Title: Amiga A4000D - Cable managment
Post by: sheepz on August 09, 2023, 11:49:16 AM
Hi

Now I have my A4000D up and running, I want to improve the cable management as with my A3660 and Zz9000 I am worried about air flow.

As the moment I have alot of ribbon cables stuffed between the cd-rom cage and the daughter board, not helped by having my CF card at the expansion port and wanting to keep my CD-Rom drive.

I have ordered some "round" IDE cables of ebay and a Amiga 4000 IDE Expansion from Amiga68K to help, any other recommendations??

Regards

Barry

Unfortunately, those round cables won't work with Amigas as they are the newer 80 wire cables and Amigas require the older cables.
I know, I tried to use them and no dice.

Sorry

Fortunately, the ones I bought (in Red) do work on my A4000D, and I swapped out the case fan in the PSU for a high flow Noctua. It helps cool my CPU and other expansions, plus I no longer use HDD, swapping to a SSD that gets less warm

Half of those 80 wires are just ground, the remaining 40 wires are same old, so they should work just fine on Amiga too.

Quite certain I used blue 80 wire cables in one of my A4000s back in the day.

Unless you have a video toaster/flyer stuffed in it you likely have nothing to worry about as it is. just make sure the psu fan is clean and working proper.  There are some short cd/dvd drives, look at some sony/samsung models, sorry i don't have part numbers off the top of my head

Yep I agree it sounds like they should work
And yes the added wires are simply ground

And yet THEY DO NOT WORK.
I have actually tried it (Not just talking about it) and have tried several different round 80 wire cables (That yes work in a PC) and no they do not work on the Amiga.

NO IDEA WHY

When the OP gets his cables in, please reply back with whether they work or not.
(And if by some chance they do work for you please provide a link so we can buy them!)

And now I am just seeing this..
You say that you did get a round cable to work with the 4000?

Do you have a brand name or better yet a link that we can purchase these?

Hi

I just bought the cheapest cables on ebay, sadly one is a floppy disc cable (blue), but that was my fault

As per attached, the black one worked, and its branded "NEWlink" but it does have on of the pins blocked off so although it worked form IDE 4 way splinter to CF card, it would not work on my CD rom drive.

It was 20 years ago, I used left over cables from Compaq computers at work.
Disks and cables have since long been replaced by brackets and SD or CF card adapters.

Hi.
Just like you i use round cables as much as i can in my A4000 (for IDE and floppy drive to my bridgeboard) but i am stuck with the ribbon cable for the Amiga floppy drive.
That is still a nest unfortunately, because a SATA to IDE adapter for my SSD add to the bulk and several cables are crossing themselves on top of the accelerator (CS MK2 68060 with fan here).
My zorro/isa slots are all full, so i can't have a blower fan like you there.
Hence, the A4000 has only the CPU fan and the PSU fan which is also a Noctua blowing to the outside.
I can tell with ZZTop that my ZZ9000 chip is running about 72 to 75 °C (i have seen about half in A4000 of other guys), but everything is stable nonetheless, including during hot summer, and in general i prefer silence over airflow.
