Title: A500 troubleshooting
Post by: fifrelin31 on March 18, 2004, 09:29:10 PM

My amiga 500 boots up apparently OK.
I see a screen with a hand and a floppy tellin gme to insert workbench 1.3 .
I've tried workbench 1.3.2 and 1.3.3 floppies but nothing happens (no 1.3 available).

I've opened the old miggy, the floppy is rotating quite slowly and silently, for a very long time. The floppy is a standard chinon FD 354.

I've tried to switch the twio CIAs, but nothing better.

The power led is green and the disk led is yellow, no blinking.  :-?

Does someone has any idea to fix the problem.

Hi! When you put your ear to the drive when the computer is idle(and no disk inserted) do you hear "click click click click etc"?.

When you put a floppy in the drive, does it appear to try to boot?

Most likely, bad floppy drive connection, or bad floppy drive.

I'd probably swap drives to see if this helps.  (Could be that the drive isn't getting sufficient power, though.)

@Ilwrath

I've tried to connect the floopy connector in the 2 ways, nothing better.

swap drives :-? ? I only have one in my a500

I've tested power supply, gnd, +5 and +12 are OK. I've also tried to use an PC ATX PSU to power up the floppy.

with no floppy, no noise nor click click.

When I insert a floppy, the drive starts to rotate gently, but no noisy access .

Might be a faulty (stucked-in) switch. Those stuck with dust and aging. It is located on the left side of the floppy slot. Try to clean it with a "contact cleaning spray", and use some kind of nippers to rise it.
