Title: AmiBench Problems and some thoughts
Post by: SkulleateR on September 15, 2024, 05:52:17 PM
Ok, I already shared some of my experience over at EAB but I thought I put it here since this is the "official" A600GS forum ... please be aware that I am not trying to make things look bad, I really like the A600GS and I really want to use it, but at this point it is not really possible :(

Ok, some thoughts before I get into the list, the A600GS is a neat device and AmiBench is a real good step in bringing the Workbench feeling to a "kind of" modern Desktop environment. The problem is : you cannot really use it the way it is meant to be and that would be a Workbench replacement.

- there is no way to use my normal keyboard layout, doesn´t matter what I choose in the GS menu, it will always be UK
- you got JPG/PNG Datatypes, but you cannot display those formats, you only get a black image in MultiView
- OctaMedPlayer won't load any module (wrong format) but I will say I won´t know if that one needs a special OctaMed format
- HippoPlayer crashes (" There is a Problem with the Player group" ) ???
- Eagleplayer loads the module but plays way too fast and when it is finished I get a Recoverable Alert crashing AmiBench
- no chance of playing back mp3 with e.g. AmigaAmp ... this stutters as hell
- choosing the timezone or getting the time from the net crashes AmiBench so the time is always wrong
- no chance getting a browser to work, always moaning about MUI mcc files, I even copied them over from my A1200 and set the assigns, still nothing
- SysInfo crashes AmiBench
- how can I use DF1: ? it´s in the list but I cannot put an ADF into it ...

On the positive side is ADF and WHDLoad adding to the menu is really nice, but that´s something the A500 Mini can do as good as the A600GS ...

Wow, it sounds like you're off to a rough start. I'm curious, are there any dates available for you? Does updating your A600GS work properly?

Does updating your A600GS work properly?

AFAIK the last Update was 46.1.815 (06.09.2024) and that´s what I'm using ... so updates work fine, yeah ...

@SkulleateR

Our developer has been working on the MultiView problem this last week.  I am pleased to confirm he has solved the issue.  PNG and JPEG images are displaying in MultiView now without any problems!

Our new Picture Datatype Class v46.15 will be available in the next update this coming week.

Just wanted to add that I just cross tested the included mods (like SpaceDebris) from the A600GS on my other Amiga setups ...

Quote
- HippoPlayer crashes (" There is a Problem with the Player group" ) ???
- Eagleplayer loads the module but plays way too fast and when it is finished I get a Recoverable Alert crashing AmiBench

... and they play fine there :)

I need to add something about the time settings prefs : most of the time I´m getting weird characters in the display (see attachment)

Latest update sorted this one out :

But maybe can you also set MultiView as default app :) ?

Only a little thing but the “Startup” menu item (under Drawers) does nothing.  The ENVARC:Sys and Prefs ones open their respective drawers.

This has been fixed over the last few days.  Our developer added fixes to the Time Gadget Class.  The new version 46.33 will be added to the next public update to SystemV46.  The problem will be resolved then.

Ok, here is a new list ...

- how can I use DF1: ? it´s in the list but I cannot put an ADF into it ...

Seems that everything left on my list has to do with the sound ... except the Sysinfo thingie but that´s not a big deal :)

Still the wrong path there :)

Amibench text rendering should be much faster after today’s update.  68k code to generate antialiasing of fonts is now native ARM code  through the ARM Graphics Library.

Looking at Skulleater's list, he/she's crossed off "how can I use DF1:"
Does that mean we can access DF1: now? If so, how?

Also, the timezone listed in Locale Preferences for Adelaide and Darwin are wrong (I live in this area of Australia)... it's listed as "9 hours from UTC" but's it's actually 9.5 hours from UTC, so my clock in AmiBench is 30 minutes behind what our time actually is.

No, it disappeared on AmiBench list so since I guess they disabled it in Amiberry menu ...

Just wanted to know if those annoying sound bugs get addressed somewhere in the future ?? As soon as I start using AHI for something like mp3 playback or stream a radio station it´s still stuttering like hell for example in DAPlayer or AmigaAmp  :(

@SkulleateR

We are starting work on a MHI driver for AmigaAmp.  This will give ARM native playback of MP3s etc

Ok, but that will keep other applications that uses AHI out of the game, right :( ?

I will look into the AHI driver at somepoint too, short term work around is to use the Paula AHI driver.

... and also set the audio to 22050Hz  ;)

Sounds good, looking forward to it :)

Working through your list.  The new PlayMP3 hopefully will be a good start to resolving the issues you experienced with MP3 playback.

Thanks

Thanks for all your efforts, most of the things on my list are already sorted and this new ARM library is a start .... would be better to have a working AHI for all those 68k apps but yes, it´s a start  ;D
