Title: Best 68K Web Browser
Post by: trekiej on March 17, 2018, 11:07:53 PM
What are the most up to date browsers I can get for Amiga 68K?

IBrowse 2.4, if you enjoy surfing the web ala 2002.

NetSurf if you have an '060 or Vampire, or similarly fast system.

I hear IBrowse 2.5 is coming out at some point (don't hold your breath).

Yo Mike.... are you using NetSurf for OS3.X? Is there a stable version now for 3.X? Has NetSurf been recompiled for SSL4?

I really hope IBrowse 2.5 get released soon! :)

iBrowse 2.5 doesn't update it to support CSS etc. So visual result will be same than current versions.

Here :

http://ci.netsurf-browser.org/builds/amigaos3/

Netsurf 3.6 used to be quite fast and semi useable even with 68040 cpus. When it moved to 3.7 speed dropped to 50% what it used to be. I think that problem is also with framebuffer version of it.

Try yourself

Current version you should turn ON "Cache native versions" from prefs it helps for speed. Default is OFF

Chris would need to help to get SSL v4 to work with it.

Don't you need gobs of RAM to use netsurf?  I recall trying it with 13 MB and received an error message to that effect.

My version nearly worked with 18MB last time I tried, and is fine with 32MB IIRC.

Actually it's OpenSSL 1.1 I need to get working, not AmiSSL.  http://bugs.netsurf-browser.org/mantis/view.php?id=2583

Chris' Netusrf uses about 12mb ram to start. So with 32 mb ram it has some use, more is better of course. :)

Artis Frambuffer/SDL fork uses about 22mb ram to start and it is not speedy enough with (real) 68040/68060 cpus. Of course somebody could disagree, but that is same than Youtube "works" with Netsurf 68k. First stream is converted to mpg1 in a cloud and then played with mplayer 68k. Works nicely with UAE.

Clarification.
1) On UAE you stream MP4.
2) Mpg1 video with new Riva-0.53 can be played fast on real 060, maybe even 040 (I haven't tried. Video quality can be set in Prefs). Super fast on Vampire.
3) Third option is to stream 3gp video using ffplay. This option is possible on Vampire:

I have an 030 Accelerator running at 50mhz with 64mb ram, an additional 128mb from my 9250 which is used as fast ram and was wondering if I would be able to run Netsurf at a decent speed?

Sorry, you can't. Chris version wich is about 2x faster than other, renders amiga.org 20 sec with 68060 and 40 sec with 68040 40mz.

68030 50mhz has little bit less than half of power of 68040 25mhz.

So 68030 50mhz would render amiga.org about 2 minits.

Also it requires render and guicfx libraries, wich requires FPU. Though you can found no fpu versions of them from aminet.net but that would be it even slower.

Of cours you can try your self, it would cost you only some time.

This video is a little over a year old.  NetSurf portion is closer to the end.  Enjoy!
