It´s a fish tank half-filled with water, with two motherboards on plastic spacers on the bottom... In one end of the tank is a pump, or some such, probably to cool the water...

But I dont know how the motherboards refrain from short-circuiting into a pile of smoldering crap... Has the owner coated them with some kind of liquid plastic, or something?

The host doesn't allow hotlinking, so you need to copy the URL  (http://www.b0g.org/wsnm/uploads/water_cooling.jpg) into the address bar for it to work.

Dead images with no ALT tags don't show in FireFox.

You don't have permission to access /wsnm/uploads/water_cooling.jpg on this server.

What makes you think it's water?

Well, I guess it could be beer, but that would be kind of a waste... :)

It's oil. Hence the fish & chips remark ;-)

even though my athlon is overclocked to 2.4ghz on air only...I've heard of extreme overclockers using an inert (non conductive) liquid submersion.  It's a type of mineral oil that doesn't conduct electricity.   A brand called flourinert is on the market.

It's very expensive.  It has to be both very pure...but also flourinert also doesn't freeze at extreme temperatures...

ermm...I suppose a good conspiracy theory is they are jacking the price to 'get ya' too.

anyway....I have no clue if the above is real, but people really do submerge their computers sometimes...I think its a tad ridiculous...I would always rather buy an amiga, than submerge my winblows machine in oil...<--see there, I do have some amiga spirit left.

I belive that this is transformator/switchgear oil.
Some of the specs that this kind of oil has to meet is a watercontent below 30ppm (that`s partspermillion) a pourpoint below -60°C and a breakdownvoltage of 30kV or 70kV for the dried grade. And yes is is quite expensive in produktion, at least in industrial quality.

But can you fry fish and chips in the stuff?

Soggy PC.  Only problem is the cost of the water.  Everytime you turn on the PC it evaporates . . .

The liquid is probably something called Fluorinert(TM) by 3M. (http://cms.3m.com/cms/US/en/2-178/iilzkFV/view.jhtml)

You can also have a look at this (http://www.overklokking.no/prosjekter/3m_utstilling/index.html) tutorial, sadly in norwegian only. Nice pictures though.

I dunno. If you can survive fish dredged out of the north sea in the first place, frying it in some synthetic oil heated by an overclocked PC isn't going to hurt you
