Title: VMM on A1200
Post by: neofree on January 05, 2003, 04:32:52 PM
Hello,

I have an A1200 with GVP A1230 II Turbo+.  It has 4 meg of fast ram.  I am trying to run Descent, and the documentation says it needs 8 meg fast, or 2 meg fast and VMM...

Well, I found VMM on Aminet, but whenever I click Use the screen goes black and I have to reboot.  I have KS3.0/WB3.0, and 030/40.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Neofree

to use VMM or other virtual memory progs, you need a MMU unit.
What chip is in tour 030 card? 68030 or 68EC030?
68EC030 hasn't a MMU but 68030 has it

What screenmode are you using?
Are you using a graphics card?

About the chip, is there a way to tell from GVP's utility?  I imagine it's whatever GVP's most common 030/40 is for this model.

About the screen, 640x200 256 colors.

Not 640x256?
Can you go onto the PAL mode 640x512 without flicker? Even if it does flicker, try playing with the screenmodes and see if it works, and if anything, lower your colours to 64. Although this will make most things look horrible, the program might only support ECS screens.

looking at amiga-hardware, it sais it's a 68030 chip with the MMU built-in.
It can run VMM

I could be wrong, but I think the GVP 030/40 was the EC model, so it does not have an MMU.

If you have a look at the accelerator, the model is written onthe chip  itself, you will probably see something like MC68EC030 in which case you will not have an MMU.

smartalec: I am in US, so 640x200 is what I get.  If I was using PAL, I could use that mode.  It doesnt matter anyway, because Descent prompts you for the mode to use anyway.  And I've been picking 320x200.

scropp: I bet you're right.  I found a program called memlib on aminet that claims to work without mmu, but it gives "Recoverable Error" so much I have to reboot.

Surely there is something I can use?  I wish I could use normal SIMMs with this GVP board.  Does anyone know where I can get GVP mem cheap?

Yes, but if you look at teh back of the box on the same site it reads...

"A Motorola 68030 running at 50Mhz or a Motorola 68EC030 processor running at 40Mhz"

which implies that only the 50Mhz model has an MMU

Who to believe? The chip itself or a website.
My money is on the chip itself.
It probably does have an mmu if it says it has.

Why not pull one of those system info proggies of Aminet and see what they say? I think even Workbench can tell you what CPU it has. Either in Tools or Utilities (whatever  the friggin difference may be =).

You also can run AmiGod2 to see if you have an MMU

I found 3 other VMM programs that dont need MMU.  I will try these, plus am looking for GVP SIMMs.   I will still check to see if I have MMU, but if memory serves, I do have the EC chip.
