So, what is your favorite text-editor?
In some time, I´ve tried to find a good text-editor for the amiga, but it seems like a hard task. The reason I´m doing it, is that a want a good text-editor for programming. I´ve been used to use the asm-one integrated editor for assembly-programming, and cygnus-ed, for other text-editing. The problem now is, that the asm-one editor is no use for c-programming, and cygnus-ed, won´t work correctly with CyberGFX. So now what? What good editors are there? I´ve tried GoldED, but I dislike the insertion of spaces instead of tabs.
So please tell me, as I said I like editors like cygnus-ed, but also Ultra-Edit on the PC, and Nedit on Linux. Any Amiga-alternatives out there?

A lot of people swear by GoldEd, which surely must be the most fully featured editor on the Amiga.
Personally, I reckon you can't beat the original (before a different author took over) version of Blacks Editor (the updates became unstable :-( ).
Why? Because:
* Its super fast! It doesn't have a custom GUI and excessive bells and whistles. Its a no-nonsense editor that is perfect for programming.
* Everything is scriptable, and every menu option is an ARexx command that you can change!
* It just gets the job done!
I don't know where you'll find the original now, I think Aminet only has the newer versions that are unstable here. I would make an archive from my installation, but its a bit heavily customised :-(
-
AARGH! Need it, must have Blacks Editor!!!
-
email me et pete@shagged.org and when I get home I'll try and make a sensible archive out of my hacked dir :) I think i got it on the cover of Amiga Shopper originally...
Actually, thinking about it, I have every Aminet CD going back to 22, i'll search there to see if the older version is on there... if its on 1 to 21, well, surely SOMEBODY here must have those CDs?

You can send it to hardboy@amiga.org as it should be forwarding it.

I nearly always use GoldEd 4 - I can't use the non-standard customised interface in v5 onwards, nothing in the interface seems to work how exactly how I expect it to..
The newer GoldEds (unsure which version it's from) have an option to use real tabs, rather than spaces.
-
oops... misread something... ignore this post...

@Tickly
Agreed, I use BED all the time. Once you get into BED, you'll never want to get out of it (groan).
@Hardboy
Have a look thru any coverdisks (AF,CU, etc). If you cannot find anything, mail me direct and I'll mail it to you. I use it a lot with ImageFX for modifying scripts. The Beauty of it is it can be set to run on the IFX screen, which saves me a lot of time.

VI... need I say more.
Okay, TextPad on Windows.
Ed or edit on Amiga.

*shivers* evil nasty horrible piece of rubbish!
Okay, TextPad on Windows.
EditPlus is faster, and generally nicer.
Ed or edit on Amiga.
 good one! (that was a joke, right? ;-) )
-
You'd hope it was a joke :)
I guess Ed is better than nothing, but only just!
My personal favourite is CygnusEd. Didn't know it had a problem with
CyberGFX. I use Picasso96 here, so probably why I've never had an
issue with it.

I use the DevPac 2 editor. It's not very good-looking but it has all the features I want: It's very minimalistic but it still has those things you can't live without, like auto-indent and multiple windows.
A very similar public domain editor is JanoEd which I also use occasionally.
-
PhatEdit on AmigaDE!!!! :-D
-
@Hardboy
cygnus-ed, won´t work correctly with CyberGFX. So now what?
Cygnus-Ed should work fine with CyberGraphX...
Just choose the "Use Public Screen" option, or switch the scrolling mode. (If it's on Use Custom..., switch it to Use System Scrolling...) These settings are on the first part of the "Environment" menu.
That should do it. ;-) Or at least it does for CygnusEd 3.5 Pro
I've always used Cygnus Ed on CGx versions 2, 3, and 4 with no problems, once either of those options are set. (If they're not set, you will get all sorts of strange characters and blurring effects when you scroll...)
EDIT: I take this back... It seems that only the option "Open on Public Screen..." works to properly display on CyberGraphX 4. :-(
So, you CAN use CygnusEd, but it has to open on your workbench rather than it's own screen.

Not entirely off topic:
Which is the best text-editor for Windows?
Are there any programs like Gold-ED?
-
Which is the best text-editor for Windows?
Personally, I like UltraEdit32.
Reminds me of CED in a lot of ways. Newer versions are getting a little overly bloated in some areas, but it's still a great editor, with a lot of really useful features.

For what it is worth I use Digital Quill, I wonder why it never caught on. Invoatronics the company that distributed the older versions of Directory Opus had a text editor that I used for years but I dropped it when I saw Digital Quill at one of the Gateway Amiga shows in St. Louis. For sometime I used vi for HP-Unix but that is practially it's own sect. ;-) Anybody else try Digital Quill, I think Vaporware distributes it...
-
On Windows, my favourite text editor actually is MS Visual InterDev. Mainly because I mostly code HTML and ASP, but it has a lot of other nice features too.
-
Hi Hardboy,
Over the years, I tried out several text editors, but I always came back to CygnusEd. By far, personally speaking, it's the best and fastest text editor on the Amiga, with enough options to keep me satisfied. Although programming is limited to hands-on, so if you don't know your code, don't expect it to help.
Unfortunately, I don't think it's being worked on anymore.

For the Amiga: (in this order)
- Eve
- CygnusEd
- BED
- Ed
- Memacs
- GoldEd (too much like windows programs)
For the windoze thing:
- TextPad for everything but html and Java
- JBuilder for Java
- HomeSite for html
:pint:
-
...and TurboText!
-
On Windows I use the Visual Interdev editor for ASP/HTML, Visual Studio for C++, and TextPad for everything else. One of the reasons I bought TextPad was the nice clean user interface -- a lot of the other editors out there look like they were designed in the Win3.1 era...ick.
On the Amiga it's the StormC editor for C and EditPad for all the rest. Simple but they get the job done.
-
I swar by Textpad on Windows. Love it. Wish they made it for the Amiga.
As for the Amiga, hmmmm.... CygnusEd, the latest version seems to work fine with GFX cards. But it needs work. A lot of work.

vi? Ed?
I'd rather edit stuff directly on the hard drive with a magnetised pin. ;)
There are so many to choose from, TTX, GED, CED (and on that-other-platform gedit or pico)...
-
@seehund
If you like Pico, you should try Nano.
It's basically a Pico clone, but with auto-indent and some other nice features.

I use and like GoldED5. I use it mainly for HTML and GoldED does the
job nicely has no problems on CGX4 and has never crashed, ever.
Editpad does the job for editing s:startup-sequence etc :-P

I'd say VI also. don't know why, guess it was when i was trying to do some serious configuring on linux, had to learn it, damn it! Mine also has loads of colourization modes, Pascal, c/c++, crontab-files, bash-files, html, everything. I like it. Like it alot.
Once you understand that [Esc] makes you type commands, and [Insert] makes you insert text it's not that hard. Otherwise it can be a real bitch!
Crashcourse:
vi file2edit
[INSERT] to insert text. (once more and it replaces)
[ESC] followed by [w] writes the file
[ESC] [q] quits!
-
CygnusEd RULEZ! :-D
-
I'm using GoldED 4 from StormC 3. Actually I bought GoldED 5 a fair while ago but haven't got around to installing it yet :-/

Simple and quick has got the be
Amiga - ED
Windows - Notepad
-
My favourite windoze editors are:
Good old PFE (http://www.lancs.ac.uk/people/cpaap/pfe/) - For it's template and macro functions more than anything.
And Crimson Editor (http://www.crimsoneditor.com) which supports loads of languages and ftp file access.
They are both free!
In linux I mostly use Kate, because it's simple. VI gives me a headache.
And on the Amiga I use notepad, Ed and Amos. I also had a simple word processor which I did alot of text editing in, but I forget what that is called.

UltraEdit32 on windows machines is great. Definitly an editor worth buying.
CygnusED is what I use on my A1200's if I don't use ED. :-D
-
TextPad on Win-DOHS. GoldED on AmigaOS.
-
I regularly use GoldED 6; I think it's a great editor for almost everything. It supports lots of languages and development environments with syntax colouring, syntax checking, etc. It's completely configurable and file-type aware with extensive Arexx support. It's really stable and fast on Amiga with graphic card.
Btw, now it supports real tabs (you can choose if use them or not).
There are only 3 things that you must consider:
1) it has a non standard interface; someone hates it because of it :-) , but I think it works very well all the same
2) author has stopped development (but I don't know if there are other active editor projects around anymore)
3) it's big, so one may prefer a smaller program if he doesn't need all the goods GoldED brings
-
I´ve tried GoldED, but I dislike the insertion of spaces instead of tabs.
GoldED has had regular TABs for many years. You've either unearthed a version form the stone ages (like GoldED 4, late 20th century) or not found your way to the TAB configuration dialog to reconfigure tabs from the default setting, which is inserting spaces, to inserting tabs.
-
All right, I guess I'm the heathen here. I'm pleasantly surprised with EditPad. No, it's not full of bells-and-whistles, but it gets me there. Better than ED.
Okay, I'll go back into my corner now. You can all just ignore me.
-
Memacs is cool, with the advantage that it's kinda like the Unix version...
-
Hi,
My favorites:
on Amiga: Vim
on Windows: Vim
on Linux: Vim
And yes, this is true.
Start flaming :-)
-
For programming (mostly Java) under Windows I use Emacs with JDE (Java Development Environment) installed. So far I haven't found a better editor. Tried UltraEdit for a while but found it to be (IMO) far inferior. Haven't tried the latest verisons though, something I'll do next week I think.
