MOSCOW - Russia's navy chief said Tuesday that one of the nation's most powerful ships, the nuclear-powered Peter the Great missile cruiser, was in such dire condition that it could "explode" at any moment

Anyway, all of Russia's Military equipment is "End of life" stock.

They should buy some new kit... From the Americans

Yeah right...

The Russian navy is indeed in a dire state thanks to lack of funds, but I wouldn't be surprised if this was an attempt by the Admiralty to secure more funds for maintenence by sensationalizing the story.

More funding isn't a bad thing when you remember the horrible tragedies of the loss of the Kursk and the cold war sub that sank last year en route to the scrapyard.

How many nuke subs were there rotting away again at the bottom of the sea?

I don't want to know what'll happen to the marine ecosystems when the reactors have corroded away...:nervous:.

Hum,
I think the russian captain was being misquoted...
He was referring to the dreadful conditions of the kitchens on-board the nuclear powered cruser...And the fact that BEANS were always served...

(too right)

I did read somewhere that there are 92 (or thereabouts) nuclear warheads lying on the bottom of the sea around the world.

It's a sobering thought when you consider the damage that just one of those weapons could do...

With my layman-knowledge I wouldn't think those nukes are able to explode because of erosion/corrosion. It's more the radioactive contamition of the reactor cores I'm worried about.

Informed opinion has it that the Peter the Great was sent back into dock to get its missiles fixed. At least two missiles went wrong and one had to be destroyed after launch during Putin's recent Inspection of the Fleet shindig.

Informed opinion views this as a political move, by the captain, to improve living conditions aboard the ship (and the navy in general).
The threat or danger from nuclear accidents  has been used many times before to force the leaders into granting extra funding. The  public of course are aware of the dangers, due to Chernobyl accident (and many other accidents) etc, and any warning of potential disaster is noticed...
