Title: Ah, the perfect stupid-o-clock snack...
Post by: Karlos on March 24, 2004, 03:34:12 AM
...is a double fried egg sandwich, some ketchup, HP brown sauce and a little bit of mustard for kick, all served on thick slice no-good-for-you white bread...

I can almost feel the lumps of lard struggling their way through the valves joining my aorta.#

Must finish post before...urgh....

So, what's your favourite late night snack?

PS I honeslty don't eat this kinda stuff often, I was just in the mood ;-)

I'll take one of those, but without the Ketchup or HP brown sauce.  Add some cheese, a slice of ham on wheat with the mustard of course.  Made me so hungry I have the wife slaving in the kitchen as we speak.  Yummmm.   8-)

Hey, how am I supposed to surf and cook?  Besides, the last time I cooked I burnt her pans.  So, I'm not allowed.  Besides, I'm pampered . .  :-D

Mine is Popcorn! Not that crappy greasy microwave zhit; not that air-popped flavourless ordure that tastes like foam packing chips. Real popped in a tablespoon of sunflower oil and salted with real theatre popcorn salt popcorn.  mmmmm, popcorn  Butter not required. A whole grain cereal with all the roughage you require and tastes a lot better than bran flakes.
Of course you have to accompany that with caffiene based colas to stimulate your kidneys to excrete all the salt.
I also recommend a stove top popper with a rotating handle to stir the kernels while popping. Usually no more than 5-10 unpopped kernels out of a half cup (125 ml) of popcorn :-D
Oh yes, beer works as well or better than colas. :pint:

True, I don't really eat fast food (not so much for health reasons, its just uneconomical!) but KFC or (Unlucky Fried Kitten as me and my mates used to call it) is the best of a bad bunch.

In my home town (the scummy place that it is) the fast food chains and kebab shops are the venues for the ne'erdowells to  beat the living {bleep} out of each other on a Friday night.

Call me a social snob, but I think if I opened a shop called 'Genetically-Modified Chicken' in my High St, people would still flock there to buy crap food and fight each other after pub kicking-out time.

Back to the late night snack -
Spaghetti Carbonara is quick, easy and tasty - one of my Italian students taught me how to cook it last year, I was surprised how easy it is. Otherwise, an egg sandwich between two nice slices of bread with a little butter and loads of pepper is a good snack. You know when the yolk explodes when you bite into it and it runs into the bread, hmmmmm .

Tripple, Fried Egg, Chillie, Chutney sandwich, with 4 rashers of honey cured bacon and a slice of processed cheese... Wash it down with half a glass of rum'n'Ginger Beer and an expresso chaser.

Those of you who would find this insufficent, can add a couple of thick slices of German Pepper Salami...

As a starter I recommend Mackerel Fillets (in brine).

Have you tried those dipping Pringles yet?  They're strangley addictive, especially when accompanied by the curry dip.

The perfect late evening snack doesn't have to be elaborate.

My fave Friday night post-beer meal is a grilled chicken kebab served with chilli sauce, salad and no onions...  Mmmmmm!

Well its the only decent take-away open in my area after 12am, its either that or McDonald$, and I ain't one for Macca's, would be great if there was a 24hour Burger King nearby, but the closest is in the city. Kebabs are quite nice, but one too many upset tummy's have forced me to give up on that option.

Yeah, pancakes rock...come to think of it, the only thing I really like on McDonalds menu is the hotcakes (fancy name for pancakes???), in my clubbing days that was the ideal snack on the way home, plus that was the only decent thing on the maccas breakfast menu.

Hmmm, all the KFCs around here close at 10/11 PM :-(
No kebab shops to speak of around here either, but there's plenty of donair shops, yum!

Another good snack is Ramen noodle soup.  19 cents a pack and ready in 5 minutes.  Throw a couple of inches of a green onion chopped and half a cup of shredded mozzarella.
Ummmmm, comfort food.

Anyway, you folks in the Nederlands have yet to apologize for that deep fried gravy ball I got out of a vending machine in Amsterdam.  What the hell were you thinking.

At least the Ricetaffels more than compensated.  Ummm, Nasi Goreng :-D

Gosh, I almost forgot another great snack.

Green Onion Cakes with Chinese Rice Vinegar and/or Vietnamese Huy Fong Chili Garlic Sauce.

Just made from flour, water, more salt than could possibly be good for you, a little oil, and chopped greens onions.

You have to make these by hand, as I found out when I burned out my mixer. Actually a lot of the taste seeems to be helped by the preparation (makes it flaky when fried).
Personally, I recommend Canola or Sunflower oil, although Peanut might be okay. Just never tried Peanut though.

Shawarma with chips and garlic mayo. Unhealthy as hell, but the shop around the corner is open more or less 24/7. :)

What were you thinking, eating from a vending machine without the proper amount alcohol needed to sterilize it?

I've found a great takeaway place around the corner from me that does a stellar masala fish on a flat bread. Chilli and mint sauces are optional.

..Hungry now..

My mother once made me a marmite sammich, in which she spread the glorious spread like it was philidelphia light cheese.

Marmite an 8th of an inch thick is not pleasant.
