Title: A1200 Questions
Post by: videofx on April 06, 2020, 04:35:50 PM
Just got an Amiga 1200. I bought  the ACA1233n-55 accelerator. DO I need a Fast ATA controller or is fast enable that is part of the accelerator enough.

I may make it a tower and add the mediator with ATI Radeon and Spider USB.

any thoughts on black box tower and mediator?

I know nothing about the A1200

Thanks!

Bill

IMHO gfx card doesn't make much sense with only a 030 CPU, but for workbench only it might be fun.

The internal IDE in the A1200 is junk, so if you want fast transfer speeds, well you will need a FastATA of some sort.

Make sure your targeted tower solution has an Amiga-friendly PSU.

Thanks Tribble. the tower is the Elbox Blackbox 1200. Looking through the instructions seems be be easy to put together with the mediator.

What FastATA solution would you recommend?

Thanks!

Some of the newer ACAs can get an upgrade to enhance IDE speed a little bit, but i have no informations about reliability.
The FastATA named solutions tend to have troubles with longer cables, so i would recommend an ideFixExpress - if you can source one.

Internal IDE is just fine, you will not need a fastATA, of course if you want one go for it. :)

I have always thought that 68040 is minum CPU for me and that I would suggest you to get one. If you want a tower it, you should start with speedy accelerator. 25mhz 68040 is about a 2x faster than 50mhz 68030. 68060 CPU is about 8x faster than 50mhz 68030 CPU.

Though this is a hobby so you do what you feel right.

Thanks for that info. I got the 68030-55 brand new for 299 euros so I thought it was a good buy, I didn't want to shell out 600-700 euros just yet, I have an 060 in my 4000T so If I need speed Ill try and run it on my 4000T
