Title: Lauching ADF files in OS 3.2
Post by: bradhansen1 on October 13, 2023, 06:46:04 PM
Hi All, Can someone please explain how to set the OS startup-sequence so all you have to do
is double click on an ADF file to launch it? I always have to open the shell and give the command
to open each file separately.
Much appreciated,
Brad Hansen

If DefIcons is activated the it should work from the Workbench.

Has this continued to be a problem or did you fix it last time and it's happened again (or is it a different issue altogether)? The reason I'm linking the two is because of launching ADF files and your link to the startup sequence.

Hello, Yes this is different, I solved my DefIcons issue. This is trying to launch .adf files from Workbecnch. Not sure
What DefIcons has to do with launching .adf files? An explanation would help.
Thanks,

Deficons provides for each type of (recognized) file type, lets say LHA, AmigaGuide or ADF a custom default icon that has the required tool to view/process those file types when doubleclicked.
So any file that you see without its own icon will be presented to you with the matching default icon.

Do you mean that you now successfully have .adf files associated so that when you double click one it opens a window and you can see the contents? But now you want to be able to double click an adf and it runs the programme instead of opening a window, a bit like autorun in Windows9x?

If so, I'm not sure if it's possible but happy to be proved wrong. The OS will need telling which of the many files on the adf image to run and there isn't a standard.

No, you did not really solve the DefIcons issue.

According to this thread: https://forum.amiga.org/index.php?topic=76099.msg857125#msg857125
you had two copies of DefIcons and you removed the wrong one. The one in WBStartup is the new official 3.2 one which you should keep and the one in User-Startup is the old hack which you should remove.

In addition to that, by installing the old hacky DefIcons you probably also installed the old deficons.prefs which does not contain the correct definition for ADF files. And on top of that if you also replaced the ADF icon, it probably does not call the right program.

It's all the same problem.

So unfortunatly i gave you some false advice, but the question remains how does your 3.2.1 installation ended up with two instances or versions of Deficons installed?

Shouldn't the new install detect the older version and at least advise to remove it, @Thomas ?

IIRC he installed NewIcons on top of 3.2.
