Title: Amiga ROMS - Burning Eproms
Post by: Tumbleweed on December 21, 2023, 12:32:49 PM
Hi all,

Im looking to update my kickstart 3.2 ROMS in my A3000T, A3000D and A4000D. What do I need?

Googling looks like I need the following:

1. Amiga KickStarts - I have licenced copies of OS3.2. Roms are on the CD.
2. Eproms - I need two sets for each machine so six in all . Looks like I can use AM27c400s.
3. Eprom burner - was looking at this:https://www.amazon.co.uk/PRG-113-universal-programmer-Adapter-Support/dp/B011HVON3A/ref=sr_1_12?adgrpid=1173179805176865&hvadid=73323937176355&hvbmt=bp&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=69155&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=p&hvtargid=kwd-73323875070259%3Aloc-188&hydadcr=19049_1835814&keywords=eprom+programmer+tl866&qid=1703160733&sr=8-12 (https://www.amazon.co.uk/PRG-113-universal-programmer-Adapter-Support/dp/B011HVON3A/ref=sr_1_12?adgrpid=1173179805176865&hvadid=73323937176355&hvbmt=bp&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=69155&hvnetw=o&hvqmt=p&hvtargid=kwd-73323875070259%3Aloc-188&hydadcr=19049_1835814&keywords=eprom+programmer+tl866&qid=1703160733&sr=8-12)
4. Anything  else?

Is there a better way to do it? I was looking at these from GGLabs https://www.tindie.com/products/GGLABS/f2r16-hn6240227c400-rom-emulator-amiga-kick/ (https://www.tindie.com/products/GGLABS/f2r16-hn6240227c400-rom-emulator-amiga-kick/)

But looks more complicated as more adapters are needed to burn the roms. Would it be abetter solution?

Worth having a look at this first

That Amazon kit looks nice. But pricey. Have a look on Aliexpress 👍🏻

Talking about Amiga ROMs:

Is it possible to burn a 1MB EPROM set for Amiga1200? One of the things I hate about the new versions of AmigaOS is that they have their workbench.library on disk instead of in ROM. I would like to try to "cook" an EPROM 3.2 with workbench.library in it. Has anyone tried it? I think the A1200 accepts 1MB ROMs, doesn't it?

If it is, there's even room for more things……

The short answer is yes. You need to use a compatible piece software to do it. I’ve done it with 3.1.4 ROMs using ROMULUS and REMUS with the 27c400 EPROMS. Videos on YouTube show you how to do this.

I used Remus to make a custom 3.2.1 Rom but it doesn't work with the latest 3.2.2.1 (kick 47.111) Rom. So I soft kick it using BlizKick. Is there a newer version of Remus that can be used with the 3.2.2.1 Rom?

I used that new windows rom builder (can never remember name) to pull apart 3.2.x roms, then used modules from update disks just to be sure. Then build in remus, works great.

The windows one is called “Capitoline”

Stumbled across it last night after some googling. A very powerful tool and much of it beyond my knowledge TBH. Did use it to extract the modules from the 47.111 KickStart from the HotFix update. I have a Deneb USB card - loaded them into the Deneb's flash rom. Works fine and I can now boot with the 47.111 KickStart without the need for BlizKick.

What I did get was a "RED" screen on boot - ROM issue after soft reset before the amiga booted on my first try.

I have a Willem 5.0C EPROM burner with both the DIP42 and ADP-54 adapters.  It took me awhile but I finally figured out how to burn 27C400 successfully.    I burned several 27C400s and then my Willem 5.0C wouldn't burn them successfully.  There is very little to no documentation on the web about the DIP42 and ADP-54 adapters.  I tried everything and then started from scratch.  I put the burner in "TEST" and check all my voltages.  A14 was always 0v.  I found that my 12 position DIP switch, switch 5 was bad.  I replaced the DIP switches and all is good now.  Both of those adapters you just put them in the Willem, put the EPROM at the bottom of the  socket, and you are ready to read, burn and verify.  When reading from a file, sometimes you have to do a "bit switch" or have it repeat at a certain address.

So the ROMs are on the 3.2CD?  I have been holding off on upgrading to 3.2 because it is like $35 for the ROMs.  If I can burn my own, cool!

Has anyone used 27C4000G EPROMS in an Amiga?  If you compare datasheets between the 27C400 and the 27C4000 they look to be the same and both with 12.5v programming voltage.  I have burn them successfully but not tried them in an Amiga yet.  *** NOTE:  I just watched the 3.2 ROM burning and it sounds like the guy doing it is already using the 27C4000 chip.

I ordered OS3.2.2 CD  from AOTL.  I should have it here Monday.  I will use my burner and let you know my results.

I have used the Hitachi 27C4000G for years 120ns speed or faster works fine. its pin compatible to 27c400.

I got my 3.2.2 CD today.  I successfully burned 4000T and 4000 ROM with my Willem 5.0C with the adp-054 adapter on both 27C400 and 27C4000Gs.  I just have to test them now.

3.2, there are two updates, which need to be downloaded.
As I said before, I pulled roms apart to create a custom one, with all the 3.2.2. modules including workbench and icon libraries.

So to clarify, there are updated ROMs that need to be downloaded?  Then you cracked open all the ROMs and built one Universal ROM?

So I get to erase all the EPROMS I just did and start over with the updated ones  >:( >:( >:(
Every time I pull the CPU module out of my A4Ks and A4kTs, I hold my breath.   Wish they would have located the ROMs in a more open convenient place.

You need to register your CD at Hyperions website and then you get access to the OS3.2.1 and OS3.2.2 updates.

Yep, did that and downloaded the updates.  So ROM Axxx-47.111.bin is that ones I burn?  That is the most up-to-date?

Sounds right. Remember though, Workbench and icon libraries are missing. So if you boot floppy or HDD, they need to have both libraries. Else you will end up with a blank workbench screen.

Yes, that’s the latest version from Hyperion. As F0llett has stated, the newer ROMs no longer contain the workbench.library and icon.library. You can Burn something called an Extended 1MB ROM where you can fit this on. Or just add those 2 libraries in your LIBS: folder on your AmigaOS installation if NOT already there.

Is it better to keep the original icon.library or can it be used the PeterK one? 🤔

Me personally use the PeterK icon.library. It’s a lot faster than what Hyperion give you 👍🏻

I find it a step in the wrong direction to leave workbench.library outside the ROM, in LIBS:. Many Amiga users, me for one, do have different media and configs to load from (CF, ZIP, JAZ, PCMCIA FlashRAM, µSD… even bootable CD!), be it current one (WB v3.1.4/v3.2.x) or not, but if you try to load a WB3.9/3.5/3.1 on an Amiga with ROM version ≥ 3.1.4, it simply won't load, complaining about a missing workbench.library, not in ROM, not in LIBS:.

I can understand the space problems, a ROM with ever growing libraries, to the point of not having enough room to fit them all in, but I guess other solutions can be found (compressed libraries?) instead of leaving mandatory libs out.

Ferrán.

As explained above. You can create 1MB ROMs where you can then fit in the 2 libraries. Plus if you are using a TF card with EIDE.device, this can be fitted on too.

Plus it lets you all the fancy OS4 png icons. :)
