Good news folks. Looks like Commodore will be back! Now will Amigakit want to be a part of it?

Very interesting. An ensemble of previous Commodore execs as advisors (no Hynie by the sounds of it) and a desire to bring the separate bits of the old Commodore back including Amiga. How does that work - Amiga OS is owned by who (never been clear to me with all the courtcases - Hyperion?) And the Amiga brand - A-Eon / Amiga Kit - so many questions.

Following this news very closely….indeed!!

Exciting times ahead indeed! 😉👍🏻
-
I dont understand why a bunch of old people are wanted as advisors. To advise on how things worked in the 80s and 90s? And what are they going to bring to the table as far as product development now, the whole thing just seem like some kind of PR show to me with the super cringy slogans and stuff, but time will tell.
-
Agreed!

Can we have less bigotry please in these forums.
Ageism is the stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination against individuals or groups based on their age. It can manifest as negative attitudes, discriminatory practices, or systemic biases that affect people of all ages, though it is often associated with older adults
Moderators please attend to this.

Our regular Sheldon Cooper “Kolla” that’s who! 🤷🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️

Not sure if you are joking or serious. I'm 52 and wouldn't choose myself as advisor on a tech startup, it has nothing to do with bigotry.

The way you have posted and how I have read it, is that you were serious. It does show a negative approach to those who are now working to bring back a great company. Unfortunately none of us can age backwards like Benjamin Button 😉
IMHO, It’s the best step forward.
What the new CEO is doing, is including those who worked so hard in the past another chance in redeeming a brand, that was brought o bankruptcy by those who hadn’t a clue how to run Commodore back in the day.
If it weren't for those who killed Commodore, then who knows what it could have achieved. Commodore could have been like Apple is today.
-
I was serious, so to rephrase, I dont understand what hiring original staff is going to achieve (I didn't specifically mention old people now), unless of course you want to make retro stuff, but having watched both videos I really dont understand what direction this is meant to go. The vision is that the modern world need a sort of reboot from before social media became invasive and so on, so how are they going to achieve that, that's pretty bold. On the other hand at least is owned buy someone who wants to do something, but from the info being give so far I have noe clue what that is going to be.
-
Id stop talking if i were you - before you dig yourself a bigger hole.
-
Stick to the topic please.

@polyp2000
We are all "old" aren't we? A ridiculous overreaction to a fair comment if you ask me! I think what he was trying to say was more in line with the now deemed politically incorrect advert for Kia-Ora where all the crows want to get in with the gang by pretending to be the kid's dog to get some of that sweet sweet orange drink! To have all these people coming out of the woodwork to basically answer the question, "What would Jack Tramiel have done?" is a bit backward looking TBH! I mean even Atari had to but a modern spin on the Atari VCS when they relaunched it!
Maybe we do need a Thomas Rattigan type character from Pepsi to keep all these misty eyed nostalgia biased people on the straight and narrow? We've got RGL for these sorts of products and I don't really think a 6% C= licensing tax is going to open the flood gates to better products! The problem is going to be defending the IP not getting Bll Herd's input into how we could launch a product like the C128!
THEA1200 is now down for a Q1 2026 release! I couldn't care less if it has C= on it but I would like to see the 'A1200' trademark freely usable on products licensed from Amiga Corp! Is that too much for an "old" man to ask! ;)

Haynie or bust!
-
Mick Tinker and Alan Redhouse for me! They could both do wonders with limited resources!
-
Commodore could have been like Apple is today.
Oh my goodness, please no. That would have been utterly horrendous to have two companies making products with planned obsolescence of less than one year.
-
Agreed! Apple truly are the complete opposite of their "Think Different!" slogan now. It is now "Think what we tell you to think! Tim knows best!"
-

I didn’t mean it like that. 🤣 Just saying Commodore would still be in the mainstream making great products. Hopefully not being an overlord of tech like Apple. But a household name. 👍🏻
-
But they would have had to charge more for their products and Institute an "Commodore Tax" to survive! They needed more R&D apend and marketing like Apple. They also needed to keep their vertical integration by updating CSG/MOS rather than running it into the ground! Not possible in this timeline!

True. But in this day and age it’s all different. You have those who are mustering their own 3rd party cards for commodore machines.
-
How is it a bad thing to have some of the old Commodore people back? New people would not even be able to know what Commodore is or what it was about. It can only be positive to have these people involved, imo. And they seem to want to be involved which is even better. Obviously time will tell what actually come of it. That being said I did order my issue of Compute Gazette magazine. :)

Thinking that the Amiga community is devoid of ablist bigots is a mistake, thats just my experience on this particular forum as a member for decades. Whats worse is that the bigots back each others rancid comments up. Perhaps its just this forum.

Unfortunately the likes of social media and anonymously posting with Keyboard warrior ways doesn’t help. Toxicity is a way for some to express jealousy or look as though they know more than others. God forbid if you make an error 😬🙄🤣
There are people out there who are bored. Like to have their say.
For this venture to happen, someone has stuck their neck out. Giving it a go. Then those who disapprove will get angry about it and have post up on a forum like this one.
For me perifractic is proving the saying, “If you put your mind to it, you can achieve anything”. Besides give these people a chance. If they “F” it up. Then it was their monies and time wasted. To me this looks like something that will bring the Commodore brand back. Besides, do you want the likes of Bill Gates or Tim Cooke to do it?
Popcorn at the ready 👍🏻

You sound jult like 15 year old me arguing with a bouncer because I wasn’t allowed entrance to a nightclub due to some agist laws and regulations… stupid discriminating biggots, agist apartheid!

If that were the case, they would still be here making stuff for Amiga. Oh wait , they are not.

Blame the mindless sheep that buy their overpriced junk.

Depends on what they actually did at Commodore, I spose.

lol, memories come flooding back of me trying to use my brothers Birth Certificate to get into clubs.

So, will Amigakit be getting involved if asked to do so?
A lot of negativity I feel from some.
To me, a great opportunity to see how this goes forward.
-
@thread
This news just in about older people being involved with Commodore.
In general older people have far more money than younger people. And this project has costs.

Due to the massive issues causing the Amigaworld.net site to become unusable, I'll offer 2 alternatives to keep up with history and insights concerning the new Commodore:
597 posts in this thread in a month? Nice traffic
Yep. This is one place where the action is:
Lemon64 (https://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=87455)
and the other is:
AtariAge (https://forums.atariage.com/topic/382268-can-we-save-commodore/#comments)
Skip to the end of these threads if you only want more recent info obviously.
Commodore patreon posts in both threads and answers questions when possible.
Preview of the next video (Part 3) drops on Thursday to the patreons and on Saturday to the general public.

What this has to do with this thread, apart from divert traffic from amiga.org.
You can still post here?????

Fair enough. Only asked. Plus it was on topic 👍🏻😉

And that sounds like targetted harassment.
Am I to understand that the moderators are not only OK with generalised bigotry but also fine with allowing asinine individuals to target other individuals with their bile.
Does Amiga.org / AmigaKit want to be associated with these individuals and should they be allowed to continue with their toxic biases , sullying the reputation of this forum ?
Will the users be banned ?
Or does Amiga.org / AmigaKit support these values ?

In all fairness I try my best. Not easy on your own.
If you look, I do say and do suff about it. I have been away for just over a week. Seems like you are not allowed time off, even from the internet, :).

@polyp2000
Do you want to keep this on topic and stop calling people Stupid and foolish? For someone claiming they have swallowed a dictionary and pretending they have a Higher IQ than anyone else. I’d stop using that shovel…
As they say. “the door is over there, if you don’t like it here”. You know the rest.
@thread
To try and put this thread back on topic:
I created this thread is to establish peoples thoughts on the Commodore branding coming back. As Amigakit have rights to certain Amiga brands, I was establishing if Matthew Leaman would get involved or not. I now have that answer.
Which to me is a shame. I saw no Harassment in asking. It was like asking a politician to give a straight answer.
It just means we still have some sort of fragmentation in place. I suppose it’s like asking Hyperion and Cloanto to get together.
So let’s keep this thread on topic shall we. Just waiting on Retro recipes latest YouTube update.

I think you misread what I posted before. I never said your were off topic. I quoted number 6, not sure how you misread that for you.

That’s fine. But Polyp is making this conversation off topic. No constructive feedback on this thread. Who was he/she referring too?
I wasn’t referring to Number 6.

Not to butt in (but why not?) but the bulk of the conversation seems to be over on lemon - which isn't surprising since this announcement:
https://www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=1056614#p1056614
Which to save traffic I shall quote a portion of:
It's only a short commercial video announcing the new Commodore 64 Ultimate (C64U for short) and the new Commodore website where you can pre-order these. They start shipping in October.
The video commercial, the site and the product look quite professional. The C64U will be available in 3 editions (specs are identical, they only differ in the look of the Breadbox case) and of the first batches they will apparently produce 10,000, 10,000 and 6,400 specimens respectively, so 26,400 in total.
So it appears that they will, unsurprisingly, target C64 fans rather than Amiga (which makes sense since Amiga has little to do with C= and hasn't for some time). Whether or not this is still on-topic for this forum is debateable, but it does seem that an Amiga fan forum would at least be adjacent to what's going on over that side.
And yeah it's a souped up C64 not unlike The Spectrum or The A500 I suppose.

I still associate Commodore with the Amiga. Not just C64 (besides I never owned a C64). So I associate it more so with Amiga. I'm sure there is lots of others like me.
-
Back on topic...I wasn't aware there was quite the pent up demand for C64s as they are the most numerous single model of computer ever manufactured! Since only 5 million Amigas of all flavours were manufactured by comparison, I would hope that the new C= would in some way help Cloanto and/or RGL cut through the red tape to get THEA1200 launched soon! I can't see any other immediate benefit to Amiga side of things unless they want to buy out Hyperion too?! ;D

@BozzerBigD Thanks for bringing this back on Topic.
All I would say is I’m happy to see the Commodore brand back in my lifetime. 🤞🏻 Christian “Perifractic” Simpson gets the backing he needs to take this forward.
-
I would buy a "new" 100% compatible Amiga 1200, since maintaining old ones is a chore, but I never had a C64 so not really into that.

I think it’s more down to what was your first computer at the time. Those who had the Amiga first would argue that the C64 is not what they would want.
My first Commodore machine was the VIC-20. I never got to own a C64, the next machine after the VIC was the Speccy 16k, the. The A500 Amiga.
Only fairly recently I took the plunge bought a C128D, which now I see what the fuss was about.
Would I buy one of the new C64s? More likely not.
As for the debate about, “Well Amiga and Commodore are separate”. You can argue, that without Commodore buying the Amiga brand and distributing etc… Would it have been as popular?
-
Amiga wasn't my first, but it's the first computer that you can sort of use for something other than playing games. And the novelty of playing 80s and early 90s games wear off after 5 minutes for me at least. I have various emulated amiga systems, some are faithful recreations of era specific setups, like whatever was possible at the time I owned one myself, and some are testing what can be achieved with whatever progress have been made since. It's just fun to fiddle around with. But no matter how cool the games were at the time, I just find them to be boring now compared to new games :P
-
Sadly I missed the whole C64. My dad bought us a Spectrum 48k.
Then we moved on to Atari STFM and then to Amiga.
I do own The C64. Just so I can play Short Circuit and a few others. As after hearing SID music and playing some of the games, I'm hooked on SID tunes.
