Does anyone know if it’s possible to get something like the Amiga Game Selector working, and if so, how? I found the AGS 2.6 real hardware disk image (hdf), but it doesn’t work. I think its size was over 10GB. I recently managed to install OS 3.2 using instructions, but I’m not a professional with these things. 😁

What happens if you use 3.2 Rom when trying HDF, as that will boot from large drive without issue.

The problem seems to be that the HDF image has FullDrive/RDB selected. In WinUAE, the gameselector hdf boots normally. Is there a way to remove this feature or create a new HDF and copy everything into it without rdb feature?

Yes, under HDD tab in WinUAE, set size you want for new hdf and then click create. Do not tick box for Full RDB.
Then format it in workbench and copy all data from one HDF to other.

Have you had any success in the meantime? Is Amiga Games Selector now running on your A600 GS? I would be happy to receive a reply from you or a short report on your experience. Thanks.

Isn't AGS multiple HDF files? It won't let you import multiple HDFs. I guess you'd need to use the custom option for importing?

Yep, its just a big hdd with game zips containing WHDLoad stuff.
The problem will be size of drive and kickstart used. Unless it supports large disks, it is not going to work.
Unless you use uaehf.device or folders.

Have you tried it, using AROS roms? as I would imagine its been fixed for larger drives.

Ah ok, so I found that Real Amiga version, which is one giant img file. I copied that into ~/games as AGA and tried launching it on the A600GS.
The result was a prompt for ENV: to be inserted, then pressing cancel resulted in no further progress.
Changing Kick ROM and launching again leaves with just the Kickstart prompt, whether that's using 3.1 or AROS.
It's a start I suppose.

For env: click cancel and type assign ENV: RAM: then press enter
Then type execute s:startup-sequence then press enter
See what happens.

Hmmm. Trying to add it again, I just get the kick start screen.
Not sure how to get it to kick in.

Latest update changes all of that!!
Edit: or maybe it doesn't. After the reboot, it let me boot it. Second attempt it didn't.
After another GS reboot, it lets you load it once, then it afterwards it just does the kickstart screen.
Odd.

So, the trick with this is:
- Download the real Amiga AGA AGS version .img file
- Rename it as a .hdf
- Add it via USB or by mounting the SD card (the file is too large for FAT32, so it'll need to be ext4 or some other supported filesystem)
- I used the A4000 model with 3.1 ROM, plus using the maximum memory options available
- Then when it does boot, get a Save State
- Each time you load it from a Save State, it'll throw up some PFS3 errors, so just Reset from the start menu
- Then it boots up!
As said before, it won't launch every time, so it's either reboot the whole GS system or just reboot virtually from within a Save State AGS session.
Is there a way to add more memory to a config?

Sorry it took me a bit to reply. There were failures one after another, so the A600GS ended up on the shelf for a few months. :D I guess it’s time to dig it out again and get back to tinkering.

Hopefully we'll get some stability fixes rolled out soon.

Ok there is a possible solution to this but it involves using the 200 in 1 CD32 Games pack located on this website:L
https://unofficial-cd32-ports.blogspot.com/
I set up my A600GS using CD32 emulation to boot into this from start up as an iso file.
Yes it is not the same Amiga Game Selector found elsewhere, but it is kind of the original version and it narrows it down to 200 of the most popular games for the Amiga. I would say that its quality over quantity with this option.

Not a bad solution! Do save states work well with that?
-
Looks like we've got a new version. Something to test on the A600GS when there's time!

Yes, it was released on Christmas Eve. If you figure anything out, let me know. Some people have already managed to install it successfully on the 1200NG from a CF card.

I managed to get AGS 3.0 going on my A600GS by doing the following:
1. Download the AGS Classic AGA 3.0 - SCSI/Kickstart fix version (I couldn't get it working with the non-fix version)
2. Unzip the archive, rename the .img file to .hdf and copy to a USB stick
3. Boot the A600GS to the menu
4. Create a Custom Setup as A4000 (I used the KS 3.2.3 ROM), 2MB Chip + 8MB Fast memory
5. Add the AGS .hdf file on the USB to the setup - note that for me this took about 30 minutes to copy ...
6. Save
My Custom Setup stopped working after I'd tweaked the settings and resaved (KS no disk screen on startup). Deleting and reloading the hdf got it working again.

I tried these steps, but mine never boots - stops at the “insert workbench disk” animation. Could that be a problem with my kickstart file? I tried both 3.1 and 3.2 that I copied from my Amiga Forever installation.

I'll go back and reconfirm my setup when I'm able to. For added detail I used the A4000 v3.2.3 Kickstart from Hyperion, and my A600GS is patched to the latest firmware.

I was able to get it to work one time, randomly trying different settings. I used CD32 and 3.1 ROM, and the rest of the settings the same as you. First time, it didn’t work. Then, I deleted, and re-added the hard disk file, and it booted right up to the main AGS menu. I saved a game state at the main menu. Tried a few games, worked perfectly. But then I tried the c64 emulator, and it locked up. I had to force restart it, the after that, every time, it comes to the “ insert workbench disk “ animation screen. The save state also didn’t work, it would just kick back out tot the main a600gs menu. So frustrating that it just happened to work that one time! I’ll try tweaking settings some more and see if anything clicks.

Coming back to my own settings:
- Standard A4000 machine spec, all on Automatic other than noted below
- ROM A4000 KS 3.2.3 (47.115)
- CPU speed set to 25Mhz (I found having this set to "Maximum" negatively impacted game/demo performance, despite being quicker to boot)
- Networking disabled
- JIT disabled
- Zorro 3 memory enabled with 1GB restricted option
- No "storage" options other than the AGS hdf added
Save states do seem to be problematic, I tested myself and saw the same fall back to the A600GS menu.
Also reconfirmed that altering options around the machine spec causes the hdf boot to fail, requiring it to be removed and re-added. I think this issue may have been raised somewhere before in relation to RDB hdf files

Thanks for sharing that. I tried the same options, except with an a4000 3.1 kickstart rom. It is working, even after a couple of shutdowns. I’m not going to mess with any more settings for now!

Glad you've got it working consistently!
I'm continuing to tweak settings and Use Changes has been very helpful for that. I've bumped the CPU up to an 040 and reset Fast Memory back to zero so that Zorro 3 works properly. I may amend my earlier settings post once I've done some further testing.

I finally managed to get AGS to start using the instructions above, but as soon as I try to move around in the AGS menu, it returns back to the A600GS main menu. The same thing happens with the keyboard, a USB gamepad, and an Arcade R 9-pin joystick.
EDIT Actually, on the very first launch it seemed to work. I was able to move around in the menu and tried one game, and it worked normally. I shut AGS down, and a little later when I started it again, this issue began: moving in the menu sends it back to the GS startup screen.
-
That sounds like the behaviour I saw after launching from a Save State. Were you using one to quick launch AGS?
-
I created a save state once I got into the menu and then tried launching it from that.
EDIT It works now as long as I don’t create a save state. Saving the settings also messes things up and after that it reboots to the Kickstart screen. I noticed a bit of slowdown in some of the games I tried briefly.
