(yes, this is duplicated from the news item, but a lot of people don't actually read the news pages)
In preparation of a new section of the Web site, we're now combing through old SQL backups, old file backups and about anything else we can find about the last few years. Our intention is to open a historical column where we'd post all these old critical announcements in one place for the purposes of researching the history of our community and what we've gone through.
We need your help.
We know that you're all packrats. We know that you have this old stuff squirreled away on your hard drive for a rainy day.
I'm not really talking about "History of the Amiga" type stuff which has been covered in abundance on other sites, but anything you might have sitting dormant on your hard drive which documents the announcements by everyone from Commodore to the Gateway era, all the way through Amiga Inc.
Things like the "Gateway has purchased Amiga" announcement, or the "OS4 will happen in 2001" announcements.
We would appreciate ANY help that you can offer in recreating that which was destroyed by hackers in the old versions of Amiga.org's history.
-
What a great idea, Wayne. :-)
-
oops.. I deleted a load of stuff about Gateway and Amiga Inc. a month ago in an effort to gain some space. :-(
-
Well done, bloodline!
-
Any chance you have a backup? I have backups from very late 2001, but the periods between 99 and 2001 are a complete blank thanks to the people who so thoughtfully destroyed Amiga.org's earlier PHPNuke and Postnuke incarnations..
-
Who destroyed amiga.org, Wayne? :-?
-
script kiddies who thought it would be funny. We lost a LOT of historical information. Don't go off topic though.
-
Are you telling that you made no backups in the early years of amiga.org? :-x
-
Sorry Wayne. I was just curious.
-
again, off topic, but to answer it.
Much like the forums here, youth lends to naivety. In the early days of the site, the idea that anyone would have wanted to destroy all of our hard work seemed silly. Around Christmas time 2001, the Amiga.org PHP Nuke site was hacked, destroyed, and any data we had was corrupted beyond dependability. About 8 months later, our Postnuke installation was destroyed by a different group for no purpose other than their own satisfaction.
We lived we learned. Back to the topic at hand.
-
I'll tell you what.. we'll continue this discussion in the coffee house if that's OK with you.
How amiga.org was destroyed (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=7340)

Please feel free to continue the discussion of the historical documents here. We very much need everyone's help, but please take the "how AO was destroyed" to the Coffee House.

History of A.org ?
O.k. lets just hope someone has a backup of the old coupon-avartar-bet. Probraly the most breathtaking piece of history from the last 5 years :-P :-P
-
History of A.org ?
no.
Historical announcements by Amiga companies to include the Gateway era, the foreclosure and auction, and the current Amiga Inc period.
There has been a LOT of "when did x say that?!?!" lately. I think we should have a place where all these items are posted on a permanent basis. The trouble is, I have one SQL backup from 2001, then only from 2003 and later, so I can't piece it all together myself.

This is the first post on ann.lu! (http://www.ann.lu/detail.cgi?category=news&file=019990301a.msg) :-) It's from 28 Feb 1999, and Jason Compton say:
"VIScorp's not out of business, in case anybody's interested. They now exist as US Digital Communications."
Ann has been here a long time, and should be a good resource for the "collector". :-)
Edit

@Wayne
Well that is gonna be a section of a.org destined to drag everybody's mood down ...
95% of all these announcements never became reality, and the other were extremely delayed ..... :-(

Fleecy says: "I must admit though, AmigaSoft sounds like a Jeffism. Not only do we open ourselves up to all the crap jokes that have been aimed at Microsoft, but MS is a better acronym then AS. Let's hope they leave the marketing to McEwen, who understands these things."

Wow, this was fun! By browsing the deepest vaults of ann.lu, one suddenly starts to remember things again. :-)
Well, it's the history that took us here ...
-
@Kronos,
I have nothing to do with the fact that history can be depressing. The problem I have is that there are newcomers who don't have the benefit of having lived through "our" history. (The fact that there are those who don't even know AO's history is astounding to me) These same people are both very gullible and they're more easily able to troll for whatever cause they've chosen based on a lack of historical information.
