Hi all,
I am trying to decide between two options:
- recap my old Amiga PSU's
- buy a modern heavy PSU which can power up to three Amiga systems
What are your thoughts on this?
-
My vote would be to mod a new PSU as it will last longer, be quieter and if it does die will be easier to replace.
Just my 2 cents..

You mean use a single PSU to power three Amigas? Medusa springs to mind. ;D

Check out:

It should give you a better idea if you want to rebuild your power supplies especially if your Amiga's are expanded.

Hi all,
I have found a PSU on the internet especially designed for Amiga systems. This specific PSU can power up to three Amiga computers.
It will cost me 122 euro without shipping. A recap of my original PSU's will cost me less.

Which would be the better choice?
Recap my old Amiga PSU's or buy an aftermarket PSU which can power up to three Amiga's?
Recapping would be much cheaper, but would involve some soldering.
I am planning on to recap my A500+ and replace the case for a new A500 from A1200.net which I hopefully will receive very soon this year!
After that my "new" A500+ deserves a stable PSU.

Medusa? Where can I find some info about Medusa? Tried Google search but no results :-(

I can't imagine that. Maybe you found the info relating to a Greek gorgon named Medusa and didn't believe it was what he referenced.
Believe it ...
Best regards,
Niels

It just came to my head when you said about it powering three Amigas at once...so yes, no PSU called Medusa.
If you have a beefy desktop Amiga (consuming much more power than usual on 5V line) the 4.5A heavy 'A500 PSU' will power it. If you have one of those, it's worth recapping for sure. I always try to use original hardware where possible, but that's a preference of mine.
Fitting a new PSU into an old weak (not the 4.5A) Amiga PSU case is also a good option in my opinion as things at least do look original still and presumably these modern PSU's are more powerful right?
For years I ran my heavily expanded A1200 from a standard 3A Amiga PSU (060/clockport sound card/FastATA with 2.5" HDD). The PSU failed eventually, but it was perhaps due anyway as it had never been recapped and after all was from 1992. I suppose I was stressing it and it was a silly thing to do, but I still have that PSU and I will fix it when I get round to it!

I replaced my "heavy" 2.5A PSU with a Meanwell RT-65B and it's working like a charm. It fits in the original PSU case as well after some filing and such.

I did the same. RT-65b is a nice PSU....
