My A1200 mouse (think it's the original, but it might be an Alfa Data Mega Mouse from about the same time) is starting to fail due to a broken wire (up/down stops working if the cable is in a specific position at the computer end). One option is for me to try and replace the cable (I can solder) but if this goes wrong, what is the best option?
I can see the Cocolino adapter (I have a spare PS/2 mouse) but will this work outside of Workbench (I see it needs a driver disk)? Alternatively I quite like the replacement mouse port from Centuriontech.eu which allows a USB mouse to go straight in (I have a revision 2B board).
It looks like new 'real' mice are in short supply at the moment and all the new options require an adapter.
Thanks in advance for the advice.

I *think* anything that plugs into the mouse port will work. The drivers are just for the extra buttons and wheels on non-Amiga mice.

I can't remember how many times I had to shorten my Logitech mouse cable, always from the mouse end - finally it was quite a stub...

Anything is not quiet true, never plug a serial pc mouse in there. You will damage your Amiga.

Yes, you're right. More specifically, what I meant was that anything designed to plug into the Amiga mouseport (e.g., real Amiga mouse, USB or PS/2 adapter, etc.) should work at a base hardware level as a 2-button mouse without drivers.

I've got cocolino's on pretty much all my machines. they work fine in early startup, outside workbench, inside workbench, games, etc. etc.
all the "driver" disk is for is the mousewheel and third mouse button if i recall correctly. as i've not bothered with the "drivers" since i found some setups had issues and would freeze when they were loaded at WBstartup. but as usual, your mileage may vary, and all software/hardware setups are different in some way.
but otherwise, i've found they're a fine piece of kit. once you go optical, you'll be wondering how you stuck it out with a ball mouse for so long ;)

Thank you all. I'm going to try re-soldering first and then a Cocolino if I make a mess of it.
