Title: Hello Amigans
Post by: Balis on March 24, 2004, 05:32:55 PM
Hello All,

I'm new here and i used to be an amiga user some years ago.
(1997)

I would like to get back on board but i have to tell that i'm quite lost among all those new things (Pegasos, A1, etc.)
 :-?
I use WinUAE for several months now but i would like to use a real amiga. I still own a 1200/030/hd without CD but i didn't use it for years.

What is the easiest way to be up to date now : upgrade my 1200 or buy a brand new system? cost? OS?
Sorry for the flood of questions
 :-D  :-D

PS : forgive my poor language. Its not my native language.
I'm french and live in Paris.

Hi :-D

People are almost joining in droves this week it seems...

Your A1200 can indeed be upgraded and quite far (68060 + PowerPC, PCI expansion bus + gfx card, sound card, network card etc. and a big box to shove it all in), but it is not a cheap option.

If you want something with more muscle, there are fully PowerPC based solutions, namely the A1 (several models) and Pegasos (at least two models I know of). They are fundamentally very similar (I can feel the flamethrowers being aimed in my general direction as I write this) systems. The A1 is the "official" successor, the pegasos is a rival compatible. Both use form factor motherboards and are designed to take normal PCI / AGP cards.

Unfortunately, there is a bit of a divide across the userbase, so I'm not going to compare them any further because I don't want to incite a flamewar ;-)

There is also AROS. Im sure a guy called "bloodline" will be here shortly to explain that option :-)

Anyway, have fun!

Those of us with or without the A1 are still waiting for the AOS4 to go along with it. At present it only runs Linux.

The Pegasos is much furthur along for end-users with its MorphOS which supposedly runs most of the old System friendly apps.

So its a question of wait for OS4 this year(?) or buy Pegasos.
Please correct me if in error.

@Lo

You can wait for OS4 this year.  Could be waiting for it next year as well.  Noone knows really.

Hi Balis and welcome back !
If you like to use the OS and the applications I would suggest to get a new computer.
You can either get a Pegasos 2 or an AmigaOne. The Pegasos 2 is less expensive and ships with the OS, the Amigaone does not yet.

You can also try AROS (http://www.aros.org) on a PC if you have one. However AROS does not have a lot of applications

Check out APS (http://www.aps.fr) for prices and PegasosPPC (http://www.pegasosppc.fr) for technical information on the Pegasos.
Check out Amont Informatique (url ?) for AmigaOne.
Check out AmigaImpact (http://www.amigaimpact.com) for news and forums in French.

Have fun.  :-P

Welcome Balis,

As you can tell there are quite a few options.

If I can weigh in, they all have their merits and drawbacks.

The classic amiga is going to be expensive to update and is a bit of a kludge with all the add-ons and bits...but it is a real Commodore/Amiga Tech solution and some enjoy it for the retro feel.

The PC solutions like AROS and WinUAE are not 'PowerPC' compatible...and that is the official direction.

There are two PowerPC motherboard solutions, the Pegasos compatible...which is a bit risky, whether it will run OS 4 or not,..however it does have its own amiga compatible OS, MorphOS, which is available to purchasers of the board, and then there is the AmigaONE, which is the official new 'amiga'

but the last has its own issues, its very expensive and only runs Linux right now...OS 4 is not released.

I'm glad to have you here, but I suggest keep running WinUAE and wait.

Someday OS 4 wil be released and there is some talk of a lower cost AmigaOne mobo...  if that happens, then the choice may be clear.

However...many have waited for years for that to happen, and have gotten frustrated and bought a pegasos.  If you don't like waiting...a pegasos may be good for you too.

@JurassicCamper-
Of course some people rolled their eyes when it was suggested the AmigaOS4 wouldn't ship in 2003....  And some were even rolling their eyes when it was suggested it wouldn't ship in 2002.........   The delays HAVE been rather extensive, to say the least.  I wouldn't say it's etched in stone that it'll ship in 2004, though it DOES appear possible.

Anyhow, to bring it back on topic...  Welcome, Balis!  Enjoy your stay!

Thanx guys for all the answers!

I'm looking forward to buy a new system, but before i have to improve a little my knowledges and catch back  :-)

A friend of mine caught the virus too when i showed him UAE last week....and now he uses nothing else  :-D
He's coder and he wanna buy an Aone/OS4 and code under os4.

What does he need since os4 not available??

If he writes apps compatible with 3.x he'll be able to port them easily.

Good on you, Balis! and your friend too.

I cannot afford any new setup for a long time, so in any way I'll for one be waiting for amigaOS 4 (with its Workbench 4) and hope that the amigaOne board will be cheaper then.

BTW. what did you do on the Amiga before? any scene-stuff?

@ jahbaloo:

No i was a casual user, never wrote apps or coded anything.
I regret a bit now.
I was fond of demos and my friend used to code some in the mid nineties, but as i can remember, he never released anything for competitions  :-( ....just for fun.

Now if i buy a new system, i would do something more useful with it :-D
