Title: making own ROM's
Post by: pyrre on October 21, 2018, 06:09:30 PM
Hello.
I put this topic here since it regards making roms...

I have searched for the topic the last few days. but i cant find any real related topic. (perhaps i suck at searching....)
anyways...

I recently purchased os 3.1.4 and try to install it to my A500+ but it gives me quite a challenge. The derringer has a hardware option to store rom in fastram.
Using the - D3 drom - option makes the hardware copy rom data to ram. but i find no option to spesify rom from a file. making it (so far) impossible to put 3.1.4 rom in use on my A500+ setup. I need an actual rom replacement.

If i am correct this (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/XGECU-100-Original-Minipro-TL866ii-Plus-TL866A-TL866CS-12-Adapters-EEPROM-Universal-Bios-USB-programmer-Free/32893002325.html?spm=2114.search0104.3.23.44fe71e943L07x&ws_ab_test=searchweb0_0,searchweb201602_5_10065_10068_318_319_317_10696_450_10084_10083_10618_452_535_534_533_10307_532_204_10059_10884_323_10887_100031_320_321_322_10103_5727713_5727813_448_449,searchweb201603_1,ppcSwitch_0&algo_expid=56828914-35f2-4346-83cf-f6cc999cb8d2-3&algo_pvid=56828914-35f2-4346-83cf-f6cc999cb8d2) should be able to program a 40 pin rom chip.

But i struggle finding the actual rom chips...

But it is 42 pin....

Can anyone here put me in the right direction please?
(to a proper programmer and proper chips)

Clearly this is a case for the Hyperion support staff.

Clearly this is a case for the Hyperion support staff.
Clearly not. The distribution as it exists now uses LoadModule to load updated Os components. I do not see where anyone promised that the average "map ROM to RAM" feature multiple turbo boards provide is capable to load a new custom ROM, including its manufacturer.

These simple ROM remappers are board-specific, and are typically only able to map the currently active ROM to RAM. Anything else requires heavy hackery for which only the manufacturer could provide a solution.

Yea... no problem on the A1200 with blizzkick.....
Should work just fine. have not had time to come around and tinker with the 1200 yet.

the A500 is set up and in use quite often. and i would like to upgrade it properly :D

Next we are told that noone ever promises actual ROM chips with 3.1.4 kickstart and that we all should just use LoadModule?

You can buy the chips and have it programmed from http://www.buyicnow.com/

Programming service costs $0.5 for each chip http://www.buyicnow.com/ser.php?i=1

Suitable eproms http://www.buyicnow.com/it.php?i=98

AM27C400 UV EPROM, from what I recall, is what you need.  I just bought 10 of them on eBay 2 weeks ago.

Here's the one I bought a few years ago for my car tuning:

Here is a question:

If someone started mass producing these ROM chips, charging nothing more than raw materials cost (+ a few bucks for their time), but just so that people who want them could have them, what is the likelihood Hyperion would squash them?  ::)

the programmer you linked to can only write to chips with 32 pins... A500 rom chips are 40 pins

but why not contact them and ask... maybe offer them a fee or aquire a lisence from them to do just that......

What's holding up Hyperion releasing the ROMs themselves?

Lack of infrastructure. You need to order ROMs from a reliable(!) source, need to burn them and ship them.

Any ETA on when the ROMs and floppy sets will be available for purchase?

I believe this one is 40 pin:

You can use a TL866-II programmer for them with an adapter for those eproms sold by GGLabs.com.  The TL866 doesn't support them natively, so the adapter is needed.  I use a SuperPro 610p, which doesn't require an adapter,  but, that's a $500 programmer.

You can also buy one of those FLASHrom adapters from GGLabs on ebay.   He will program them for you with whatever Kickstart you send him to put on it.
