A1200 - 4MB RAM. My Conner 40MB drive from the past isn't booting. It initiates spinning but halts after about 10 attempts, eventually ceasing altogether. I'm considering replacing it with a 20GB or 40GB IDE drive. Any recommendations would be appreciated.

AmigaOS has a 4GB limit.
And 4MB RAM will be very tight with large harddrives. Is this 4MB Fast RAM, giving 6MB RAM in total, or 2MB Chip + 2MB Fast, giving 4MB total?
With only 2 MB Fast RAM you should not go beyond the built-in limits. Every additionally loaded driver will eat a little RAM and drive buffers will eat the rest.

Depending on your experience you could get something like this https://amigakit.amiga.store/a1200-hard-drive-p-12645.html, or get a separate adapter and CF card yourself.
The risk of the second option is you will need to set up the drive for Amiga yourself, and run the risk of CF card compatibility issues.
The 4GB limit applies to older versions of the OS. If you upgrade to 3.2 or higher then the drive size limit is much higher (my largest partition is 16GB, currently holding 6.5GB data).

I take it you want to stay with an old style Hard Drive? If not then recommend IDE to SD instead.
