

I've never been happier in a job.

I'm quite burned-out on IT jobs.

A friend and I recently discussed this, he being a programmer (JAVA/C) and me being a Systems Engineer (Wintel/Linux). We decided that there is no passion in the IT industry anymore. It's filled with fake marketing and BS platforms that don't inspire the passion we had in the 80's and 90's for the work that we now do. There is little inovation and engineering and TONS of marketing these days. Return on Investment, Total Cost of Ownership, Zero Administration, E-enabling your business...... It all sounds the same and all reads like Microsoft's website. Hell it even sounds like most of the Sales reps I deal with daily. Anyone seen the movie Office Space? I rest my case. :-D

RUN! Run and don't look back!!

Agreed. I've seen office space, and I own a copy of the Death Bed Vigil. The contrast is night and day. I felt the passion at one point, it's what got me into computer science, but with the death of Amiga, I almost never made it out. With my degree I managed to get a job programming fairly lame apps. Nothing exciting at all. I never went into comp sci to program lame-ass time tracking software using PowerBuilder/SyBase!! ugh! Yeah, by the time I was laid off, I was burned out and was actually happy to be let go. Now I'm burned out of being laid off and could use the money I used to make... It sucks working just for the money though.
What would be your ideal job?!?

I must admit that even with Zeta/BeOS I find it difficult to inspire the passion I felt with the Amiga, but then again I having recently only refitted my BeOS rig after a spell of weeks on Windows2000, even that is enough to sustain me...
The next big thing I think isn't going to be a cray supercomputer in a matchbox, but something simple yet powerful enough to do every day tasks without the usual rigmorole that comes with todays computing experience.
I think that a dedicated *fun* home computer right about now would make an absolute killing.

Just to explain... I've worked for several companies that had a range of problems, from technical to managerial to financial to personal. I am currently working with a company that has none of these problems. The place would be a major Dilbert Zone if nobody had a sense of humor, but when you're sharing laughs with both the IT director and the owner of the company, and get praise for your work from said owner, you never want to work anywhere else.
We sell a tonic made from seaweed :-) I do web development for them, mostly ColdFusion.

It is called Original Limu and is only available from someone who already buys it. We sell it through a multi-level marketing scheme, but unlike many others they don't go door-to-door or force others into it, it is a relaxed environment where people are offered to try it, and if they like it they can get it. The Limu Company's website (http://www.thelimucompany.com/) contains information about it, along with contact information for regional distributers.
BTW, The GIMP 2 kicks ass! :-)

;-) Yes. A few kind words go a long way, and they cost nothing. It's astounding how many managers never realize that.

Personally, I really like my job, I spend most of my time kicking back relaxing, I get 9 weeks holidays each year, I don't realy have to answer to anyone (ie. no one bites me in the ass if I'm late) and I get paid well. So I would have to say I'm a rather happy camper.
However, I must say that the current computer industry as a whole does kinda suck, I mean who needs a 3.4GHz processor to surf the web??? And who wants to spend several hundred dollars on software that has more holes than swiss cheese??? Anyway, I'm getting off topic now, so its time to shut up.
